Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo start live streaming on YouTube, verify your channel, make sure it has no live-streaming restriction from the past 90 days, and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Then choose mobile, webcam, an encoder, or a supported console based on what you want to broadcast, and test the stream before going live.
Check whether your channel can stream
- Verify your channel. YouTube requires channel verification for live streaming.
- Check restrictions. Your channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- Meet the age requirement. YouTube’s current general guidance says streamers must be at least 16 years old.
- Enable live streaming early. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until the minute before an event. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
YouTube’s live-streaming policies can change, so check the current Help guidance if an eligibility requirement prevents you from starting.
Choose the right way to go live
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile app | Quick updates or vlogging from a phone or tablet | The cited mobile instructions require at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days, live streaming enabled, and a supported device. They list Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+; check YouTube’s current requirements before relying on them. |
| Webcam | A straightforward computer-based, face-to-camera broadcast | Use a computer with a webcam and microphone. YouTube describes this route as not requiring live-stream encoding software. Its cited instructions list Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+ as compatible. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, multiple cameras, or external audio gear | An encoder can be software or standalone hardware. It offers more production control but takes more setup and rehearsal. |
| Console | Broadcasting console gameplay directly | Supported modern consoles can stream directly. Follow the console maker’s instructions for the exact controls and setup. |
For a beginner, use whichever route matches the content and equipment already available. YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A webcam or external microphone can be an optional upgrade, not a requirement. See YouTube’s live-stream tips.
Go live from a phone or tablet
- Confirm that your channel meets YouTube’s mobile eligibility requirements, including the subscriber threshold and device requirements listed above.
- Open the YouTube app, tap Create, then choose Go live.
- Set your stream details and visibility, check the camera and microphone, and start the broadcast when ready.
YouTube’s mobile help page says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. If the option is missing, check channel eligibility and whether activation has finished. Follow YouTube’s current mobile live-stream instructions.

Go live with a webcam on a computer
- Sign in to YouTube on a compatible browser after enabling live streaming for the channel.
- Select Create → Go Live → Webcam.
- Enter a title and description, then choose the stream’s privacy setting.
- Select the camera and microphone you intend to use. Check that the preview shows the correct camera and that the audio meter responds when you speak.
- Choose Go Live when your framing, sound, and stream details are ready.
The webcam route is the simplest computer option if you want to appear on camera without configuring an encoder. See YouTube’s webcam setup instructions.
Use an encoder for gameplay or a produced show
An encoder is the better fit when you need to capture gameplay or a computer screen, add overlays, mix multiple audio sources, or connect external cameras and microphones. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream setup in Live Control Room and a stream key to connect the encoder to the broadcast.

- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule the stream and set its title, description, visibility, and other details.
- In the encoder’s YouTube or streaming settings, select YouTube and enter the stream key shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or show it on screen.
- Configure the encoder’s capture sources, audio, and layout, then start sending the stream to YouTube.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview, confirm that the intended audience can access the stream, and check both audio and video before starting the public broadcast.
Encoder settings depend on the encoder and broadcast setup; the available guidance here does not establish one universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval for every stream. Use the settings recommended for your encoder and YouTube’s current instructions, then test the actual stream rather than assuming the preview is correct. YouTube recommends setting up early and checking the Live Control Room preview. See YouTube’s live-stream tips and test guidance.
Test before the real broadcast
- Run a test stream before an event, using public or unlisted visibility as appropriate for the test.
- Check from a viewer’s perspective that the stream opens and has the intended visibility.
- Listen for clean, understandable audio and watch for a stable picture; verify the camera, gameplay, and overlays you mean to show.
- For an encoder stream, start setup early enough to confirm the Live Control Room preview before the event begins.
A test catches common setup mistakes while there is still time to correct them. YouTube’s recommendations are in its live-stream tips.

Follow YouTube’s rules and protect your channel
Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. If YouTube restricts your channel from live streaming, using another channel to get around that restriction is prohibited and can lead to account termination. Review YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions guidance and the applicable policies before broadcasting content you do not own or have permission to use.
Troubleshoot common starting problems
- You cannot find the Go Live option: confirm channel verification and eligibility, check for a live-stream restriction in the past 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Mobile live streaming is unavailable: check the extra mobile requirements, including the subscriber threshold and supported operating system in YouTube’s current mobile instructions.
- The webcam preview shows the wrong device or no sound: revisit the webcam setup and select the intended camera and microphone before going live.
- An encoder is not appearing in Live Control Room: confirm that the encoder is sending to the stream key associated with the intended YouTube broadcast, then wait for the preview and check the connection before starting.
- Viewers cannot access the stream: verify its visibility setting and test access from a viewer’s perspective before the event.
