To show YouTube chat over the video viewers watch, add a chat overlay URL to your encoder as a Browser source. OBS does not provide its own chat overlay; a third-party overlay service supplies the widget. If you mean chat on a website instead, use YouTube’s live-chat iframe and match its domain setting.
Show YouTube chat in your OBS stream
This route puts chat into the outgoing video, so viewers see it over the stream. You need an active or scheduled YouTube live stream, an overlay that supports YouTube, and OBS Studio. YouTube describes encoder streaming as useful for gameplay and overlays (YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance).
- Start or schedule your YouTube live stream. Make the live video and its chat available before configuring the overlay.
- Create a chat overlay. Choose a third-party service or widget that supports YouTube chat. OBS does not supply the overlay itself; its official FAQ recommends embedding third-party chat overlays with Browser Source (OBS Project FAQ).
- Copy the overlay URL. For example, StreamElements documents creating an overlay that includes chat and copying its URL from its dashboard or editor (StreamElements overlay instructions; StreamElements support article). This is one documented option, not a claim that it is the only provider or that it is free.
- Add it to OBS. Select the scene, go to Sources, choose +, then Browser. Paste the overlay URL and set the source width and height to fit your stream canvas. OBS describes Browser Source as a web page added to a scene and notes chat boxes as a common use (OBS Browser Source guide).
- Position and check it. Put the Browser source above the game or other video source in the Sources list, then move and resize it in the preview. Check the scene at the output size: messages should be readable without covering important gameplay or other content. Confirm the overlay displays messages before going live.
If chat does not appear
- Check that the overlay service supports YouTube and that you copied the overlay URL, rather than a dashboard or editor URL.
- Confirm the Browser source is enabled, has the intended dimensions, and sits above the content it should cover.
- Make sure the YouTube stream and chat are available; a scheduled or offline event may not yet provide live messages.
- Recheck the overlay service’s current setup instructions if its dashboard labels have changed.
Put chat on a website instead
If you want visitors to read chat on a web page—not see it baked into the stream video—YouTube documents an iframe route. Get the video ID from the live watch-page URL and the domain of the page that will host the iframe. Construct the chat URL as follows:

Replace VIDEO_ID and YOUR_DOMAIN with the corresponding values. The embed_domain must match the hosting page’s domain or the chat will not open. YouTube also says this live-chat embed is unavailable on mobile web (YouTube live chat help).
This iframe instruction is for a website. It is not a guaranteed transparent OBS widget; for chat in an OBS scene, use a third-party overlay in a Browser source.
