Keep your encoder sending video while clips change, and show a moving standby scene whenever no clip is ready. That prevents the encoder from simply leaving the outgoing clip’s last image on screen. YouTube does not offer a specific setting called “prevent frozen frame between videos”; the handoff is managed in your encoder or playback workflow.

First, identify when the picture freezes

  • Only between clips: Check how your playlist or media source hands off from one file to the next. Make sure another scene is producing video during the gap.
  • During clips, too: Check the encoder preview, network connection, encoder load and YouTube stream health. A freeze in the middle of a clip is not necessarily a transition problem.
  • Encoder preview moves, YouTube preview freezes: Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and connection indicators. A viewer’s frozen picture alone does not identify the cause.
  • Encoder preview freezes as well: Investigate source playback, the media files and the scene or playlist handoff before focusing on YouTube.

There is no official YouTube or OBS document that identifies one universal cause or setting for this exact symptom. Use the point at which the image freezes, the encoder preview and stream-health indicators to narrow it down.

Keep a continuous picture during each transition

  1. Keep the encoder session connected. Do not stop and restart the YouTube live feed for every clip. YouTube’s encoder workflow sends a video feed from streaming software or hardware; Google’s Live Streaming API also describes a continuous 24/7 feed. YouTube Live Streaming API: life of a broadcast
  2. Make a standby scene with ongoing motion. Use a short looping background, an animated “back shortly” slate or another suitable moving video. If the outgoing clip ends before the next file is ready, switch to this scene rather than leaving the outgoing scene visible.
  3. Arrange the handoff. Have the standby scene active before the current clip ends, or make it the immediate output while the next file opens. Then switch to the next clip. The exact controls depend on your encoder and playlist setup; this standby-scene approach is practical production advice, not an official YouTube recipe.
  4. Rehearse with the actual files. Check the outgoing clip, standby scene, next clip and audio in sequence. Confirm that the encoder preview keeps moving throughout the handoff.
  5. Test before going live. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. YouTube Help: live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

Check encoder settings and stream health

These settings support a healthy feed to YouTube; they do not create a standby scene or control playlist transitions. YouTube’s live-encoder guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For RTMP or RTMPS, it lists constant bitrate (CBR), recommends RTMPS and advises choosing a bitrate suited to your internet connection. YouTube Help: live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

If you use OBS, watch its connection indicator and “Dropped frames” counter. OBS says an increasing dropped-frame count, together with a yellow or red connection square, indicates a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS may drop video frames to avoid buffering. OBS: dropped frames and general connection issues

YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents that an active stream status means YouTube’s servers are receiving data from the encoder. YouTube also supports preview testing and separate testing and live broadcast states. Check the encoder’s local preview alongside YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages rather than relying on the viewer image alone. YouTube Live Streaming API: streams

Common causes and fixes

What you see What to check What to try
The last image holds only between clips Playlist or media-source handoff; whether another scene becomes active Put a moving standby scene into the handoff and rehearse with the actual playlist.
The picture freezes during a clip in the encoder preview Source playback, media file and encoder load Test the affected file on its own, then test the scene and playlist separately.
The encoder preview moves, but YouTube’s image freezes Stream-health messages, connection indicators and OBS dropped frames Check whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate; review the encoder settings and YouTube’s health messages.
OBS shows rising dropped frames and a yellow or red connection square Network stability and available upload capacity relative to bitrate Use a bitrate the connection can sustain, then test again and monitor the counter.
The image changes, but audio pauses or cuts out Audio behavior at the end and start of each file and during the standby scene Include representative audio in the rehearsal and verify the full transition before broadcasting.

Choose a local or cloud workflow

A local encoder gives you direct control of scenes and transitions, but it must keep sending the feed. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software at no charge and also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams. Those listings do not establish the current behavior, pricing or transition controls of either tool. YouTube Help: live streaming with an encoder
