To share your screen on a live stream, capture your display or a specific window in OBS, or use YouTube Live Control Room’s built-in sharing while streaming with a webcam. Set up the audio you want viewers to hear, check that the preview shows only what you intend to share, and make a short test before the real broadcast.
Choose a screen-sharing method

This is a practical comparison of the documented features, not a performance test. For a game stream where you want scenes, a face camera, overlays, or separate audio controls, OBS is generally the more flexible route. For a straightforward share from a supported browser, Live Control Room may require fewer setup choices.
Share your screen with OBS Studio
1. Set up OBS and a scene
- Open OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS says the wizard takes your hardware and network conditions into account.
- In the Scenes panel, select an existing scene or create one for the presentation, game, or application you plan to show.
- In Sources, select the plus button and add the capture source suited to your target. Choose display capture for the whole monitor, or window capture to show one application instead of the full desktop.
OBS’s Sources Guide lists Display Capture for Windows, Linux, and macOS 12.6 and earlier. For macOS 13, it directs users to macOS Screen Capture. Window Capture is listed for Windows, Linux, and macOS 12.6 and earlier; on macOS 13, use macOS Screen Capture. Game Capture is a Windows-only option for hardware-accelerated games, not the general choice for a browser or ordinary application. OBS Sources Guide
2. Frame what viewers should see
Check the OBS preview after adding the source. Confirm it shows the intended display or application and that important content is readable in the stream layout. If you are sharing a full monitor, close or hide private windows and notifications before going live. For a game, check that the capture follows the game rather than an unrelated window or the desktop.

3. Configure microphone and application audio
Look at the Audio Mixer meters while speaking or playing audio. OBS says desktop audio and the microphone are captured by default, but you can select devices manually under Settings → Audio if a meter does not respond or the wrong device is being captured. Make sure you know whether you want game or application sound, microphone audio, or both.
For application-specific audio, OBS documents Application Audio Capture on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. OBS 30.1 added the option to include audio with Window Capture or Game Capture sources. If you use separate Application Audio Capture sources, OBS advises disabling the global Desktop Audio source to avoid echo. 4. Review output and test
- Review your output settings in OBS before broadcasting.
- Make a short test recording or stream and check both the picture and sound. Confirm the capture source, microphone, and any application audio work as expected.
- Only begin the real stream once you have verified the preview and audio. OBS explicitly recommends testing for a few minutes rather than jumping into a first stream without a check. OBS Quick Start Guide
Share a screen through YouTube Live Control Room
YouTube’s documented built-in screen-sharing flow is for a stream started through Live Control Room using a webcam. A webcam and microphone must be connected. Once live, choose to share and select an entire screen, a window, or a browser tab. Audio from a supported browser tab is shared by default. Stop sharing through Live Control Room or the browser’s stop-sharing control. See YouTube’s instructions: Share your screen during a live stream.
This method is useful for a direct share, but it does not offer OBS’s scene-and-source composition. If your stream needs multiple visual elements or more deliberate audio routing, configure those in OBS instead.

Connect OBS or another encoder to YouTube
If you use streaming software or separate audio/video hardware, YouTube’s encoder workflow connects that software to your live broadcast. YouTube instructs creators to enter the Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup steps in Live streaming encoder settings. Treat the stream key as private account access information.
Before you share: a quick preflight
- Confirm the preview contains the intended display, window, or tab—not other open material.
- Check that the microphone meter responds and that the selected input is the one you intend to use.
- If viewers should hear game or application sound, verify that audio source separately; a visible capture does not guarantee that its sound is included.
- Listen for echo if desktop audio and an application-specific source are both active.
- Make a short test recording or stream before the broadcast.
- Only share material you are allowed to show. Screen sharing can expose private information or copyrighted content just as readily as it can show a game or presentation.
Troubleshoot common screen-sharing problems
The preview is blank or shows the wrong window
First confirm that the selected source matches what you want to show: display capture for the whole monitor, or window capture for one app on supported systems. On macOS 13, OBS directs users to macOS Screen Capture rather than the older source names. The exact operating-system permission prompts and recovery steps vary and are not established here; consult current OBS and operating-system instructions if the selected capture source remains blank.

Viewers can see the screen but cannot hear the app
Check the Audio Mixer meters and the selected devices in Settings → Audio. Application audio may require a separate source, and the documented Application Audio Capture support depends on Windows version. Make a test recording to confirm what is actually being captured.
The audio has an echo
If you have added a separate Application Audio Capture source, check whether global Desktop Audio is also capturing the same sound. OBS advises disabling global Desktop Audio when using separate application audio sources to avoid echo.

YouTube does not receive the encoder stream
Check that the encoder has the Live server URL and stream key entered as YouTube specifies. Confirm you are using the correct live setup in YouTube and encoder, then test again before the public broadcast.
