How the audio routing and recording tracks fit together
Voicemeeter Banana routes audio; OBS records it. Banana has hardware and virtual input strips and five buses, including physical A buses and virtual B1/B2 buses. OBS captures the virtual outputs associated with those buses as audio sources, then places each captured source on one or more recording tracks.
A bus combines everything routed to it. If game audio and chat audio both go to B1, OBS receives one combined mix from B1—not two independently editable sources. Plan the routing before assigning OBS tracks, and use different buses for sources that must remain separate.
Device labels can vary with driver generation. Check the names shown in your own Windows and OBS device lists rather than assuming every installation uses identical wording. Plan which sounds need their own track
Make a short source list before changing settings. For a gaming recording, for example, you might keep microphone, game, and voice chat separate so you can adjust their levels independently in an editor. Give the sources meaningful names in both Banana and OBS. A practical plan might be:

This is an example, not a required universal map. If the sources you need outnumber the independent mixes you have configured, revise the routing plan; multiple inputs sent to one bus will be mixed together. Route the sources through Voicemeeter Banana
- Open Banana and identify each input strip. Select the relevant physical or virtual input for each source, such as your microphone or an application’s audio. The exact Windows device names depend on your system.
- Choose a separate virtual bus for every source you need to isolate. On each strip, use its bus controls to send that source to the intended virtual output, such as B1 or B2. Do not send two sources to the same bus if you need them to arrive in OBS separately.
- Build a complete mix if you need one. Decide which sources should be heard together on the compatibility mix. Keep this mix distinct from the individual mixes where your routing allows it.
- Check the output-device names in Windows. Note which installed Voicemeeter playback or virtual-output device corresponds to each bus. Driver generations can use different labels, so use the names actually displayed on your PC.
Add the Voicemeeter outputs as OBS sources
- In OBS, open the scene where you record and select Sources → + → Audio Input Capture.
- Create a clearly named source for the first routed mix, such as “Microphone — B1.” In its device list, choose the Voicemeeter virtual output corresponding to that bus. Depending on the selected route and installed driver naming, B1 may appear as Voicemeeter Output and B2 as Voicemeeter AUX Output; check your own list.
- Add a separate Audio Input Capture source for each other independent output you intend to record, selecting the matching device for each.
- Watch the OBS Audio Mixer while audio is playing. Confirm that each source’s meter responds to the expected audio and that separate sources are not carrying the same combined signal. If a source is silent or duplicated, recheck Banana’s bus buttons and OBS’s selected device.
Assign OBS sources to recording tracks
- In OBS’s Audio Mixer, open Advanced Audio Properties using the mixer’s gear icon or the Edit menu.
- For each audio source, tick the checkbox for the track that should contain it. Put each isolated source on its own track. Also assign the sources that make up your full mix to track 1.
- Open Settings → Output and enable every track you assigned for recording. Source-to-track checkboxes alone are not enough if the corresponding output tracks are disabled.
- Make a short test recording, then open it in the editor you intend to use. Check that each track contains the expected source and that track 1 plays as a usable complete mix.
OBS’s Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide, published July 14, 2023, notes that “all standard video players will only play back one audio track at a time”. Separate tracks are mainly useful when you will edit the recording; they do not automatically create a ready-to-publish mix. A complete track 1 helps when the file will be played in a standard video player or published without editing.
When OBS can capture applications without Banana
If your goal is simply to separate supported applications, OBS Application Audio Capture may be enough without a central mixer. OBS documents support on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. Add an Application Audio Capture source and select the application you want OBS to capture. The exact source availability and behavior depend on the application and Windows setup.

OBS warns that some application audio may not work with this capture method. Its documented fallback is to route the application through a virtual cable, then add the cable output to OBS as an Audio Input Capture source. If you use application capture, disable global Desktop Audio when it would capture the same signal again; otherwise the recording may contain duplicated audio or echo. Common problems and what to check
- Two tracks contain the same audio: The sources may be routed to the same Banana bus, or OBS may capture a global desktop mix as well as an application or bus source. Give each isolated source a separate bus and disable duplicate Desktop Audio capture where appropriate.
- A track is missing from the recording: Check both layers of OBS configuration: the source’s track checkbox in Advanced Audio Properties and the track’s enabled state under Settings → Output.
- A Voicemeeter source is silent: Confirm that the input strip is receiving audio, its bus control is enabled, and OBS is capturing the output device that corresponds to that bus. Device naming depends on the installed driver generation.
- The exported file seems to play only one mix: Many standard video players play only one audio track at a time. Open the file in an editor that supports selecting multiple audio tracks, or use the complete mix on track 1 for ordinary playback.
- An application is not captured by OBS Application Audio Capture: Confirm that Windows meets the documented requirement, then use OBS’s virtual-cable fallback if the application remains incompatible.
- You hear echo or doubled audio: Look for the same application reaching OBS through both Desktop Audio and a dedicated capture source, or through multiple routed buses. Disable or correct the duplicate path.
