On the original Nintendo Switch edition, start The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom with a different user profile on the console. Nintendo stores save data separately for each user in general, so the new profile can have its own progress without changing the save on your main profile. On the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Nintendo documents a second manual-save file for another adventure. Check your edition before choosing a method.
Choose the right method for your edition

Start a new save on the original Switch edition
- Return to the HOME Menu. Confirm that you are using the original Switch edition, rather than the Switch 2 Edition.
- Select a different user profile before launching the game. If no second user exists, create one in the console’s system settings; menu labels may vary slightly by system software version and region.
- Launch Tears of the Kingdom as that user. Check the user icon on the game’s launch screen before continuing.
- Begin the new adventure under that profile. Save data is associated with the console user, not the game card.
The key safeguard is choosing the other console user before starting the game. A separate profile is the straightforward way to keep a new run isolated on the original edition.
Use the second manual-save file on Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo describes the Switch 2 Edition as having two save files, allowing a player to start a new adventure or continue the previous one with existing save data. Its official feature page states in Spanish: “Con dos archivos de guardado, podrás comenzar una nueva aventura o continuar la anterior con tus datos de guardado existentes.” This means, in English translation, “With two save files, you can start a new adventure or continue the previous one with your existing save data.” The page’s quoted wording is Spanish, not Nintendo’s English wording.
Use the second manual-save-file option within the Switch 2 Edition for this same-user route. Do not assume that the feature is available in the original Switch edition. Nintendo also says the second Switch 2 Edition save cannot be transferred to the original Switch edition.

Why cloud saves and transfers are not extra save slots
Save Data Cloud
Save Data Cloud requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says each game has one cloud backup file, and downloading it replaces the existing save data for that game on the console. Nintendo warns that overwritten data cannot be recovered. For the download process and warning, see Nintendo’s cloud-backup instructions.
Transfer between consoles
Nintendo supports nearby save-data transfer without a Nintendo Switch Online membership, but it moves save data from the source system to the target; it is not a way to make a second local copy. Nintendo warns that playing on multiple consoles before downloading the latest cloud backup can leave divergent saves. Choosing which version to overwrite can permanently discard the other progress. Review Nintendo’s save-data transfer instructions before moving a save.

MicroSD cards and same-console copies
Nintendo’s data-management guidance says Switch save data cannot be stored or moved using a microSD card and cannot be copied on the same console. A microSD card therefore is not a save-duplication or backup workaround.
