Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYou can start a prerecorded gaming replay when Ubuntu boots by running its encoder as an enabled systemd service. The service starts the encoder; the encoder must be configured to send the replay to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Replay looping, YouTube’s event auto-start, and recovery after a network interruption are separate behaviors that you must configure and test.
What you need before automating the stream
- An Ubuntu computer that can access the replay file and run your chosen encoder.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says channels must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A YouTube Live encoder stream or scheduled event, with its stream URL and key available in Live Control Room.
- A replay, including gameplay, music, overlays, and other material that you are authorized to broadcast. YouTube requires compliance with its Community Guidelines and Terms; rights for a particular game or soundtrack depend on the material and applicable permissions.
Keep the stream key private: it authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
Prepare the YouTube event and encoder
1. Create or schedule the event
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create an encoder stream or schedule a livestream. Copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this connection.
2. Set the encoder’s output
Use an encoder that can read your replay, send a continuous feed if you want a loop, and transmit to YouTube over RTMPS or RTMP. YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard encoder ingest. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Check the settings and syntax for the encoder version you actually install.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends these H.264 ingest bitrates:
| Output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that your encoder or internet connection can sustain them. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, so choose a bitrate your measured upload capacity can support with room to spare. Its streaming tips explain bandwidth and stream-health checks.

Run the encoder as a service at Ubuntu boot
1. Decide what the service should run
First configure and test the encoder outside of systemd. Its command or configuration must specify the replay file, YouTube destination and key, and any loop behavior you want. Use the encoder’s documentation for exact options: the settings above are YouTube guidance, not a verified FFmpeg or OBS command. Do not assume that a service automatically loops a file or reconnects after a network failure.
2. Create a system service
Create a unit file under /etc/systemd/system/, for example /etc/systemd/system/youtube-replay.service. Set the service user and working directory deliberately, and use absolute paths for the executable, replay, and configuration files. Put the encoder invocation in ExecStart=. A basic unit shape is:

Replace the example values and arguments with paths and options valid for your system and encoder. The example’s restart policy can restart a process that exits with failure; it does not prove the encoder will detect every dropped connection or resume the YouTube feed correctly. Test those cases separately. Protect the unit and any referenced configuration containing a stream key from access by other users.
3. Enable it for boot and start it for a test
After saving the unit, run:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable youtube-replay.service
sudo systemctl start youtube-replay.service
sudo systemctl status youtube-replay.service
sudo journalctl -u youtube-replay.service -b
enable arranges for the service to be pulled in by its configured boot target; it does not start the service immediately. start launches it now. Ubuntu’s systemd unit documentation describes target dependencies, and its systemctl documentation covers service management and inspection.

Confirm YouTube actually goes live
A service running after Ubuntu boot is not proof that viewers can watch the stream. In Live Control Room, check that the incoming preview appears, inspect audio and video, and complete the event’s go-live action when required. YouTube’s scheduled encoder instructions tell operators to wait for preview and click Go live; event auto-start settings are separate from Ubuntu’s boot setting. Check the event’s current auto-start and auto-stop options rather than assuming that sending a feed will publish it automatically.
Also note the archive boundary: YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say an encoder stream under 12 hours is automatically archived after it ends. A continuously running Ubuntu service does not guarantee one uninterrupted archive or remove YouTube’s stream-duration behavior. Plan deliberate stream boundaries if an archive matters.

Test looping, interruption, and unattended operation
- Confirm the replay begins at the intended point, loops if configured to do so, and keeps audio and video in sync.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream health before relying on the setup. YouTube recommends preparing early, previewing and monitoring the feed, checking that a local archive file is growing when you record one, and confirming that the stream is accessible to viewers.
- Test what happens after an encoder exit, Ubuntu restart, and deliberate network interruption. Observe the service status and journal, then confirm whether the encoder reconnects and whether YouTube resumes the event as intended.
- Do not treat
Restart=on-failureas network recovery: it only governs what systemd does when the service process exits with a failure status. Encoder-specific reconnect behavior needs its own configuration and testing.
Troubleshoot common startup failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Service is inactive after reboot | Unit was not enabled, unit name differs, or systemd did not reload the unit. | Run systemctl is-enabled youtube-replay.service, confirm the unit filename, then run sudo systemctl daemon-reload and enable it again if needed. |
| Service starts and exits immediately | Bad executable path, invalid encoder arguments, inaccessible replay/configuration, or wrong service user. | Read systemctl status and journalctl -u youtube-replay.service -b; verify absolute paths and permissions, then run the encoder manually as the configured user. |
| Encoder runs but YouTube shows no preview | Incorrect server URL or stream key, unavailable network, or invalid ingest settings. | Check the Live Control Room values and encoder destination; keep the key private and reset it if exposed. Confirm the encoder reports a successful connection. |
| Preview appears but event is not public | The event may require an operator’s Go live action or have auto-start disabled. | Check the event’s Live Control Room controls and current auto-start setting; do not confuse event behavior with Ubuntu service startup. |
| Stream drops or fails to resume | Upload instability, encoder reconnect behavior, or a process that remains alive despite a disconnected feed. | Check stream health and logs, ensure bitrate leaves the recommended bandwidth headroom, and test the encoder’s recovery behavior during a controlled interruption. |
| Replay does not repeat | Looping is not configured in the encoder or its media input. | Use the installed encoder’s version-specific loop settings and verify playback locally; systemd only manages the process lifecycle. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain an Ubuntu service, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded recording or playlist looping to YouTube from the cloud. Upload the replay, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, with a one-free-day limit per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
