To rotate recorded gameplay on a YouTube livestream, add the files to an OBS Studio VLC Video source, then enable Loop Playlist and, if wanted, Shuffle Playlist. Set the stream title and type in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Those are separate controls: OBS playlist playback does not automatically update YouTube’s displayed title or game when the next VOD starts.
What YouTube viewers will see
YouTube stream metadata and the video playing in OBS are managed separately. YouTube Help advises choosing a stream type such as Gaming or People & Blogs to reach the relevant audience; set the stream’s title and type in the Live Control Room. The documented OBS playlist and YouTube metadata controls do not establish that YouTube changes the displayed game or title as a playlist advances.
If your playlist contains different games, keep the stream title and type accurate for the stream and update them when appropriate. Do not promise viewers that the metadata will follow each VOD automatically. Any plugin, API workflow, or other automation for per-game changes needs to be independently verified before you rely on it.
Set up a rotating VOD playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation specifies matching 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the relevant OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and add the local gameplay recordings you have permission to rebroadcast to its playlist.
- Choose playback order. Enable Shuffle Playlist to randomize playback, or leave it off for the listed order. Shuffle and looping are independent controls.
- Choose what happens at the end. Enable Loop Playlist to restart the playlist after its final item. If you do not enable it, the playlist does not restart through that setting.
- Check hidden-source behavior. If the VLC source is used in scenes that may be hidden, review its playback behavior. OBS lists options that can stop, pause, or continue playback while hidden. Choose the behavior that fits your scene changes and verify it in a private test.
Configure YouTube and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
- Set the stream title and type/category there. Choose Gaming when that accurately describes the content; YouTube’s guidance says to choose a stream type such as Gaming or People & Blogs to reach the relevant audience.
- In OBS, configure the YouTube encoder connection with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s stream settings. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not share it publicly, and replace it if it is exposed.
- Start the encoder connection and check the YouTube preview before going live. Confirm that the right scene and VOD are visible and that audio is present.
- When the stream moves to a different game, update YouTube metadata if needed. Do not assume the VLC playlist will change it for you.
The cited setup guidance does not specify a universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval for every creator’s connection and stream. Use the current recommendations shown in YouTube’s encoder setup for your selected stream, and test the complete path before relying on a long broadcast.

Permissions and archive planning
Only add recordings you have the rights and permissions to rebroadcast. The fact that a VOD is already on YouTube or belongs to a creator does not by itself establish permission for a separate livestream. Copyright permission and YouTube monetization eligibility are also distinct questions; assess the actual material and applicable platform rules rather than assuming a playlist is safe because it plays correctly.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive backup. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the broadcast matters, record a local copy rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC, matching OBS’s architecture. OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Restart OBS after installing if the source still does not appear.
- The playlist ends instead of restarting: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.
- Videos play in the same order every time: Enable Shuffle Playlist if randomized playback is what you want. It is separate from the loop setting.
- Playback stops or continues unexpectedly during a scene change: Review the VLC source’s behavior while hidden; OBS provides stop, pause, and continue choices.
- The YouTube game or title does not change with the VOD: This is not an automatic behavior established by the documented controls. Edit stream metadata in YouTube Studio when appropriate, or use only an independently verified integration.
- YouTube does not show the expected preview: Check that OBS is connected using the stream URL and key from the selected YouTube stream, and inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live.
- The broadcast is important but no archive appears: Keep a local recording. Streams beyond 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube.
