For an eligible YouTube Live stream, enable Closed captions, choose Automatic captions, and set the video language to English. YouTube says live automatic captions require normal latency, are available only in English, and may not yet be enabled for every channel. Because YouTube’s guidance does not specifically cover every continuous loop of prerecorded lectures, test your actual stream before relying on captions.
Choose the right caption method
| Method | What it requires | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic live captions | Enable Automatic captions for the stream and select English. | Channel rollout, normal latency, and audio conditions affect availability and quality; live captions do not remain on the recording. |
| Professionally supplied captions | Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 caption data or supported caption software sending captions through HTTP. | Requires compatible caption data or a caption-delivery workflow; YouTube allows one caption feed per stream entry point. |
YouTube documents both methods for live streams generally, but does not specifically establish whether every 24/7 prerecorded lecture loop behaves like a conventional live event. Test the exact setup and inspect both the live stream and its recording.
Turn on YouTube automatic live captions
- In YouTube, select Create → Go live, then choose Stream.
- Open the stream settings and turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Automatic captions as the caption source.
- Set the video language to English.
- Use normal latency. YouTube says automatic live captions are not available with low or ultra-low latency.
- Start the stream and check that captions appear during playback. If the Automatic captions option is missing, the feature may not yet have rolled out to your channel.
YouTube warns that automatic speech recognition can make mistakes. Clear audio, the selected language, silence, and overlapping speakers can all affect results; accents, dialects, mispronunciations, and background noise can also reduce recognition quality. Review the resulting captions rather than assuming the live text is exact. YouTube’s live automatic-caption guidance describes availability and limitations.
Provide captions through a professional workflow
If automatic captions are unavailable or do not meet your needs, YouTube documents two live-caption delivery approaches: captions embedded in the video, or supported caption software that sends captions through HTTP POSTs.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- In the stream’s closed-caption settings, select Embedded 608/708.
- Configure your encoder to include EIA 608/CEA 708 caption data in the video stream.
- Test the stream and confirm that the captions reach viewers.
Caption software sent over HTTP
- Configure closed captions for the stream in YouTube.
- Copy the signed captions ingestion URL and provide it to the captioner or caption software.
- Coordinate the caption feed with the stream. YouTube’s event instructions recommend adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay, and each stream entry point supports one caption feed.
- Test the caption delivery before depending on it for a continuous broadcast.
YouTube’s live-caption documentation names Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net. It describes StreamText.Net as cloud-based caption delivery software compatible with speech-to-text platforms. Check current vendor requirements and availability directly before selecting a service.
Check captions on the recording after the stream
Live automatic captions and recording captions are separate. YouTube says the live automatic captions disappear when the stream ends; it generates new captions for the video-on-demand (VOD) recording, and those may differ from the live captions. After the stream, open the recording and review its generated captions separately. Do not assume the live captions will carry over.

Troubleshoot missing or inaccurate captions
- No Automatic captions option: YouTube describes the feature rollout as gradual, so it may not yet be enabled for your channel. Check the stream settings again as availability changes.
- Captions do not appear at low or ultra-low latency: Switch to normal latency, the mode YouTube specifies for live automatic captions.
- Words are wrong or missing: Check that English is selected and listen for unclear audio, background noise, overlapping speakers, long silence, or pronunciation and dialect differences.
- Live captions disappear when the broadcast ends: This is expected. Check the separately generated captions on the VOD recording.
- Automatic captions are unsuitable: Use a supported embedded-caption setup or HTTP caption-ingestion workflow, and verify the configuration with a test stream.
