To simulcast to YouTube and Twitch, prepare a YouTube Live event, then use an encoder that can send the same program to both platforms or a relay that distributes one feed to both. Confirm YouTube Live eligibility, enter each destination’s stream settings where required, test both outputs, and monitor them while live. Twitch generally permits simulcasting unless your agreement with Twitch requires exclusivity, but its rules require a comparable Twitch viewing experience and prohibit directing Twitch viewers to the concurrent stream elsewhere.
Before you start
- YouTube eligibility: Live streaming must be enabled on a verified channel, and YouTube says the channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take at least 24 hours, so do not leave this until the event day. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A sending method: You need an encoder configured for multiple outputs or a relay service that accepts one feed and forwards it to both platforms. Controls and compatibility vary; YouTube’s cross-platform instructions describe the general process, not a verified feature set for every encoder or relay.
- Reliable upload: Your connection must sustain the encoder’s outgoing video and audio. The required upload rate depends on your settings and whether your setup sends one feed or separate feeds to each destination. YouTube calls sufficient upload speed critical but does not establish one universal number for every setup. See Stream across platforms.
- Destination details: Keep each platform’s stream URL and key available if your chosen encoder requires them. Some encoders handle destination details internally.
- Policy check: Review Twitch’s simulcasting rules, especially if you have an agreement with Twitch that may require exclusivity.
Choose how to send the stream
Multiple-output encoder
An encoder with multi-destination output sends the program to YouTube and Twitch directly. Check that it supports both destinations under their current workflows, and determine whether it creates one or multiple outbound feeds. Multiple feeds can demand more of the creator’s upload connection; do not assume that a single configured video bitrate is the total connection requirement.
Third-party relay
A relay receives a feed from your encoder and forwards it to both services. This can reduce the number of separate destination outputs your computer must originate, but it adds another service and account to your setup. Verify compatibility, account requirements, and how the relay handles destination keys before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
Which approach fits?
| Consideration | Multiple-output encoder | Third-party relay |
|---|---|---|
| Outbound connection | May send separate feeds from your connection; check the encoder’s behavior and plan for the combined demand. | Typically receives a feed for redistribution; check the provider’s requirements and how it forwards outputs. |
| Compatibility | Confirm the encoder supports both destinations and their current stream settings. | Confirm the relay supports both destinations and the encoder you use. |
| Cross-platform chat | Chat handling depends on separate tools or features; it is not inherent in sending video to two platforms. | Some services may offer chat features, but verify the specific provider rather than assuming they are included. |
| Accounts and reliability | Requires a suitable encoder configuration and working platform destinations. | Adds a third-party service and its account and service requirements to the workflow. |
The official platform guidance establishes the need for destination settings and sufficient upload capacity, but does not rank or validate named encoders or relay providers. A wired Ethernet connection can be a sensible way to connect an encoder computer to your network, but a cable does not increase the upload capacity of your internet service.

Set up and start both streams
- Enable YouTube Live in advance. Confirm the channel is verified and eligible, and allow at least 24 hours for first-time activation if needed. YouTube also lists an age requirement in its getting-started guidance.
- Create or schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and open its stream settings. Copy the stream URL and key into your encoder if it needs them. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the URL and key workflow; exact controls may change.
- Get Twitch’s destination settings. Use Twitch’s current creator workflow to obtain the settings required by your encoder or relay. Enter them for the Twitch destination. Follow the selected tool’s instructions; there is no single third-party interface that applies to every setup.
- Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes. Choose settings your encoder and upload connection can sustain for both outputs. There is no single bitrate or resolution that fits every game, connection, encoder, and routing method. Use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance as a reference for the YouTube output, and check your selected tool’s requirements for Twitch. Do not assume YouTube’s transcoding guarantees identical playback options or quality for every Twitch viewer.
- Run a representative test. Send a test with game audio, voice audio if applicable, and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and open the Twitch output to make sure both receive picture and sound.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Confirm both destinations are live, then keep an eye on picture, sound, and stream health. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring in its streaming tips.
- End it using the chosen workflow. Stop the outputs using the encoder or relay and platform controls required by your configuration. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder instructions.
Protect the stream keys
Treat a stream key as a credential: YouTube describes it as a password and address for the stream. Do not share it publicly or include it in a broadcast overlay or screen capture. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement key. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Follow Twitch’s simulcasting rules
Twitch’s Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ says simulcasting is allowed unless an agreement with Twitch requires exclusivity. The rules also cover the experience and how you address viewers, not just whether the technical feed works.

- Keep the Twitch viewing experience at least comparable to the experience on your other destinations. Do not intentionally give Twitch viewers lower video quality.
- Do not use your Twitch broadcast to actively promote another live-streaming service or urge viewers to leave Twitch for the concurrent broadcast. Twitch’s wording is: “Twitch may not be used to drive users to a live stream on another platform or service.”
- You may identify other platforms in your profile. Twitch also says creators may use tools that combine activity from other platforms, such as chat, for personal use; a combined-chat tool is not, by itself, a violation of the simulcasting rules.
- Twitch says it may issue a warning before enforcement. That is not a guarantee that a particular situation will receive only a warning.
Troubleshoot a simulcast
One platform does not receive video
Check that the destination is enabled in the encoder or relay, and verify its stream URL and key if the tool requires them. Confirm that the YouTube event or Twitch destination is the one you intended to use. If you changed or reset a key, update the corresponding encoder entry.
Video stutters or the stream health degrades
Check the encoder’s stream-health information and your available upload capacity. The combined demand can be higher when your setup sends separate outputs. Reduce the output settings to a level your connection can sustain, or reassess whether your routing method is creating multiple outbound feeds. YouTube recommends monitoring during the stream in its streaming tips.

Viewers hear no sound or see the wrong source
Inspect the encoder’s audio and video sources, then run another test with the same game, microphone, and scene arrangement you plan to use live. Verify both platform outputs independently; a correct preview on one service does not establish that the other output is correct.
YouTube Live is unavailable
Check channel verification and live-streaming eligibility, including whether the channel has had a restriction in the prior 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow at least 24 hours as YouTube advises. See YouTube’s getting-started page.

Or let it run in the cloud
For a different use case—keeping an uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube channel stream—StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud rather than from a computer at home. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not send a live camera feed or simulcast to Twitch. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live.
