How to Share Your Screen While Streaming on YouTube

Use encoder software for gameplay and a more controlled YouTube Live production, or share a screen, window, or tab through Live Control Room’s webcam workflow.

To share a screen on YouTube Live, use encoder software for gameplay or a more controlled production, or use YouTube Live Control Room’s webcam workflow for a simple presentation. The webcam option can share a whole screen, window, or browser tab, but requires a connected webcam and microphone.

Choose a screen-sharing method

Option What you need Best suited to
Encoder software A computer running an encoder; a webcam is not required for screen capture Gameplay, overlays, multiple sources, and a more controlled layout
Live Control Room webcam sharing A connected webcam and microphone A straightforward presentation using a browser-based workflow

YouTube describes encoders as a way to share a screen or broadcast gameplay, as well as manage more advanced productions. They can be software applications or standalone hardware. YouTube’s encoder guide and verified-encoder list explain the options; listed products are not made by YouTube.

Share your screen using encoder software

  1. Check channel eligibility first. In YouTube Studio, confirm that live streaming is available on your channel. YouTube says a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days is required. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this ahead of your stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
  2. Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and use Live Control Room to create a stream or select an existing one. Copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
  3. Connect the encoder. Choose the encoder’s YouTube preset if it offers one. Otherwise, enter the stream URL and matching key in the encoder’s stream settings. If you configure the server manually, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room and its corresponding key. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over a TLS/SSL connection; see its RTMPS guidance.
  4. Add the screen or game. In the encoder, add a display capture source to show the full desktop, or a window capture source to show one application. Select the game or application and check the encoder preview for the intended crop, overlays, and visible desktop notifications. Names and controls vary by encoder.
  5. Start sending video and inspect the preview. Start the encoder, then wait for its incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check the video and audio there before selecting Go live. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing beforehand and using audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast.
  6. End the broadcast cleanly. End the event in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder setup instructions.

Protect the stream key

Do not show the key on screen or share it publicly. If you think it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings, then update the encoder with the new key before the next broadcast.

Share a screen, window, or tab from Live Control Room

  1. Connect a webcam and microphone, then start the Live Control Room webcam workflow.
  2. After going live, select Share screen.
  3. Choose the entire screen, a window, or a browser tab in the browser’s sharing prompt, then select Share.
  4. To finish sharing, select Stop Sharing in Live Control Room or use the browser’s stop-sharing control.

YouTube documents this workflow in its webcam livestream instructions. When sharing a browser tab that supports webcam, that tab’s audio is shared by default. This option is convenient for a simple presentation; choose an encoder when you need gameplay capture, overlays, or several sources.

Check eligibility, audio, and upload capacity

Confirm account readiness

YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says creators must be at least 16, have a verified channel, and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Account eligibility and policies can change, so confirm the current status in YouTube Studio. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. See Get started with live streaming.

Test the actual stream setup

Test with a game or presentation, microphone, and movement similar to what you will use on air. Confirm that the encoder preview and Live Control Room preview both show the right content, then monitor stream health and any messages during the broadcast. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled stream in its streaming tips.

Leave bandwidth headroom

YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate. Other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. Check the upload capacity available at the streaming location, not just the plan’s advertised speed. YouTube covers this in its live streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common screen-sharing problems

  • Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification, account restrictions, and whether first-time activation is still pending. Activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • The encoder does not connect: Confirm that the stream URL and key came from the same stream in Live Control Room, and check for typing errors. For manual server settings, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room.
  • The preview is missing or shows the wrong content: Confirm the encoder is running and that the selected display or application window is the one you intend to share. Check the incoming preview before going live.
  • Viewers report buffering or unstable video: Check available upload bandwidth and reduce competing network use. Leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends beyond your stream bitrate.
  • Tab audio is missing: In the webcam workflow, tab audio is shared by default for tabs that support webcam. If audio still is not present, check that the correct tab was shared and verify the audio in the Live Control Room preview.
  • The screen stays shared after the presentation: Select Stop Sharing in Live Control Room or use the browser’s stop-sharing control, then end the stream when finished.
