Check your league’s scoring and roster rules, compare the quarterbacks you can actually start, then weigh rank, matchup, recent role and production, rushing value, and player availability. For a close call, read the reasoning in a current start/sit analysis and verify news again before the player’s game locks.
Start with your league’s rules and the decision in front of you
First identify the slot you are filling: a single quarterback position, a second-QB slot, or a superflex slot. Check your roster and bench alternatives, and note when each player’s game locks; roster formats and lock rules depend on your league and platform.
Then check how your league turns statistics into points. Passing yards, passing touchdowns, interceptions, rushing production, bonuses, and available lineup slots can all affect which quarterback is most valuable to your team. ESPN says League Manager leagues can customize scoring categories and point values, so a ranking built for another format may not map exactly to your league’s scoring. Use a current ranking as a baseline
Find a weekly ranking or tier published for the week you are setting your lineup. Rankings are estimates of relative value, not permanent labels: NFL writer Nick Shook has described them as fluid, with starters moving in and out as lineups change. A tier can be more useful than a precise rank when two quarterbacks are close.

Keep the week and publication date attached to any ranking you consult. For example, the NFL Week 4, 2026 QB Index, published September 30, placed Brock Purdy first, Patrick Mahomes second, and Dak Prescott third. Those were that week’s placements—not advice for another week.
Compare the quarterbacks you could actually start
Do not compare every quarterback on a list. Put your starter and realistic bench or waiver alternatives side by side, and assess each on the same factors:

Look beyond the opponent label
A favorable or difficult matchup is one input, not a complete start/sit decision. Read the analyst’s explanation for evidence about recent fantasy production, passing volume, quarterback efficiency, defensive performance, and the availability of receivers or other supporting players. Ask whether those details apply to your scoring and the alternatives on your roster.

Rushing deserves its own check. A quarterback can contribute fantasy points on the ground as well as through passing, and the value depends on how your league scores rushing. Current NFL rankings report passing and rushing statistics, while NFL fantasy analysis has cited rushing output as relevant to a quarterback’s floor and ceiling. Check your settings rather than assuming every ranking weights it the same way.

Use start/sit analysis for the borderline call
Rankings order a broad group; start/sit advice is often aimed at the difficult fringe decisions. Use a current start/sit column when your options are close, but treat its recommendation as a reasoned input rather than a rule. Check its assumptions against your league settings, roster alternatives, and the latest availability news.
The distinction matters in practice. In its September 30, 2026 Week 4 analysis, NFL’s Start ’Em, Sit ’Em column named Tyler Shough its Start of the Week, while the same week’s QB Index ranked him 17th. The first piece addressed a fantasy lineup decision; the second ranked quarterbacks more broadly. Neither placement should be carried over to a later week.

Keep season projections separate from weekly decisions
Season projections can provide background, but they are not weekly guarantees. ESPN analyst Mike Clay’s 2026 NFL Projection Guide, updated September 9, describes its totals as 17-game projections and warns that injuries affect them; some totals also reflect rounding. Use that season-level context alongside—not instead of—a current weekly ranking and confirmed player status.
For any numeric statistic or recommendation, preserve its week, date, and scoring context. As one dated example, NFL’s September 30, 2026 Week 4 fantasy column said Shough had scored at least 22 fantasy points in each of his first three games that season and described him as QB3 overall at that point. The same column reported a 133.1 passer rating and 0.63 EPA per dropback for Purdy through the first three weeks of 2026. These are figures reported in that specific article and period, not universal projections or current-week facts.

Set the lineup, then check it again before lock
- Confirm the slot and alternatives. Identify which position you are filling, which quarterbacks are actually available, and when their games lock.
- Check scoring and roster rules. Verify how your league values passing, rushing, turnovers, bonuses, and lineup positions.
- Open a current weekly ranking. Use the latest relevant rank or tier as your baseline, not a list from an earlier week.
- Compare the candidates. Review matchup, recent role and production, rushing contribution, health, starting status, and pass-catcher availability.
- Resolve close calls with analysis. Read a current start/sit explanation and test whether its reasoning fits your own scoring and roster.
- Recheck news before lock. Confirm the player’s status and make any needed change before that player’s game locks. Fantasy platforms provide tools to view player performance and set lineups; ESPN outlines its fantasy basics in its ESPN Fantasy Football guide.
