To start “In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow,” speak to the Eternal Fire priest outside Devil’s Pit in Velen. Enter the mine, follow Reinald’s trail and notes, defeat possessed Reinald and the Red Miasmal, then speak with Reinald’s spirit. The closing conversation determines the priest’s fate; completing the quest awards the basic Forgotten Wolven gear diagrams.
Where to start the quest
Travel to Devil’s Pit in Velen and speak with the Eternal Fire priest standing outside. The location is east of Mulbrydale. The priest gives Geralt the lead that starts the quest and directs him toward the mine.
What level should you be?
Published recommendations differ: VULKK’s 2022 guide recommends level 6, while TheSixthAxis’ 2022 walkthrough warns that the recommended level is 15. There is no single uncontested recommendation among these guides, so treat the mine’s later fights as potentially difficult if Geralt is underleveled.
How to progress through the mine
- Enter the mine at Devil’s Pit and follow the active quest markers as you explore.
- Read Reinald’s letters and the notes you find. They provide context for the trail and help make sense of the final conversation.
- Before the later encounters, consider preparing Reinald’s Philter. A walkthrough describes it as optional; it may be useful if Geralt is facing the fights at a lower level.
- Continue through the mine until you encounter possessed Reinald. Defeat him, then face the Red Miasmal.
- After the fight, speak with Reinald’s spirit to resolve the story and finish the quest.
How to get the priest’s more favorable outcome
The conclusion has multiple outcomes rather than one required ending. To give the priest a chance to survive and remain at Devil’s Pit, bring him into the final encounter and use the conciliatory dialogue. The walkthrough-supported route also depends on the conversation that comes before the final exchange: surface what Geralt learned in the mine, point out that one priest stayed behind to help, and explain that the deacon does not need the Church to do good. In this route, Reinald can forgive the priest, who stays at the pit.

The priest’s fate is therefore not decided by a single isolated reply. Your earlier dialogue choices and the discoveries you share affect how the final conversation plays out; other choices can end less favorably.
What the quest rewards
Completing the quest awards the basic Forgotten Wolven armor and weapon diagrams. Later upgrades are available through a separate scavenger hunt, not as part of these initial quest rewards.
