There is no YouTube Creator Music revenue-sharing formula for livestreams. To use a rights holder’s music in a monetized YouTube livestream, negotiate a direct written agreement with the people or companies that control the necessary rights—or use music you have separately cleared or leave the track out. Agree on the revenue base, covered uses, accounting, and Content ID handling; do not treat Creator Music’s long-form examples as a livestream rate.
Can I use Creator Music revenue sharing on a livestream?
No. YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ says the program does not support licensing for live content. Its usage details distinguish eligible long-form videos from livestreams and Shorts. Creator Music’s licensing and revenue-sharing terms therefore are not a way to clear a song for a live broadcast.
YouTube’s examples involving adjustments to the standard 55% share concern eligible long-form Creator Music videos and rights-clearance adjustments. YouTube says those adjustments do not apply to livestreams. They are not a default, recommended, or legally appropriate split for a live broadcast.
Who has to clear the music?
The person providing the live content is responsible under YouTube’s livestream terms for having the necessary rights. Those terms specifically include music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers—including public performance rights—and other royalty participants. A YouTube monetization setting, an agreement with just one participant, or a private revenue split does not by itself establish that every required right has been cleared.

For a song in a gaming stream, identify the rights in both the composition and the particular sound recording. Depending on the track and arrangement of rights, more than one party may need to authorize use. Confirm which rights each proposed licensor controls and whether any additional consent is required for the territories and uses you intend.
Choose a clearance route before setting the split
| Route | What it can cover | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Direct permission under a negotiated split or fee | The precise rights and uses stated in the agreement, if the signing party controls them or has authority to grant them | Requires negotiation, documentation, and a clear plan for any other rights holders and claims |
| Music whose rights you have independently secured | Only the rights and uses included in your license or other permission | Check that permission expressly covers live transmission, monetization, territories, and any replay or clips you plan to publish |
| Omit the track | No use of that track in the stream or related content | Avoids negotiating for that track, but does not make other uncleared music in the broadcast safe to use |
Creator Music is not a fourth live-use route: its documented licensing and revenue-sharing features do not support livestreams.

How to negotiate and document the split
YouTube does not prescribe a universal percentage for a direct livestream deal. The share is a business term for the parties to negotiate, based on the rights being granted and the deal they can reach. A percentage without a defined revenue base is ambiguous, so settle the accounting rules as well as the number.
- Identify the parties and rights. Name each party, the specific composition and recording, and the rights each party controls or is authorized to license. Confirm who else must consent.
- Describe the covered use. State that permission covers the YouTube livestream and whether it includes monetization. Separately specify whether it covers an archived replay, clips, promotional excerpts, or other versions. Define the territories and term.
- Define the revenue pool. Say which income is included—for example, income attributable to the live stream, its replay, or both—and identify the reporting source. State how refunds, taxes, platform adjustments, and any other agreed deductions are treated. Do not rely on the undefined word “revenue.”
- Set the payment method. Write the agreed percentage or fixed fee, explain whether it applies before or after the listed deductions, set the reporting period and payment deadline, and specify what detail statements must show.
- Allocate across music and participants. Explain how the defined pool is allocated if the stream uses multiple tracks or several rights holders have interests. Specify whether each receives an agreed portion of the pool or is paid under a separate license; do not assume YouTube will calculate the parties’ private contractual split.
- Agree on corrections and disputes. Include a process for correcting statements, raising questions, and auditing or verifying calculations, with notice contacts and deadlines.
- Plan for claims and interruptions. State how the parties will respond to a Content ID claim, a block, demonetization, removal, or a change in the rights holder’s policy, and who will contact YouTube or the other parties.
Keep the private agreement separate from Content ID
A negotiated contract sets what the parties owe each other; it does not control YouTube’s separate rights-management process. YouTube says revenue otherwise due to a creator for content claimed through Content ID may instead be payable to claimants. When there is more than one claiming party, YouTube says it may divide those revenues pro rata as it determines. A claim or platform action can therefore affect actual receipts independently of the private agreement.

Do not assume that a private split will automatically prevent a claim, release claimed revenue, or override a block or monetization decision. Include a practical claim-response process in the agreement and keep written evidence of the licenses and permissions. If the planned use changes—for example, you add an archived replay or promotional clip—confirm that the written grant covers it before publishing that version.
A practical workflow for a gaming livestream
- Inventory the music. List each track and recording you intend to play, including background music in a game or other source, and identify the relevant composition and recording rights.
- Confirm authority and scope. Ask each proposed rights holder what rights it controls, which territories it can license, and whether its permission covers the live broadcast, monetization, and any replay or clips you want.
- Negotiate the economics and reporting. Agree on a percentage or fee, define the revenue pool and deductions, and set statement, payment, allocation, and correction terms.
- Sign and retain the agreement before going live with the music. Make sure it names the tracks and permitted uses, identifies the parties, and addresses claims and takedowns.
- Monitor the stream and account records. Keep copies of relevant notices, claims, reports, statements, and payments. If a claim or block occurs, follow the agreed notice process; do not treat the contract alone as proof that YouTube has cleared the claim.
If you cannot verify the rights chain or get permission for the exact use, choose separately cleared music or omit the track. Contract enforceability and the rights required can depend on the particular parties, territories, and applicable law, so have the proposed agreement reviewed by a qualified lawyer for the relevant jurisdictions.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your YouTube channel uses uploaded video in a 24/7 loop, StreamNeo can keep that video playing from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. It does not clear music rights, so any music in the upload still needs suitable permission for its live and replay uses.
