YouTube’s documented playlist controls let you move videos manually; they do not provide a documented automatic newest-first or oldest-first date sort for an existing playlist. To change the order, drag entries into place on desktop or use the reorder handle in the Android app. If a playlist contains only Shorts, YouTube says reordering is unavailable.
What sorting a playlist can—and can’t—do
Sorting by upload date would automatically arrange entries from newest to oldest or oldest to newest. YouTube’s current help documents manual reordering instead: you choose where each entry goes. A YouTube Help Community Product Expert also says there is no automatic date-order option, but that is community guidance rather than a formal product specification.
Playlist order is separate from the order used to browse a creator’s videos or search results. Channel or search filters may help you find videos, but they do not automatically reorder an existing playlist.
Reorder a playlist on desktop
- Open the playlist on YouTube.
- Click and hold near the video’s or Short’s thumbnail.
- Drag the entry up or down to the position you want, then release it.

Reorder a playlist on Android
- Open the playlist in the YouTube app.
- Press and hold the two-line handle beside the video or Short.
- Drag the entry up or down to its new position.
YouTube says reordering is unavailable for playlists containing only Shorts. Check the Edit playlists – Android help page for the current steps.
What YouTube Studio can do
YouTube Studio provides playlist creation and management controls, including drag-and-drop ordering. Its computer instructions do not establish an automatic upload-date sort for an existing playlist. For the documented controls, see Manage playlists in YouTube Studio – Computer.

Why “Sort By” search filters don’t solve this
YouTube’s January 8, 2026 TeamYouTube announcement says the search-filter menu label “Sort By” was renamed to “Prioritize.” That announcement concerns YouTube search, not the order of videos inside an existing playlist. Search filters and playlist ordering are separate controls.
If you need a chronological playlist, locate the videos in the desired order and manually move them into that sequence. A YouTube Help Community thread, “Date ordering of videos,” discusses the same request; its Product Expert response is community advice, not a guarantee about current interface behavior.
