But YouTube’s help guidance only confirms automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; it does not promise a complete replay or uninterrupted operation for a 24-hour-plus session. Plan continuity, rights, and recordings separately from the act of going live.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An encoder: software or dedicated hardware that sends your audio and video to YouTube. YouTube supports both; a simple podcast does not automatically require a hardware encoder. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- A microphone and a visual feed. For an audio-led show, that could be a static image or other visual you have the right to use.
- A stable internet connection with enough measured upload capacity for your chosen settings, plus a person or plan for monitoring and recovery.
- Permission for the music, recordings, performances, and other material you transmit, including any replay or monetized use you intend.
Set up the YouTube encoder stream
- Confirm eligibility. In YouTube Studio, check that live streaming is available on your verified channel and that there are no live-stream restrictions from the prior 90 days. If the channel is not eligible, resolve that before planning a launch.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one, then set its title, description, visibility, and other metadata. Scheduling creates a watch page you can share in advance. The exact screens can change; follow the current Live Control Room prompts.
- Copy the ingest details into your encoder. In Live Control Room, retrieve the stream URL (server URL) and stream key, then enter them in the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMPS destination fields. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not post it or include it in public screenshots.
- Configure the audio and visuals. Select the intended microphone or audio source, add the visual feed, and make sure the encoder is sending the correct scene or program. For a prerecorded playlist, confirm you have the right to use every included track and recording before adding it.
- Start the encoder feed and inspect preview. Start streaming from the encoder first. Wait for the Live Control Room preview, then check picture, audio level, sync, and stream health. Start the public broadcast from Live Control Room when the preview is correct. Verify the public watch page on a separate device, such as a phone.
- Monitor after launch. Keep an eye on stream health, audio and video, and the watch page. Decide in advance who will respond if the encoder, computer, internet connection, or power fails, and how they will restart the feed and verify that viewers can see and hear it.
Choose stream settings for your connection
Use settings your upload connection can sustain, not settings chosen from download speed. YouTube recommends a reliable connection and at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate; its guidance warns that a connectivity disruption could break the stream. Test from the location and network you will actually use, including the full audio and video setup. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
For standard SDR streaming over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. Its published H.264 examples list 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a requirement to use those resolutions: an audio-led podcast with a still image may not benefit from a high-resolution feed. Choose a resolution and bitrate appropriate for the visuals and your measured upload capacity. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution table for the full values.
HLS is another ingest option, but it requires an HLS-capable encoder and specific segment and playlist settings; YouTube says it has higher latency than RTMP. For a straightforward podcast stream, RTMPS is the simpler default when your encoder supports it. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.

Plan a 24/7 schedule without relying on an unpromised archive
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that a continuous stream lasting longer than 12 hours will produce a complete replay, nor does it establish how every account or region handles such a stream. Do not promise listeners that a day-long broadcast will be available afterward as one replay.
A cautious operating plan is to break programming into shorter, separately scheduled sessions and keep an independent local recording if you need a reliable copy. Test the current Studio archive behavior with a noncritical stream before depending on it, and check that the local recording file is actually growing. YouTube’s guidance recommends verifying local archive files; shorter sessions and separate recording are practical precautions, not guarantees about platform behavior.

Build a continuity plan
- Test the encoder, audio, visuals, and watch page before the public start.
- Measure upload speed during the hours you expect to broadcast and leave the recommended 20% headroom.
- Assign monitoring responsibility and document how to restart the encoder and confirm the stream is live again.
- Test any backup network or failover arrangement rather than assuming it will work.
- Consider a UPS for the computer and network equipment if power interruptions are a concern. YouTube does not require one or specify a size; choose based on your equipment load and desired runtime.
Check music and other rights before streaming in India
YouTube’s livestream terms require compliance with Community Guidelines and applicable law, and put responsibility on the content provider to have necessary rights for worldwide use on Google services, including music licensing rights. See YouTube’s terms.
India’s Copyright Act defines communication to the public broadly and treats musical works, sound recordings, and performances as distinct parts of the statutory scheme. Section 52(1)(za) includes an exception for certain performances or communications in the course of a bona fide religious ceremony. That wording does not establish that a devotional podcast, continuous online radio-style channel, or recorded bhajan broadcast outside a ceremony automatically qualifies. The Act is available at India’s Copyright Act, 1957; the statutory wording is not a determination of how it applies to a particular stream.

Before including a track, establish permission for the underlying composition and lyrics, the particular sound recording, and any performer contribution. Keep written permissions and check that they cover online livestreaming, relevant territories, duration, monetization if applicable, and replay or archive. This is practical rights diligence, not legal advice. Religious subject matter by itself is not proof that a recording is cleared.
Choose how to keep the broadcast running
A local software encoder gives you control over audio sources, scenes, and production, but the computer, power, network, and encoder process must remain available and monitored. Dedicated hardware is another encoder option, particularly for more complex production; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but it is not mandatory for a basic podcast. Neither approach by itself establishes guaranteed 24/7 continuity.

Troubleshooting common launch problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is unavailable in Studio | The channel may not be verified or may have a live-stream restriction within the prior 90 days. | Check channel verification and Studio eligibility notices before the scheduled launch. |
| No encoder preview appears | The encoder may be using the wrong stream URL or key, or it may not be sending a compatible feed. | Recheck the URL and key in Live Control Room and encoder settings; restart the encoder feed and wait for preview. |
| Stream health is poor or the feed drops | Upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable, or the configured bitrate may be too high for the connection. | Measure upload speed on the broadcast network, keep the recommended 20% headroom, lower bitrate or resolution, and retest. Have a restart procedure. |
| Viewers cannot hear the podcast | The wrong encoder input may be selected, muted, or set too low. | Check the encoder’s selected audio source and meters, then verify sound in the preview and on the public watch page from another device. |
| The stream ends or a replay is missing after a long session | YouTube’s cited automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed complete archive for longer broadcasts. | Use shorter planned sessions when a replay matters, retain an independent local recording, and verify the current archive behavior in a test. |
| A music segment is blocked or claimed | The rights holder or platform may not permit that recording or use; devotional context alone does not establish permission. | Review the specific composition, recording, and performance permissions, and remove or replace material you cannot clear. |
