How to Set Your PS5 to 5 GHz Instantly

Select a separately named 5 GHz network in PS5 network settings. If both Wi-Fi bands share one name, adjust the router’s settings to make the band selectable.

The quickest dependable way to put your PS5 on 5 GHz is to connect it to a Wi-Fi network name used only by your router’s 5 GHz band. On PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, choose that network, enter its password, then run Test Internet Connection. If your router uses one name for both bands, change its Wi-Fi settings first; the console may not let you choose a band from that shared network.

Connect to a separately named 5 GHz network

PS5 hardware documentation lists WLAN operation on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. This applies to the PS5 family, though available router settings and regional Wi-Fi configurations can vary. Sony’s documented setup flow lets you select a visible Wi-Fi network, but does not describe a universal, router-independent command to force 5 GHz. Sony’s PS5 hardware guide and network setup instructions cover those points.

  1. Check your router’s Wi-Fi settings for controls such as Wi-Fi bands, Wireless networks, SSID, or Smart Connect. Give the 5 GHz band its own name, for example Home-5G, and save the change. Router menus differ by model.
  2. On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
  3. Select the uniquely named 5 GHz network and enter its Wi-Fi password. Choose Connect.
  4. Run Test Internet Connection from the network settings screen if it does not start automatically.

Because the network name is unique to the router’s 5 GHz radio, selecting it makes the intended band explicit, provided the router is configured correctly. The PS5 cannot convert a 2.4 GHz signal into 5 GHz; the router must broadcast 5 GHz and the console must be within reliable range.

If both bands use the same Wi-Fi name

With one shared SSID, the router may steer the PS5 between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The network list may not expose a band choice. These are router-side workarounds, not PS5 settings:

  • Note: 1. Our product is not compatible with the PS5 Portal. 2. Our product is incompatible with AirPods Pro 2 and does not support the dual-device pairing feature
  • Temporarily separate the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, then connect the PS5 to the 5 GHz name.
  • Temporarily disable 2.4 GHz while connecting, if the router allows it.
  • Turn off Smart Connect or band steering temporarily, if available, then choose the 5 GHz network.

Restore your preferred router configuration afterward if you want one shared name or need 2.4 GHz for other devices. Separate names make band assignment easier to see, but mean more networks to manage and less automatic movement between bands. A shared name is simpler, but makes troubleshooting and deliberate band selection less transparent.

What if the PS5 shows a “Wi-Fi Frequency Bands” option?

Some users may see a frequency-band selector in or around network setup. If it appears, choose 5 GHz. Sony’s current public setup instructions do not document this as a universal control: they list advanced settings such as IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU and proxy, and list Multi-Link Operation for PS5 Pro. If the selector is absent, use a separate 5 GHz network name or the router-side workarounds above. DNS, MTU and proxy settings do not select the Wi-Fi band.

Confirm the band and connection

  1. Check the router’s connected-device list for the PS5 and its reported band, if the router provides that detail.
  2. Confirm that the console is connected to the uniquely named 5 GHz SSID.
  3. Run the PS5’s Test Internet Connection to check that the connection works.

A faster speed-test result alone does not prove the console is on 5 GHz. Internet congestion, the router, signal strength, the ISP connection and the download server can all affect speed. For a useful comparison, test both bands from the same location under similar conditions and consider stability as well as throughput.

If the 5 GHz network does not appear or connect

  • Move the PS5 closer to the router and check that its 5 GHz radio is enabled.
  • Confirm that the network is not hidden and that you have its exact name and password.
  • Restart the router and PS5, then check the network list again.
  • If the router offers manual channel or compatibility settings, consult its manufacturer’s guidance. Available channels and settings vary by router and country, so there is no single channel to prescribe.
  • On PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection and choose Set Up Manually if the network cannot be found. Sony also documents WPS setup when the access point supports WPS. See Sony’s connection instructions.
  • If Wi-Fi remains unreliable, try a wired connection: Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect.

If the PS5 sees the network but cannot complete setup, check the router’s security configuration with its manufacturer rather than changing advanced settings blindly. Sony’s setup flow lists WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 security scenarios. Also check that the router is not configured for IPv6-only networking: PS5 supports IPv6, but Sony says it does not support an IPv6-only network, so the router must provide IPv4 as well.

Is 5 GHz the best choice for gaming?

Not in every room. 5 GHz can offer more local throughput and may avoid congestion on a busy 2.4 GHz band, but it has shorter effective range and weaker wall penetration. Choose based on the signal the PS5 actually receives:

  • Try 5 GHz when the console is fairly close to the router, the signal is strong, and downloads or streaming are the priority.
  • Try 2.4 GHz when the console is distant, separated by several walls or floors, or 5 GHz disconnects. A slower but stable connection may be preferable.
  • Use Ethernet when a cable to the router or a wired network point is practical. It avoids wireless interference and band-selection uncertainty, but still depends on the internet service and network equipment.

Neither Wi-Fi band guarantees lower ping to a game server. Online latency depends on the full route between the console and server, not just the local wireless band.

PS5 Pro: Multi-Link Operation is not a 5 GHz switch

Sony lists Multi-Link Operation (MLO) as an advanced setting for the CFI-7000 model group, corresponding to PS5 Pro. It allows compatible devices to use multiple signal bands from the same router; it is not a setting to force the console to use only 5 GHz. Sony suggests trying the connection with and without MLO if a PS5 Pro has connection problems. Ordinary PS5 and PS5 Slim owners should not look for this option. Details are in Sony’s network setup guide.

If menu labels differ

PS5 labels can change with system software. Sony’s general support page documents the standard connection path used above. To check for a software update, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings; see Sony’s system software instructions.
