Press Ctrl + Alt + F while StarCraft II is running to toggle its built-in FPS/performance display. Press the same keys again to hide it. For the most reliable result, use the shortcut after loading a campaign mission, custom game, replay, or multiplayer match.
Show FPS with StarCraft II’s built-in counter
- Launch StarCraft II from Battle.net (or your supported desktop setup).
- Enter gameplay—a campaign mission, replay, custom game, or multiplayer match.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + F simultaneously.
- Look on the game screen for the FPS/performance readout.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + F again whenever you want to remove it.
The shortcut is the currently reported StarCraft II toggle in a Blizzard-hosted forum discussion: Blizzard’s StarCraft II forum. Blizzard’s public support site does not prominently maintain a dedicated article for this shortcut, so treat that page as practical Blizzard-community documentation rather than a formal game manual.
If Ctrl + Alt + F does nothing
- Focus the game: click inside the StarCraft II window before pressing the keys. The Battle.net launcher itself may not respond; enter a game and try again.
- Press the keys together: hold Ctrl and Alt, then press F rather than entering the keys as separate commands.
- Check keyboard software: laptop hotkey utilities, compact-keyboard layers, accessibility tools, recording programs, and GPU overlays can capture global shortcuts. Temporarily disable those hotkeys and retry.
- Test another display mode: try the active game window in fullscreen, borderless, or windowed mode if the counter vanishes after changing modes.
- Restart the client: close StarCraft II completely, relaunch it, and test inside a mission or match.
- Use an external counter: the alternatives below can confirm whether the problem is limited to the native overlay.
If the counter disappears after Alt-Tabbing, return to the active game window first. Overlay behavior can change when StarCraft II loses focus, particularly in fullscreen or compatibility configurations; the same Blizzard forum discussion describes background behavior: forum reference.

External tools are optional. They can show more diagnostic information, but each is a separate overlay and may conflict with another one.

NVIDIA App
NVIDIA’s instructions for the in-game performance and latency overlay are available at NVIDIA Support. Its overlay can report more than FPS, which is useful when investigating a graphics or thermal limit, but its number is measured externally and may not match StarCraft II’s counter exactly.
Steam
Steam describes its newer in-game performance monitor, including expanded performance information and generated-frame distinctions where supported, in its Steam News documentation. The Steam overlay must be active for the monitor to work.

AMD Software and Xbox Game Bar
AMD users should follow the labels shown in their installed Adrenalin release rather than relying on a permanent universal hotkey. Microsoft’s overview of the Windows widget is at Get to know Xbox Game Bar on Windows. The software itself is available from AMD; the NVIDIA App is at NVIDIA’s official page.

How to read the number
- FPS is frames per second—the number of rendered images produced over time. It measures local rendering, not internet quality.
- A high number is not automatically useful if it already matches your monitor’s refresh rate. Frame pacing, input latency, V-Sync, and the display’s refresh rate also affect how smooth the game feels.
- Compare menus, ordinary gameplay, and large late-game battles separately. Heavy battles can reduce performance because both simulation and rendering workloads increase; a brief dip is different from sustained low FPS.
- Fluctuations can come from CPU or GPU limits, background programs, thermal throttling, drivers, or an in-game frame-rate cap. The native counter alone cannot identify which component is responsible.
- Ping/latency is different: network delay can make multiplayer feel slow even when FPS is normal. Conversely, low FPS can cause visual stutter without any network problem.
- If NVIDIA, AMD, Steam, and StarCraft II show different values, that does not automatically indicate an error. Tools can use different sampling windows and frame definitions.
When another overlay is the one you are seeing
Pressing Ctrl + Alt + F only controls StarCraft II’s native display. A counter with configurable temperatures, utilization, or clock speeds is likely from NVIDIA, AMD, Steam, or another utility. NVIDIA’s overlay is managed with Alt + Z and Alt + R; Steam’s is controlled in Steam’s in-game settings; AMD’s is controlled in AMD Software; and Xbox Game Bar appears as a pinned Windows Performance widget. Disable the counter in the utility that created it.

No. StarCraft II’s shortcut requires no download, account, subscription, accessory, or hardware upgrade. NVIDIA App, AMD Software, Xbox Game Bar, and Steam are free options when their compatibility requirements are met. Purchasing benchmarking software or a new GPU before establishing that low FPS is actually the problem adds cost without solving the basic task.
Why editing Variables.txt is usually the wrong first step
Community troubleshooting discussions sometimes mention Variables.txt for frame-rate caps and related settings, including this Blizzard forum thread. That is not the simplest way to display a live counter. Use Ctrl + Alt + F first; investigate configuration files only for a separate, specifically identified performance-setting problem.
