To ship a fragile collectible figure safely, protect its surface, cushion it so it cannot move, and—when its fragility or value warrants it—place a closed inner box inside a larger cushioned outer box. Pack the figure and the parcel as separate layers: a sturdy carton cannot prevent scuffs from rough wrapping, and careful wrapping cannot prevent damage if the parcel’s contents shift.
Prepare the figure and protect its finish
- Remove only parts designed to detach. If the base, stand, or accessories come off safely, pack them separately so they cannot strike the figure in transit. Do not force a joint or connection that is not meant to detach.
- Shield delicate surfaces. For painted, flocked, or otherwise delicate finishes, place a clean, nonabrasive barrier against the surface before adding cushioning. Carriers recommend wrapping fragile objects, but their general instructions do not establish which materials are safe for every collectible finish. If you are unsure, check the figure maker’s care guidance or test an unfamiliar material in an inconspicuous spot.
- Wrap the figure individually. Cushion projecting parts and fragile joints without bending thin pieces or pressing loose accessories against the figure. If using bubble wrap, UPS advises applying multiple layers with the flat side facing the item; keep any finish-sensitive surface from direct contact if the material could abrade or mark it. Pack the figure so it cannot shift
Use a sturdy inner box
Choose a sound carton with attached flaps and enough room for cushioning. Center the wrapped figure and fill the surrounding space so it cannot move, while avoiding pressure against the box walls, corners, or other hard objects. If accessories are packed in the same inner box, cushion and secure them separately.
Close the box and gently check whether anything inside shifts or makes noise. USPS advises adding cushioning when contents move or can be heard moving. The check is for the fully packed, closed parcel—not for shaking an exposed or loosely protected figure. See USPS package preparation guidance.
Double-box when extra protection is appropriate
For a particularly fragile, valuable, or awkwardly shaped figure, put the closed inner box inside a larger outer box. Leave space around the inner box and cushion it on all sides so it cannot move or sit directly against the outer carton. UPS recommends a two-box method for fragile goods. FedEx’s breakables guide specifies 3 inches of cushioning in and around the inner box; treat that as FedEx guidance, not a universal dimension that should be forced into every parcel.

A single box may be suitable when the figure and its packaging can be securely cushioned without movement. The decision depends on the figure’s fragility, value, shape, and the room available for cushioning; the cited carrier guidance recommends double-boxing fragile items but does not establish a figure-specific damage rate or guarantee.
Choose cushioning and shipping supplies
- Corrugated boxes: Use sturdy inner and outer cartons sized to leave room for cushioning. A double-wall outer box can be a useful option to consider, but select a box for the parcel’s size and stated capacity rather than relying on the label alone. UPS describes the two-box method for fragile shipments.
- Bubble wrap or air-cellular cushioning: Use it as a cushioning layer around an individually protected figure or inner box. UPS recommends multiple bubble-wrap layers and placing the flat side toward the item; a suitable barrier may still be needed for a delicate finish.
- Packing paper or other void fill: Add enough around the item or inner box to restrain movement. USPS emphasizes cushioning that prevents shifting, and UPS lists several fill options. Choose material that fits the shape and will not settle in a way that leaves empty space.
- Shipping tape: Use tape intended for packaging to close the carton and reinforce its seams. USPS recommends strong packaging tape and seam reinforcement.
Seal, label, and hand off the parcel
- Close and reinforce the carton. Tape the closure and seams securely with shipping tape, following USPS package-preparation guidance.
- Address it clearly. Place the shipping label on a broad, flat surface and secure it. UPS advises including a duplicate delivery and return address inside the package; see its packaging tips.
- Check the applicable shipping rules. Requirements can vary by carrier, service, destination, and item. Review the current rules for the shipment you are making. A “Fragile” marking does not replace adequate cushioning and secure packing.
When to use a professional packing service
If the figure is unusually valuable, delicate, or difficult to fit safely into a box, consider asking a local packing provider whether it handles fragile or unique items. FedEx describes packing service for such items at FedEx Office, and UPS points customers to The UPS Store for supplies and packing help.
