Use OBS Studio to send one continuous program to a scheduled YouTube Live event, switching from each prerecorded session to a sponsor scene and back. Create a Media Source scene for each talk, an Image or Image Slide Show scene for sponsor graphics, and rehearse the full sequence before the event.
How the setup works
YouTube Live receives the encoder’s outgoing program, so OBS controls what viewers see between talks. Schedule the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then send OBS’s composed video and audio to it using the event’s stream URL and key. The key functions like a password; keep it private. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers scheduling, connecting an encoder, checking the preview, and going live.
For precise control, build separate OBS scenes for the sessions and sponsor interval. At the end of a talk, switch to the sponsor scene, hold it for the agreed interval, then switch to the next talk. Use OBS’s Preview/Program workflow to check the next scene before putting it on air.
Choose how to present the sponsor graphics

Build the session and sponsor scenes in OBS
- Create a scene for each prerecorded session. In OBS, add a Media Source and select the local video file. Media Source supports common video formats and options including looping and restarting playback when the source becomes active. For a one-time talk, check its playback behavior so it starts as intended when you switch to the scene. OBS Media Sources
- Create a sponsor scene. Add an Image source for a single graphic, or an Image Slide Show source for multiple graphics. Configure the slideshow’s order, duration, transition, and whether it should loop or be advanced manually.
- Set transitions and verify audio. OBS supports transitions such as cut and fade when changing scenes. Check that session audio is present at the intended level and that the sponsor scene does not accidentally retain or introduce unwanted audio. OBS Quick Start Guide
- Arrange the running order. Put the scenes in the order of the event and rehearse the sequence: session, sponsor interval, next session. Use Preview to prepare the next scene and Program to put it on air.
Choose manual scene changes or a playlist
Separate Media Source scenes are usually the clearest choice when an operator needs to control exactly when each talk ends and the sponsor interval begins. For multiple videos that should play as a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and looping, but VLC must also be installed. A playlist can reduce manual playback management; separate scenes make the session-to-sponsor transitions easier to time deliberately. OBS Media Sources
Schedule and connect the YouTube Live event
- Schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select Manage to schedule a stream. Set the title, privacy, and event details. A scheduled event can be promoted, and viewers can opt to receive reminders. YouTube encoder workflow
- Copy the stream URL and key. Enter them in OBS’s stream settings for the scheduled event. Do not publish or share the key.
- Start OBS and inspect YouTube’s preview. Confirm the video and audio are reaching the correct event before selecting Go live in Live Control Room.
- End the broadcast cleanly. At the conclusion, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube encoder workflow
Rehearse and run the show
- Set up the encoder well ahead of time. YouTube recommends configuring it at least two hours before the event and starting it at least fifteen minutes beforehand. YouTube live streaming tips
- Run a test of the complete sequence—not just a single video. Check playback start and end, sponsor slide timing, every scene change, audio, and what appears when a file finishes.
- Open the public or unlisted watch page and confirm the picture and sound there, in addition to checking the Live Control Room preview.
- Monitor stream health while the program is running. If you need to change a scene, verify the intended next scene in Preview before taking it to Program.
Keep sponsor slides separate from YouTube’s break slate
YouTube’s Live Control Room has a “Take a Break” away slate, including an encoder browser-source overlay. It is intended for temporary breaks; it does not replace an OBS sponsor scene when you need a planned, timed interstitial between prerecorded sessions. YouTube: Take a break during a live stream

Common problems and fixes
- The event preview is blank or does not show OBS: Confirm OBS is streaming to the scheduled event’s stream URL and key, then check the Live Control Room preview before going live.
- A talk starts at the wrong point or repeats: Review that Media Source’s playback options, including restart when active and looping, and test the scene from its beginning.
- The sponsor graphic is missing or does not rotate: Check that the correct Image or Image Slide Show source is in the sponsor scene, then verify the slideshow’s playback order, duration, and automatic or manual change setting.
- Audio is absent or carries into the sponsor interval: Test the actual scene sequence and inspect the audio sources and levels in OBS for both session and sponsor scenes.
- Scene changes are mistimed: Rehearse the program with the actual files and assigned sponsor duration; use separate scenes when an operator needs exact control over each interval.
