You can run a continuous YouTube Live feed from an AWS Lightsail instance in Mumbai by sending video from an encoder to YouTube’s ingest server. First confirm your channel is eligible, then configure a supported encoder, protect the stream key, and supervise the encoder so it starts at boot and recovers from failure. The key caveat is compute: AWS describes Lightsail instances as burstable and recommends EC2 for consistently high-CPU work such as video encoding, so validate the selected instance against your actual workload rather than assuming any bundle can encode continuously.
Before you create the instance
Confirm YouTube Live access
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio; a cloud server cannot bypass an account restriction. See YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
Decide what the server will encode
Choose the source and output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate before selecting a Lightsail plan. A pre-recorded loop and a live camera feed can impose different encoding loads; the exact CPU requirement depends on the source, encoder, and settings. AWS does not establish a Lightsail bundle as suitable for every sustained encoding workload. Its guidance describes Lightsail instances as burstable and recommends EC2 for consistently high CPU performance, including video encoding (AWS Lightsail instance documentation).
Get the YouTube ingest details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream you intend to run.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Keep the key private: it grants the ability to send video to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Use the RTMPS server address when your encoder supports it, and follow YouTube’s current recommendations for constant bitrate, supported video and audio formats, and keyframes (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Create a Lightsail instance in Mumbai
- In the AWS console, open Amazon Lightsail and create a Linux instance in the Mumbai region.
- Compare the current bundles’ vCPU, memory, storage, and transfer allowance with the encoder workload you plan to run. AWS plan capacities and prices can change; check the Mumbai options in your account before committing.
- Estimate outbound transfer for your chosen bitrate and planned uptime before choosing a plan. Mumbai-region plans include half the transfer allowance of plans in most other regions, and excess outbound transfer may incur charges. AWS explains regional allowances and transfer charges in its Lightsail pricing information.
- Configure network access narrowly. The stream is sent outbound, so it does not require an inbound streaming port. If you administer the server over SSH, allow port 22 only from your administrator IP range. Review IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules separately if IPv6 is enabled; Lightsail firewall rules are permissive allow rules, while outbound traffic is allowed (Lightsail firewall and port mapping documentation).
Estimate continuous-stream transfer
Approximate data sent by multiplying the encoded bitrate in megabits per second by the total streaming seconds, then dividing by eight to get megabytes; convert to gigabytes using the convention used by your plan. For example, at a constant 4 Mb/s for 30 days, the estimate is 4 × 2,592,000 ÷ 8 = 1,296,000 MB, or roughly 1,296 decimal GB before protocol overhead. This is an illustration, not a measured Lightsail bill. Add room for audio, protocol overhead, and reconnects, then compare the result with the current Mumbai allowance and check AWS’s excess-transfer terms.
Install and configure the encoder
Install an encoder appropriate to the source and target operating system, then configure it using YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. Prefer RTMPS where supported, use constant bitrate, choose supported video and audio formats, and set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends that interval and says it should not exceed four seconds (YouTube encoder settings). The appropriate resolution and bitrate depend on the stream, available CPU, and network transfer budget.

The exact installation commands and service configuration depend on the Linux image and encoder version. Do not copy a generic command or service unit without checking that it matches the target system. Put the stream key in a protected configuration location with access limited to the account running the encoder; do not place it in public scripts, shared logs, or shell history.
Make the stream restart and verify it
- Run the encoder under a service manager or supervisor configured to start it at boot and restart it after failure.
- Start the service and confirm that YouTube Live Control Room receives the feed. Check the video, audio, and stream health indicators rather than relying only on a running process.
- Test a controlled encoder restart and reconnect before relying on the setup. YouTube advises testing before streaming and checking stream health (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting and stream health).
- Monitor CPU use and network transfer over time. If the process repeatedly falls behind, disconnects, or exhausts the plan’s transfer allowance, reduce encoding demand or use compute and network capacity suited to sustained output.
“Always-on” describes the intended configuration, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. YouTube, the instance, network connectivity, and the encoder can all interrupt a feed. A repeated or continuous stream remains subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, and copyright rules; repetition does not exempt the content from enforcement (YouTube Community Guidelines).
