How to Sideload Apps on an Xbox in Developer Mode

Sideload an app you built or are authorized to deploy using a signed appx package and Xbox Device Portal. Check current Xbox-specific activation and package requirements first.

To manually sideload an app on an Xbox, prepare a signed appx package and use the Home tab in Xbox Device Portal to install it and any required dependencies. This is a developer workflow for apps you built or are authorized to deploy—not a way to install arbitrary retail games or unauthorized content. Microsoft’s public guidance does not establish current console activation steps or every Device Portal screen, so use the linked Xbox-specific instructions for those details.

What you need to know before sideloading

Developer Mode and Retail Mode are separate console environments. In Developer Mode, the console’s Home button opens Dev Home; in Retail Mode, it opens the normal retail Home experience. Microsoft’s UWP FAQ, updated January 14, 2026, says a user must be signed in to deploy an app and describes leaving Developer Mode from Dev Home. Read Microsoft’s Xbox UWP FAQ.

Check that the Xbox model and app format you intend to use are supported by current Xbox developer documentation. The public guidance discussed here focuses on UWP development and often names Xbox One; it does not establish compatibility for every Xbox Series console or package type. Microsoft’s FAQ also says Xbox no longer supports x86 app development or x86 app submissions to the store, but that statement does not resolve every console-generation compatibility question.

Do not confuse a retail console configured for Developer Mode with an Xbox development kit. The public UWP instructions cover app development and manual sideloading; kit-specific procedures are not retail-console instructions.

Prepare a package the Xbox can install

Microsoft’s manual workflow starts with a signed appx package. The package must be signed with a certificate trusted by the target device; Microsoft’s general Visual Studio packaging guidance explains that requirement, but it is not a substitute for Xbox-specific certificate and package instructions. See Microsoft’s Visual Studio packaging guidance.

Use the Xbox-specific documentation to confirm the package format, target architecture, and certificate-trust process for your console. Do not install a package from an untrusted source or disable security protections to make it work. Microsoft’s broader sideloading guidance describes the security implications of installing apps outside an official source for Windows 10 and 11; it should not be read as a guide to Xbox setup. Read Microsoft’s Windows sideloading guidance.

Install the app through Xbox Device Portal

  1. Activate Developer Mode using the current Xbox instructions. Microsoft’s UWP FAQ points to the Xbox One Developer Mode Activation guide, but the activation screens and eligibility steps are not established by the cited public pages here. Follow the current Xbox-specific activation guide rather than relying on a remembered menu path.
  2. Sign in on the console. Microsoft says a user must be signed in to deploy an app.
  3. Make the package available to your development setup. Have the signed appx package and any dependencies required by the app ready. Confirm the package and trust requirements in the Xbox documentation for your device.
  4. Open Xbox Device Portal and use its Home tab to sideload. Microsoft’s Xbox Media App Development Options identifies the Home tab as the entry point for installing the app and its dependencies. Follow the current Xbox Device Portal instructions for its address, connection, authentication, and controls; those exact details are not specified in the cited page.
  5. Check the deployment result on the console. If installation fails, verify Developer Mode is active, a user is signed in, the PC can reach the console’s IP address, and the development environment is configured. Microsoft recommends a wired connection for best deployment performance.

Choose Device Portal or Visual Studio deployment

Use the path that matches what you have ready. Microsoft’s FAQ separately addresses Visual Studio deployment, while its manual sideloading page describes installing a built package through Device Portal. The cited pages do not establish that one route is faster or more compatible.

Route Best fit What the documentation establishes
Xbox Device Portal You already have a built, signed package and need to install it manually. The Home tab is used to sideload the app and its dependencies. Microsoft Learn
Visual Studio You are deploying from a development environment rather than installing a package manually. Microsoft’s FAQ addresses deployment from Visual Studio; the cited FAQ does not establish a comparative speed or compatibility advantage. Microsoft Learn

Switch back to Retail Mode

From Dev Home, choose Leave developer mode. Microsoft says the console restarts into Retail Mode, where the Home button returns to the retail Home experience. See the Xbox UWP FAQ.

Fix common deployment problems

  • Deployment cannot reach the console: Check that the PC can reach the console’s IP address and that your development environment is configured. A wired connection is Microsoft’s recommendation for best deployment performance.
  • The console is showing the retail interface: Confirm the console is in Developer Mode; Dev Home is the mode-specific Home experience.
  • Deployment is rejected or the app will not install: Confirm the user is signed in, the package is appropriate for the Xbox and signed with a certificate the device trusts, and required dependencies are included.
  • You are trying to install a retail game: This workflow is for developer app packages. Developer Mode does not make arbitrary retail games or unauthorized content installable.
