These are separate setups: add a capture source to show your own content; enable Media Share in the Streamlabs dashboard and add its widget to accept viewer requests.
Choose what you mean by sharing media
- Show your screen, an app, or a game: Add a capture source in Streamlabs Desktop. You control what appears in the scene.
- Let viewers request videos: Enable Media Share in the Streamlabs dashboard, add its widget as a source, and configure how requests are moderated.
The interface labels below follow Streamlabs’ Desktop quick-start guide dated July 22, 2026, and its Media Share guide, last updated December 18, 2025. Streamlabs does not state a specific Desktop build number in these guides, so a label or source may vary by installed release.
Show a display, app, or game
Pick a source for the content
| What viewers should see | Source | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Everything on one monitor | Display Capture | Use when the whole display should be visible. Close private windows and notifications first. |
| One application | Window Capture | Choose the intended open window and check that the correct target is selected. |
| Gameplay | Game Capture | Select the game or other target when the source setup prompts you. |
| A unified capture picker | Screen Capture, where available | Streamlabs describes a capture flow with previews and selection among available targets. |
These sources are not guaranteed to behave identically on every computer. Streamlabs’ guides do not provide a full operating-system compatibility matrix. If one source does not show the intended content, try another documented capture option and confirm the result in the preview before streaming.
Add and check the source
- Open Streamlabs Desktop and select the scene you intend to use.
- In Sources, select +.
- Choose Display Capture, Window Capture, Game Capture, or Screen Capture where available.
- Select the display, app, game, or capture target in the source setup, then confirm.
- Check the preview. Resize or reposition the source if needed, and confirm that only the intended content is visible.
Let viewers request videos with Media Share
Enable and place the widget
- Open the Streamlabs dashboard and go to All Widgets > Media Share.
- Enable Media Share and choose the moderation behavior. With auto-show, requests can appear on stream without a moderator filtering them first; use it only if trusted moderators can screen requests.
- In Streamlabs Desktop, go to Sources, select +, and add Media Share.
- Adjust the widget settings, then size and place it in the scene. Preview the scene to make sure the video area is visible where you expect.
Streamlabs’ Media Share guide documents links to public YouTube videos. It does not establish support for other services or for private or unlisted videos, so do not promise those link types to viewers. Request handling depends on your settings and moderation flow; not every request necessarily plays automatically.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. - 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Enable requests through Cloudbot chat
- Enable the Cloudbot Media Share module and the Media Share widget as described in Streamlabs’ Cloudbot guide.
- Keep the Media Share tab available in recent events.
- Tell viewers the documented request format:
!request <youtube url>.
Apply the same moderation judgment to chat requests as to other Media Share submissions. Auto-show is a choice about how requests appear, not a substitute for deciding who can be trusted to moderate them.
Set up audio separately
A visible video or captured screen does not by itself confirm that its sound is reaching the stream. Check the audio mixer and the source used for the sound you want.

Capture computer or application audio
- If the default computer audio is not already configured, Streamlabs describes adding Audio Output Capture. Do not add the same default device twice: duplicate audio sources can cause echo.
- For a single application, use Application Audio Capture and select the app. Streamlabs’ application-audio guide says to disable Desktop Audio under Settings > Audio for this setup; otherwise, unrelated computer sounds may also be captured.
- On Windows, the quick-start guide says to align Desktop Audio with the default device selected in Windows Sound Settings. On macOS, desktop audio may require audio-routing software configured as a Mic/Aux source; check the instructions for your macOS and Streamlabs versions.
Add a microphone only if you need narration
A microphone is separate from the screen or Media Share source. Add and check one if you plan to speak; it is not required just to show a display or play a Media Share video.
Protect privacy and preview the scene
- For Display Capture, close private windows and notifications, and keep account details or other sensitive information off-screen.
- For Window Capture, confirm the selected window is the one you intend to show.
- For Media Share auto-show, rely on trusted moderators who can screen requests before they appear live. Streamlabs advises trusting people with moderation or shared access.
- Before the main stream, inspect the scene preview and audio mixer. A short test recording can help reveal missing sound, echo, the wrong capture target, or misplaced layers.
Troubleshoot common sharing problems
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The screen, app, or game is not visible | The source may target the wrong display, window, or game, or the chosen source may not work as expected on this setup. | Reopen the source settings, select the intended target, and confirm it in preview. If needed, try another documented capture source. |
| The video is visible but has no sound | The relevant output or application audio may not be configured or selected. | Check the mixer and audio source. For an app-only setup, confirm the app is selected in Application Audio Capture and Desktop Audio is disabled as Streamlabs instructs. |
| Audio echoes or repeats | The same default audio device may have been added more than once. | Remove the duplicate source and check the mixer again. |
| Unrelated computer sounds are on the stream | Desktop Audio may be capturing all system sound while you intended to capture one application. | For Application Audio Capture, disable Desktop Audio under Settings > Audio and test again. |
| A Media Share request does not appear as expected | The widget, Cloudbot module, recent-events tab, or moderation behavior may not be configured as intended. | Check the dashboard’s Media Share settings, the Desktop source, Cloudbot module, and recent-events tab. Review whether requests are set to auto-show or require moderation. |
Streamlabs’ guides do not establish that every capture mode works on every operating system or configuration. Confirm the source and audio behavior in your own preview rather than assuming that a source name guarantees compatibility.
