If your church’s YouTube sermon stream goes black between videos, first check the playback source in OBS: use Media Source for one video and turn on Loop if it should repeat; use VLC Video Source for a playlist and turn on Loop Playlist if it should restart. Then check what the source does when playback ends or the scene hides it. Compare OBS’s output with YouTube’s preview to tell a playback issue from a stream or encoder problem.
Find out where the black screen appears
Watch the OBS preview or program output and the YouTube Live Control Room preview at the moment one video ends and the next should begin. If the scene is still there in OBS but the video disappears, freezes, or turns black, start with the source’s playback and visibility settings. If OBS looks correct but YouTube’s preview is missing or degraded, investigate the encoder connection and YouTube stream status instead. The black interval alone does not identify the cause.
Choose the right OBS source
| What you are playing | OBS source | Setting to check | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| One local video file | Media Source | Loop repeats the file. Check Show nothing when playback ends if the source disappears at the end. | Local audio/video file |
| A sequence of local files | VLC Video Source | Loop Playlist restarts the playlist after its final file. | VLC installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
These playback controls are documented in the OBS Project Media Sources guide, dated January 11, 2022. A loop setting tells the source to repeat; OBS does not guarantee that every combination of files and systems will transition without a visible gap.
Fix a single-video source
- In OBS, select the scene containing the sermon video.
- In the Sources list, select the video’s Media Source and open its properties.
- Confirm that the intended local file is selected. Enable Loop if the video should repeat.
- Check Show nothing when playback ends. If enabled, the source can show nothing at the end of playback; disable it if the video should remain visible instead.
- If the source is hidden during scene changes, review Close file when inactive. OBS unloads the file when hidden; when the source is shown again, it may take a short time to reload.
- Apply the settings and watch the OBS output through the end of the file. If it is part of a YouTube service, check the Live Control Room preview during the same transition.
Fix a playlist of sermon or announcement videos
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS: the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- In the relevant scene, add or select a VLC Video Source.
- Open the source properties. Confirm that every intended file is in the playlist and that the order is correct.
- Enable Loop Playlist if playback should return to the first file after the last one. This loops the list; it is distinct from the single-file Loop option in Media Source.
- Review Visibility Behaviour. The source can continue, pause, or stop when hidden. The documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible; choose the behavior that fits your scene changes.
- Test the actual transition between files in the intended scene, then confirm that YouTube’s Live Control Room preview is receiving the stream.
If the screen still goes black
- OBS also goes black at the boundary: Recheck the selected source type, file or playlist contents, loop setting, end-of-playback behavior, and visibility behavior. Make sure the playlist has not run out of files unless that is intended.
- OBS is fine, but YouTube is not: Check YouTube Live Control Room and the encoder connection rather than changing playlist settings blindly. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe connecting an encoder and checking the stream preview before going live.
- The source is briefly absent after switching scenes: Check whether Close file when inactive is unloading it. OBS notes that the source may take a short time to appear while the file reloads.
- The playlist source is unavailable or behaves unexpectedly: Verify that VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS, including the 64-bit VLC requirement for 64-bit OBS.
Test before the service
Run the scene with the actual videos in their intended order. Watch OBS output through each clip boundary and check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before the service begins. This checks the playback controls and the encoder-to-YouTube path, but it cannot guarantee that every file or system will be free of transition gaps or later failures.
