On Windows 11, open Settings → System → Display, identify and select the monitor you want, expand Multiple displays, then turn on Make this my main display. That changes Windows’ main screen, but a game can still use its own saved monitor setting—check the game’s display menu if it opens on the wrong screen.
Set the main display in Windows 11
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose Display settings, or open Settings → System → Display.
- Select Identify. A number appears on each screen; match it to the physical monitor you want to use for gaming.
- In the display diagram, select that monitor. If needed, drag the rectangles to match your screens’ physical arrangement. This controls cursor and window movement, not which screen is primary.
- Expand Multiple displays and select Make this my main display.
- If Windows asks, select Keep changes.
Windows’ primary display is generally where the main taskbar and some system UI appear, and many applications use it as their default screen. “Monitor 1” is only a display identifier: it is not necessarily the primary monitor, and numbering can change after reconnecting a cable, dock, or other hardware. Set up the monitor for gaming
After selecting the intended screen in Display settings, confirm the display settings there and in the game. Selecting the primary monitor does not automatically improve frame rate or guarantee that the game will use its best settings.

If the game has a monitor selector, select the target monitor first, then choose a resolution it supports.
- Refresh rate: Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, choose the correct display, then select a refresh rate. Available rates depend on the monitor, graphics hardware, cable, adapter, and connection. If a high-refresh screen offers only 60 Hz, check the selected display and whether the cable, dock, adapter, or port supports the desired resolution and rate. Microsoft explains the refresh-rate setting.
- HDR and VRR: If your monitor and system support HDR or variable refresh rate/adaptive sync, verify that the relevant feature is enabled for the gaming screen—not a secondary display. Check the game’s own settings as well.
- Display mode: Choose fullscreen, borderless windowed, or windowed based on the game and how you use the other screen. Their behavior can differ; see the troubleshooting steps below.
Mixed-resolution or mixed-refresh-rate setups may cause a game to start at the secondary screen’s resolution or use the wrong refresh rate. Borderless mode may also interact differently with other displays than exclusive fullscreen. Recheck the game’s selected monitor, resolution, and refresh rate after changing screens.

If a game still opens on the wrong monitor
Work through these options in order. A game’s own monitor choice, if available, is usually the clearest fix.
- Check the game’s display menu. Open Settings → Display, Graphics, or Video and look for Monitor, Display, or Output display. Select the desired screen, apply the change, and restart the game if requested. The game’s monitor numbers or names may not match Windows’ numbering.
- Move it while windowed. Change the game to Windowed mode—often with Alt + Enter, if the game supports that shortcut. Move the window to the target screen, select a supported resolution, then try borderless or fullscreen again. Exit the game normally so it can save its display settings.
- Try the Windows move shortcut. With the game window focused, press Windows key + Shift + Left Arrow or Windows key + Shift + Right Arrow to move it to an adjacent display. This works for many windows, but may not affect a game running in true exclusive fullscreen.
- Temporarily use one display. Press Windows key + P, choose PC screen only, and configure or launch the game. When finished, press Windows key + P again and choose Extend to restore both screens. This is a workaround, not a permanent game setting.
- Check game-specific documentation only if needed. Some games save a monitor choice in a configuration file or support a title-specific launch option. Options such as
-monitor,-adapter, or-windowedare not universal; do not assume a Steam launch option works for every game. Steam’s display troubleshooting guidance and video troubleshooting steps include switching a problematic game to windowed mode.
Fullscreen or borderless? Exclusive fullscreen often follows the operating system’s primary monitor, but behavior varies by game. It can provide direct control over resolution and refresh rate. Borderless windowed mode behaves more like a maximized window on a selected display and can make switching between screens easier; exact behavior depends on the game, Windows, and graphics settings. Windowed mode is the most useful recovery state when you need to move a game before switching back. Windows 11 also has optimizations for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless modes; these are separate from choosing a primary monitor. If Windows does not detect the monitor or the main-display option is missing
The option may be unavailable because only one display is detected, the selected screen is already the main display, or the other display is disabled or not connected in an extended setup. Try these checks:

- Make sure both screens are powered on and reseat their HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or dock connections.
- Go to Settings → System → Display → Multiple displays and select Detect.
- Press Windows key + P and select Extend if you want separate desktops. Duplicate mode mirrors screens; PC screen only and Second screen only use one screen at a time.
- Restart the graphics driver with Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B. The screen may briefly flicker or go blank.
- Restart the PC with both displays connected. If one is connected through a dock, adapter, KVM switch, or hub, test a direct connection to the PC or graphics card where possible.
- If the display still fails to appear, update Windows and the graphics driver. Software settings cannot compensate for an unsupported port, adapter, or connection.
NVIDIA Control Panel alternative
If the PC uses an NVIDIA GPU and Windows’ display layout appears inconsistent, you can also check NVIDIA’s configuration:
- Right-click the desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Under Display, select Set up multiple displays.
- Arrange the screens if needed, then right-click the intended display and select Make Primary. Apply the change.
Windows Settings is the normal starting point; NVIDIA Control Panel is an alternative or troubleshooting layer, not a requirement. NVIDIA advises that both monitors be connected to the NVIDIA graphics card for its multiple-display setup. See NVIDIA’s multiple-monitor instructions.
Laptop users: monitor and graphics processor are different settings
A laptop may combine an integrated GPU with a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU, and its internal panel and external video ports may be wired differently. A USB-C dock, DisplayPort MST hub, adapter, or KVM can also affect which displays are detected and what refresh rates are available.

Choosing a primary monitor sets Windows’ main display; choosing a game’s preferred GPU controls which processor it uses to render. They are separate settings. In Windows 11, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, select or add the game, choose Options, then select High performance if you want the game to prefer the high-performance GPU. This does not select the output monitor. Microsoft describes the per-app graphics setting in its graphics and windowed-game guidance.
Windows 10 (legacy)
On Windows 10, open Settings → System → Display, select the target screen, then enable Make this my main display. The same basic distinction applies: a game can keep its own monitor preference. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so these steps are for legacy systems; Microsoft’s resolution and layout documentation covers Windows display settings.
Set the main display on macOS
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Displays.
- Select the external monitor you want to use.
- Open Use as and choose Main Display.
Apple’s Displays settings guide explains the Use as control for mirroring, extending, or using a display as the main screen. For gaming, check the game’s own display selector and verify the refresh rate in Displays. A dock or adapter can limit available resolution or refresh rate, and macOS may return to the built-in screen if the external display is disconnected.

Set the primary display in GNOME
- Open the Activities overview, search for Displays, and open the Displays panel.
- Drag the display diagrams to match the physical arrangement, then choose the intended screen under Primary Display.
- Set resolution, scale, orientation, and refresh rate as needed, then select Apply.
- Confirm with Keep Changes. GNOME temporarily applies a display change and reverts it after about 20 seconds if you do not confirm—useful if the new arrangement makes the screen unusable.
These steps are for GNOME, not every Linux desktop. KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon, and other environments may use different controls. See the GNOME dual-monitor guide.
Quick checklist
- Use Identify so you select the correct physical monitor.
- Set it as the main display in Windows, macOS, or your desktop environment.
- Check the game for its own monitor selector before changing advanced settings.
- Verify the game’s resolution, refresh rate, and display mode on the target screen.
- If it still opens elsewhere, move it while windowed or temporarily switch to one display.
- On a laptop, check GPU preference separately; on a docked setup, test the display connection directly if detection or refresh rate is wrong.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting a primary monitor increase FPS?
Not by itself. It changes the operating system’s main display and can affect where applications open, but frame rate depends on the game, GPU, resolution, graphics settings, and other configuration.
Is Monitor 1 always the primary monitor?
No. Windows display numbers identify screens; they do not indicate which screen is primary, and numbering may change after reconnecting displays.

Can I set a different monitor for each game?
Some games have their own monitor or output-display selector and can remember a choice independently of Windows. Others rely on the operating system’s main display. Check each game’s display settings.
Does choosing a primary monitor choose the dedicated GPU?
No. The primary monitor is an operating-system display preference. Windows’ per-game Graphics options separately control the preferred GPU performance mode.
Why does my high-refresh monitor only offer 60 Hz?
Check that you selected the right display under Advanced display. The monitor, resolution, graphics hardware, port, cable, dock, or adapter can limit the refresh rates Windows offers.
