There is no visual tell or AI-detector score that can reliably prove a video is real or fake on its own. To assess a suspicious clip, preserve the original, trace where it came from and how it was handled, check the surrounding context, and corroborate its important claims independently. Treat visual anomalies and automated results as leads—not verdicts.
What it means to verify a video
Verification involves two related but separate questions: whether some or all of a video is synthetic or manipulated, and whether it is being used deceptively. Synthetic media can have legitimate uses; conversely, a genuine clip can be presented with misleading context. A compressed, copied, or low-quality file is not automatically fake.
NIST’s Examining Digital Media guide says that when media is claimed to be a deepfake, it should be authenticated to determine whether it is synthetic in whole or in part, and that its provenance should be determined during authentication. Provenance means the media’s history: how it was captured, supplied, edited, enhanced, copied, compressed, and stored.
For a game trailer, esports clip, or gameplay video, that means asking not only whether a face, voice, or scene looks unusual, but who published the clip, whether it is an original or a repost, what happened before and after the excerpt, and whether independent evidence supports the claim attached to it.

A practical workflow for checking a suspicious video
- Preserve what you received. Keep the original file where possible. Record when and where you received it and who supplied it. Avoid repeatedly exporting or re-encoding it. If the matter could affect safety, employment, a legal case, or a public accusation, preserve relevant metadata and document who handled the file and when. Metadata can contribute to provenance; it does not, by itself, prove authenticity.
- Trace the source and history. Find out who first published or supplied the video, what device captured it, and whether editing, enhancement, copying, compression, or storage steps are known. Distinguish the original from later platform copies or excerpts.
- Check whether the clip provides enough context. Look for a longer version or surrounding footage. A short excerpt may omit what happened before or after the moment shown. Identify the specific claim the clip is being used to support rather than treating the clip as proof of every claim made about it.
- Corroborate material claims independently. Compare the claim with independent records or reporting, rather than relying on reposts that may all trace back to the same clip. For a claimed event, consider whether other available records support the time, place, participants, or sequence of events.
- Note anomalies, but do not call them proof. In attended remote identity proofing, NIST names high latency, synchronization problems, and inconsistencies in skin tone or resolution as examples reviewers should be trained to notice. These are possible leads in that context, not a universal checklist for every video or conclusive signs of a deepfake.
- Escalate consequential uncertainty. If a decision could seriously affect someone, use multiple lines of evidence and consult a qualified examiner. Ask what media conditions were tested, what the method can and cannot establish, and what uncertainty remains. Do not treat a detector score as an authentication certificate.
How much weight to give common verification signals
| Signal or method | What it may help with | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Source and provenance history | Shows how the file was supplied and what capture, editing, copying, or compression steps are known. | A documented history does not automatically prove that the content is truthful; an incomplete history does not automatically prove the video is false. |
| Context and independent corroboration | Tests whether the clip is long enough to understand the event and whether its material claims fit other evidence. | A matching repost is not independent corroboration if it derives from the same source. |
| Visible or synchronization anomalies | Can give a reviewer a reason to inspect a clip more closely. NIST identifies latency, synchronization, skin-tone, and resolution inconsistencies in attended remote identity proofing. | They are not a foolproof general-purpose visual test and do not prove manipulation by themselves. |
| Automated detector result | May contribute one piece of evidence for the particular task and conditions the system was evaluated to handle. | It does not certify authenticity. Performance may change with compression, blur, resizing, or other post-processing. |
| Content Credentials or other provenance information | When present and intact, digitally signed history information, invisible watermarking, or digital fingerprinting may provide useful provenance signals or help locate associated credentials. | An uncredentialed video is not therefore false, and provenance information alone does not settle whether the depicted content is truthful. |
Can AI detectors reliably identify deepfakes?
Not as a universal yes-or-no test. “AI detector” can refer to different tasks: identifying synthetic generation, detecting face swaps or other manipulation, establishing provenance, or locating edited portions. NIST’s Open Media Forensics Challenge defines video deepfake detection as distinguishing manipulated videos from high-provenance original videos or clips. When assessing a tool, ask which of these tasks it actually addresses.
Test conditions matter. NIST’s Guardians of Forensic Evidence program emphasizes generalization and resilience to post-processing such as Gaussian blur and video compression. Clean benchmark results should not be assumed to transfer unchanged to a social-media copy, resized upload, or surveillance recording.

NIST’s GenAI: Deepfakes 2026 page reports 45–50% performance degradation when moving from academic evaluation to operational deployment. That is a result reported by the NIST program page, not a universal estimate: the available page information does not specify the underlying study details, metric definition, or detector sample needed to apply that range to every system or video.
How to evaluate a detector or verification service
- Task fit: Ask whether it detects synthetic generation, face swaps, other manipulations, provenance, or edited regions. Do not assume a broad “AI detector” label means it handles all of them.
- Realistic test media: Check whether evaluation included both genuine and manipulated videos under conditions relevant to your use, including compression, blur, resizing, or platform re-encoding.
- Documented errors: Look for false-positive and false-negative rates for the intended workflow, not just a headline accuracy score. NIST calls for testing with genuine and attack media, baseline performance, and expected error rates in its identity-proofing guidance.
- Human review: Confirm that a trained person can review uncertain results and that the workflow has an escalation path. NIST SP 800-63A Revision 4 says, within its identity-proofing scope, “Algorithmic analysis of media and automated decisioning SHOULD be augmented by manual reviews to address detection errors.”
- Operational fit: Check whether the process can preserve the source file and provenance, work with your capture and intake controls, and explain uncertainty to the people making the decision.
How organizations can reduce the risk of accepting or spreading deceptive video
Prevention starts with capture and intake, not just a detector. NIST SP 800-63A Revision 4 sets requirements for covered identity-proofing services and workflows; organizations in other fields should adapt the ideas to their own threat model rather than assume the standard automatically governs them.

- Define how video is captured, supplied, stored, and transferred; use authenticated channels where appropriate.
- Preserve the source file and document known editing and handling history.
- Test analysis systems on genuine and attack media that resemble actual use, and record expected false-positive and false-negative rates.
- Give reviewers training and an escalation route for uncertain or consequential cases.
- Where appropriate to the workflow, consider capture-sensor authentication or device attestation as part of the controls—not as a substitute for examining context and claims.
Content Credentials describes a provenance approach that can include digitally signed history information, invisible watermarking, and digital fingerprinting to help locate associated credentials. These can be useful signals when present and intact. Their absence does not prove a video is false, and provenance metadata alone does not establish that the content itself is truthful.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Declaring a video fake from one visual quirk: Treat the quirk as a reason to investigate source, context, and corroboration.
- Trusting a detector’s single score: Ask what task and media conditions it was tested on, what errors it makes, and whether a human reviewer can assess the result.
- Assuming a repost confirms an original: Trace reposts back to their earliest available source and look for genuinely independent evidence.
- Treating compression or poor quality as proof of tampering: Record the file’s transformation history where possible; low quality can result from ordinary copying or platform processing.
- Sharing an unverified accusation: If the clip could harm someone, pause circulation while checking its provenance and claims. Label uncertainty clearly rather than presenting a suspicion as a finding.
