To start a podcast on YouTube, create a public podcast playlist for your show and put its full video episodes in that playlist. YouTube treats the show as a playlist and each episode as a video—not as an MP3 file. After setup, use podcast analytics and each episode’s Reach report to see how people find and watch your show, then use those observations to refine your titles, descriptions, episode order, and promotion. Podcast features can create additional discovery opportunities, but they do not guarantee more viewers.
What a YouTube podcast is
A YouTube podcast is a show represented by a playlist, with each episode represented by a video in that playlist. An audio file such as an MP3 cannot, by itself, be turned into a YouTube podcast episode. For an audio-first show, you still need video episodes on YouTube; YouTube also documents RSS as a distribution route for podcasts.
You can set up a new podcast in YouTube Studio or designate an existing playlist as a podcast. The right route depends mainly on whether you already have a playlist of full episodes and whether its contents, ownership, order, and metadata are ready to serve as the show.
Choose how to set up the show

Create a podcast in YouTube Studio
- Open the podcast creation flow. In YouTube Studio, choose Create > New podcast. If your full episodes are already collected in a suitable playlist, use the option to set an existing playlist as a podcast instead.
- Enter the show details. Use the actual show name as the title and write a detailed description that tells viewers what the show covers. Set the podcast visibility to public if you want it available for discovery.
- Add a square thumbnail. Upload a square image representing the show. Use artwork that clearly identifies the podcast rather than a generic episode image.
- Add episode videos. Upload new episode videos or add existing videos to the podcast playlist. An MP3 alone is not an episode in YouTube’s podcast setup.
- Check the playlist before publishing or relying on it. Confirm that it contains the full episodes for this show, in the intended listening order, and that its metadata identifies the show clearly.

Organize episodes for people and discovery
Keep one podcast playlist per show
Use one public podcast playlist for each show, with the show name and a detailed description. Keep all seasons of the same show together rather than creating a separate podcast playlist for every season. A playlist should contain the full episodes of that show—not clips, unrelated uploads, or another creator’s videos.

Choose an order that matches the format
For an episodic show, where listeners can start with any installment, YouTube’s creation guidance generally recommends putting the newest episode first. For a serial show whose story or discussion should be followed from the beginning, put the oldest episode first. The important point is to choose an order that matches how a listener should consume the show.
Separate clips from full episodes
Put highlights, Shorts, trailers, and other supporting material in separate playlists. This keeps the podcast playlist useful to someone who wants to listen through the actual show and avoids mixing different kinds of content into its episode sequence. YouTube says Shorts made to support a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music.

How YouTube may help people discover a podcast
Eligible podcast content may receive podcast badges on Watch and Playlist pages, appear in YouTube Music, get a spotlight on youtube.com/podcasts, and benefit from Watch-page discovery, recommendations to listeners with similar interests, and improved search features. These are possible discovery surfaces, not guaranteed placement or an audience-growth promise.

Eligibility matters. Some playlists may not qualify even when marked as podcasts, including playlists containing content the creator does not own. A correctly labeled podcast is therefore not a guarantee that every feature will appear or that a particular number of viewers will find the show. YouTube documents two routes for an audio-first show: create and manage podcast content through Studio, or connect an RSS feed. The practical choice depends on what you already have.

Regardless of route, monetized uploads remain subject to YouTube’s monetization policies. Sponsored or endorsed content may require disclosure to viewers.
Use analytics to make evidence-based improvements
There is no reliable setup switch that guarantees more viewers. Instead, measure what is happening on your own show and use those observations to decide what to adjust.
- Review podcast analytics in YouTube Studio. The podcast view can include views, watch time, traffic sources, audience demographics, retention, and revenue data.
- Open an episode’s Reach report. The video Reach report explains how viewers found that video, including external sites and apps and videos that suggested it. It also surfaces metrics such as click-through rate, views, and watch time.
- Look for patterns across episodes and time. Compare traffic sources and retention rather than treating one episode’s result as a universal rule. Check whether viewers arrive through search, recommendations, external sharing, or another source, and where they continue watching or leave.
- Make a focused change and observe the result. Use what the reports show to guide refinements to episode packaging and promotion. For example, if discovery sources differ between episodes, consider whether the title and description accurately communicate each episode’s subject. Treat this as an informed experiment, not proof that a single edit caused a change.

Keep the show rights-safe and policy-aware
- Use content you own or have permission to use in the podcast playlist. YouTube notes that content not owned by the creator can affect podcast eligibility.
- Do not assume that marking a playlist as a podcast makes its episodes eligible for every podcast feature.
- If uploads are monetized, follow YouTube monetization policies. Disclose sponsored or endorsed content to viewers when required.
- Keep supporting Shorts and clips organized separately; Shorts made to support a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music.
