It replaced the older Steam Family Sharing and Steam Family View systems and lets up to six close family members in a household access one another’s eligible games from their own Steam accounts. Create or join a family from Family Management; eligible games then appear automatically in each member’s library.
What Steam Families does
Steam Families combines shared game libraries with parental controls. The family consists of one organizer and up to five additional members. It is designed for close family members in a household, not as an unrestricted account-sharing service for unrelated friends.

- Each person uses a separate Steam account and password.
- Eligible games owned by any member appear in the family-library area of the others’ libraries.
- Ownership stays with the account that bought the game.
- Borrowers keep their own saves, achievements, Steam Cloud progress and Workshop files where the game supports those Steam features.
- Adult members can manage access and restrictions for child accounts.
Steam announced the current system as generally available on September 11, 2024. The official announcement is at Steam News.
Before you set it up
- Create or confirm a separate Steam account for every participant.
- Use the current Steam client, mobile app or a web browser; labels can differ by platform, but the stable destination is Family Management.
- Check that the games you care about are eligible. Developer opt-outs, third-party accounts, product keys, subscriptions and technical limitations can prevent sharing.
- Plan around Steam’s membership restrictions. Steam states that an adult may face a one-year wait after joining one family before joining or creating another, and a vacated family slot can also have a one-year cooldown.
- Use Steam Guard and never give another person your password. A borrower’s cheating ban can affect the owner’s copy of that game.
How to create a Steam Family and invite members
- Sign in to Steam with the organizer’s account.
- Open Family Management from Account Details or by entering the address directly.
- Choose the option to create a Steam Family and enter a name if Steam requests one.
- Invite the other Steam accounts. The organizer can invite up to five people, making six members total.
- Have each invitee sign in to their own account and accept the invitation.
- After acceptance, restart or refresh Steam if necessary, then open the Library and locate the family-library section.
- Select an eligible shared game, install it and launch it while signed in to the borrowing account.
Do not log another person into your account to authorize a computer. That was part of the legacy Family Library Sharing workflow, not the normal Steam Families setup.

How the shared library works
Access is automatic for eligible games
Steam Families shares eligible titles owned by family members as a family library. You generally cannot select one arbitrary game while hiding every other eligible purchase; adult accounts can instead use parental controls to limit what child accounts may access.
Progress stays on the player’s account
The borrower plays through their own profile, so saves, achievements and supported Steam Cloud progress remain separate from the owner’s. Buying a game does not transfer its license, and leaving a family does not transfer ownership of another member’s purchases.
Offline play has conditions
Steam says supported shared games can be played offline. A title that requires an always-online connection, external authentication or another online service may still prevent offline play.

Can two people play at the same time?
The current rule is based on copies of the same game, not on a blanket lockout of the entire family library.
| Situation | Can both play? |
|---|---|
| Two members play different family-library games | Generally yes |
| Two members play the same game with one family-owned copy | No; one copy supports one active session of that title |
| Two members play the same game with two family-owned copies | Yes, subject to the game’s own multiplayer and account requirements |
| One member plays offline | Only if the game supports Family Sharing and does not require online or external authentication |
Steam illustrates this with Portal 2: one copy cannot provide two simultaneous sessions, while two owned copies can.
Which games cannot be shared?
Eligibility is controlled per game, so verify the individual title on its Steam Store page rather than relying on a permanent exclusion list. Common reasons for exclusion include:

- Technical support limitations.
- A developer decision to opt the game out.

DLC, free-to-play games and in-game items
DLC availability depends on who owns the base game and on the title’s rules. If the borrowing account already owns the base game, it may need to purchase its own DLC instead of using the owner’s add-on. Free-to-play games and their DLC are often unsuitable for sharing because every Steam account already owns the base title. Account-bound currencies, items and external progression do not move between users. Check the specific game and DLC in Steam’s Steam Families FAQ.
Steam Families versus the old system
| Older Family Library Sharing | Current Steam Families |
|---|---|
| Authorized individual devices and accounts | Membership, invitations and Family Management |
| Often described as lending one library | Eligible games from all members form a family library |
| Guides commonly reported a whole-library lockout | Different games can run concurrently; the same title needs multiple copies |
| Steam Family View was separate | Sharing and parental controls are combined |
Child accounts and parental controls
Adult and child roles are not identical. Adults can limit which games a child can access, restrict the Store, Community or Friends Chat, set hourly or daily playtime limits, view playtime reports, approve extra-playtime or feature requests and help recover a child account. A child cannot leave the family independently; an adult or Steam Support must remove the account.

Leaving, changing or removing family members
Adults can leave a Steam Family, and adult members can remove other members. Steam’s stated rules include one-year cooldowns for changing families and for reusing some vacated slots. Because these are policy rules rather than a technical necessity, check the current Family Management page before reorganizing a household. Removing a member does not transfer that person’s purchases.
Fixes when an invitation or game is missing
The invitation is not visible
- Sign out and back in to the account that should receive the invitation.
- Reopen Family Management and confirm the invitation was sent to the correct account.
- Accept the invitation from that account, then restart or update the Steam client.
- If the status remains wrong, use Steam Support’s Steam Families page.
A shared game does not appear
- Confirm both accounts are members of the same family and are signed in correctly.
- Check the game’s Store page for Family Sharing eligibility.
- Look for third-party account, key, subscription or always-online requirements.
- Check whether an adult restricted the title for a child account.
- Restart Steam and refresh the Library.
The borrower is blocked while the owner plays
If the owner is using the same title, one copy cannot support two active sessions. The borrower must wait, or the family must own a second copy. The owner playing a different game does not normally block the borrower.
A member is outside the household
Steam describes Steam Families as a household feature for close family members. Do not assume that an unrelated friend or a distant account is supported simply because an invitation control appears.

Someone cheats on a borrowed copy
Steam states that if a family member is banned for cheating while playing another member’s copy, the owner can also be banned in that game. Other family members are not affected by that specific game ban, but this is a strong reason to share only with people you trust.
When Steam Families is a good fit
- Your household members need separate profiles, saves and achievements.
- Most desired games are eligible.
- You understand that simultaneous play of one title requires multiple owned copies.
- You accept Steam’s family-change and slot cooldown rules.
It is a poor fit when the main goal is giving unrelated friends access, playing one title simultaneously without buying another copy, or sharing games that depend on external accounts, subscriptions or always-online authentication. If two people need the same game at once, compare the cost of a second legitimate purchase on the Steam Store with the game’s multiplayer requirements.
