The rules depend on the platform, the specific title, how you want to share it, and the law where you live. If you want to lend a game temporarily, use the platform’s supported feature; if you want to lend or sell a copy outright, a compatible physical game card or disc is generally the clearer option.
What kind of access do you want to give?
- Play on another account or household console: Check whether the platform offers a supported family or console-sharing feature, and whether the particular game qualifies.
- Lend a game temporarily: A platform may let an eligible person access a game under defined conditions. That is not the same as transferring the purchase to them.
- Sell permanently: A digital purchase is commonly a license linked to an account, not a transferable copy. Check the platform’s terms and local law before assuming a digital license can be sold.
Here is what the major platform guidance supports. Platform rules and feature availability can change; the links below were checked on October 4, 2026.
How sharing and resale rules differ by platform
| Platform | Supported access described by the source | Important limits | What the source says about transfer or resale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam (PC) | Steam Families lets members access eligible games in one another’s libraries from their own accounts. Valve announced it as available to all users on September 11, 2024, replacing the older Steam Family Sharing and Family View arrangements. Valve’s announcement and FAQ | A family has up to six people total: its creator and up to five invited members. Members need multiple family-owned copies to play the same title at the same time. Developers can opt out, and third-party keys, accounts, or subscriptions can prevent sharing. Eligible games can be played offline if the game supports Family Sharing. Valve’s announcement and FAQ | Sharing does not transfer ownership. The Steam Subscriber Agreement restricts selling, transferring, renting, or licensing Steam content except where the agreement or applicable law permits it. Valve’s announcement and FAQ |
| Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 | Nintendo describes virtual game cards that can be lent to members of a Nintendo Account family group. Its online-license setting can let purchased downloads be played while connected to the internet without a virtual game card loaded, subject to device setup rules. Nintendo Support | Virtual game cards, online licenses, and a game card inserted in a console are distinct ways to access software; they are not interchangeable permissions. The support page describes the online-license option as requiring an internet connection. Nintendo Support | Digital games and DLC remain tied to the purchasing Nintendo Account; lending a virtual game card gives another family-group member access under Nintendo’s rules, not a new purchase or license transfer. Nintendo Support |
| Xbox / Microsoft | The cited Microsoft source establishes general digital-goods license rules, not the exact Xbox console-sharing configuration for a particular account or title. For those details, check the current Xbox service rules and game-specific requirements. | Microsoft says access can be lost or changed in circumstances including account or terms violations, unpaid recurring subscription fees, region changes, failure to refresh a license, or service termination. Microsoft’s Digital Goods rules | Microsoft generally licenses digital goods for personal, non-commercial use and prohibits transferring or reselling licenses, subject to stated exceptions and applicable service rules. Microsoft’s Digital Goods rules |
| PlayStation | Not stated in the cited US and UK terms. Check the current console-sharing settings and the rules for your account region. | Not stated in the cited terms. Title-specific and regional rules may also matter. | In the US, PlayStation describes Store purchases as personal licenses for private, non-commercial use and says licenses are non-transferable unless local law requires otherwise; it prohibits selling, renting, leasing, or lending content except as stated or expressly permitted. PlayStation US terms The UK terms say users must not resell disc-based or digital games unless Sony expressly authorizes it and, for a game published by another company, that publisher also authorizes it. Can I share digital games with family?
Sometimes, but “share” can mean several different things: letting another account access an eligible game, loading a virtual game card on a console, or playing on a console with an online license. None should be assumed to give the other person ownership. Before setting up access, check who qualifies as a recipient, whether the title is eligible, whether another copy is needed for simultaneous play, and whether the feature requires an internet connection.
Steam Families
Steam’s family library is designed to let members use eligible games from other members while playing on their own accounts, with their own saves, achievements, and Workshop files. Valve put the ownership distinction plainly in its September 11, 2024 announcement: “You maintain ownership of your current titles and when you purchase a new game it will still show up in your collection.” Valve’s announcement and FAQ

Nintendo family group and multiple consoles
Nintendo says its virtual game cards can be lent to members of a family group so they can play on their own console. Its online-license setting is a separate option for playing purchased downloads while online, including in certain multi-console situations when no virtual game card is loaded. Nintendo summarizes the account relationship this way: “Digital games and downloadable content are tied to the Nintendo Account that purchased them.” Nintendo Support
Can I lend a digital game to a friend?
Only if the platform’s current sharing rules allow that recipient and that particular game. Steam Families is limited to family members in a Steam Family; Nintendo describes virtual-game-card lending to members of a Nintendo Account family group. The sources cited here do not establish a general right to lend a digital game to any friend outside those supported arrangements.

If your aim is temporary access rather than a permanent transfer, use the platform’s own feature and keep the purchase account under its holder’s control. Do not treat handing over account credentials or selling an account as a permitted way to lend a game: it does not itself transfer the game license, and platform terms may restrict account or content transfers.
Can you resell digital games?
Do not assume that buying a download gives you a transferable copy to sell. The cited platform terms generally describe access as a personal or account-linked license and restrict transfer or resale, but the precise contractual wording differs by region and service. Check the agreement that applies to your account, any publisher restrictions for the game, and local consumer law before attempting a sale or transfer.

Local law can qualify or affect how contractual restrictions apply, so platform terms alone do not settle every legal question. In its March 2025 inquiry report, Australia’s Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) characterized standard-form contracts at stores including Steam and PlayStation as providing a revocable license to access and play rather than ownership of a digital copy with permanent lending rights. In the ACCC’s Australian survey, 56% of game players surveyed were unaware of that kind of licensing arrangement, and 72% considered the described arrangement quite unfair or very unfair. Those figures describe the ACCC’s Australian survey, not players in every country. ACCC Digital Platform Services Inquiry final report, March 2025

If you want a copy that can be handed to another person, a compatible physical game card or disc is a more straightforward option than trying to transfer a digital license. Nintendo’s instructions say another user can insert a physical game card into the console they want to play on. That applies to a compatible physical copy; it does not convert a digital purchase into a transferable license. Nintendo Support
