Check the selected mode first: the other modes use different attempt limits or solving rules.
Know which Quordle mode you’re playing
The attempt budget in this guide applies to Classic. Quordle also offers modes with different constraints, so the same strategy and turn count do not apply everywhere.

How guesses and colored clues work
In Quordle, a submitted word is played across the unsolved boards. Each board returns its own colored feedback, and the on-screen keyboard tracks letter status across the game. A clue on one board is not automatically a clue on the others.

- Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct position.
- Yellow: The letter is in the word but in a different position.
- Gray: The letter is absent from that board’s word.
Those meanings are described in the Quordle.uk rules explainer. In particular, a gray tile on one board does not rule that letter out on another.
A turn-by-turn strategy for Classic
1. Use early guesses to gather broad information
Because an early guess can return clues on several boards, choose a valid word with useful, distinct letters rather than making a narrow speculative play for just one board. The aim is to learn which letters may matter across the puzzle; this is a practical inference from the shared-guess mechanic, not a guaranteed or measured optimal strategy.

2. Track clues separately for each board
After each guess, note the green positions, the yellow letters and the positions those yellow letters cannot occupy, and the letters marked gray on that board. The keyboard is a tracking aid, but interpret its status in the context of the individual board.
3. Narrow each board’s possible answers
For every board, keep candidate words that match all confirmed green positions, include every known yellow letter in a permitted position, and exclude letters marked absent there. Recheck these constraints after every turn. Do not transfer a board’s absent-letter list to the other boards.

4. Shift from discovery to solving
When a board has only a small number of plausible answers, favor guesses that can complete it or distinguish between its remaining candidates. If one word can both advance that board and test useful letters on other unsolved boards, it may serve both purposes. The balance depends on the clues you have, not a published benchmark.
5. Spend the remaining guesses deliberately
Keep count of the shared turns left. With the nine-guess Classic limit, a low-information probe becomes harder to justify as the end approaches. Prefer a guess that can solve a tightly constrained board over one that only tests a few speculative letters.

Choose between information and direct progress
Two questions help evaluate a guess: how much information could it reveal across unsolved boards, and how much could it advance or finish a likely answer? Early in a game, breadth can be valuable because one guess produces feedback on multiple boards. Later, direct progress matters more when you have a plausible answer to complete or a small candidate set to separate. This is a strategy framework derived from the game’s shared guesses, not a published comparison of Quordle tactics.
What the evidence does—and doesn’t—establish
The available sources document the rules and support the strategy deductions above, but they do not establish a Quordle-specific best starting word, average solve rate, or guaranteed win rate. A 2023 paper on optimal strategies for Wordle and general guessing games is not an evaluation of Quordle, so its results should not be presented as Quordle performance data: IJCAI 2023 paper.
