That removes the playlist handoff where the flash occurs. First check whether the frame is in OBS’s recording or only in YouTube playback; the distinction determines what to fix.
Find out whether OBS or YouTube is showing the black frame
- Record a short local test in OBS. Include several playlist boundaries, then watch the recording around each transition.
- Compare it with the YouTube playback. If the local recording contains the flash, investigate the media playback path. If it does not, but YouTube playback does, investigate the stream connection and playback path instead.
A flash that recurs exactly at clip changes points first to the media handoff. OBS’s VLC Video source can play multiple files as a playlist, but its documented settings do not promise gapless transitions. OBS discussions and historical user reports describe blank or flashing frames at playlist boundaries; they do not establish that every current installation has the issue. Most dependable fix: make one continuous video
Join the clips into a single rendered file, check that it plays continuously at the joins, and use it as an OBS Media Source. This removes the playlist item change from the playback path, so OBS no longer has to hand off between separate files at each boundary. It is a practical troubleshooting recommendation, not a guarantee against every possible playback problem.
- Reliability: the combined file avoids the inter-item playlist handoff.
- Queue changes: a playlist is easier to rearrange or update; after changing a combined video’s contents or order, render it again.
Check the VLC Video playlist setup
If you want to keep a changeable playlist, verify the source before testing again. OBS requires VLC to be installed for the VLC Video source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Check that file paths are valid and the playlist is in the intended order. OBS’s documented controls include looping, shuffling, visibility behaviour, and network caching. They govern playback and source behaviour; OBS does not document them as a way to make transitions gapless. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

- Enable Loop Playlist if the playlist should repeat.
- Enable or disable Shuffle Playlist to match the intended order.
- Check Visibility Behaviour for how the source should behave when hidden or shown.
- Confirm network caching settings if the playlist uses network media.
Do not confuse a source gap with a network problem
Check OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator while streaming. OBS identifies a rising dropped-frames counter together with a yellow or red connection indicator as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. That calls for network or bitrate troubleshooting. A repeatable flash only at clip boundaries instead points first to media playback. OBS guidance on dropped frames.
Why a background scene may not cover the flash
A background can show through when a video source is hidden or outputs nothing. It cannot cover black pixels that an active, opaque video source is actually emitting. OBS’s Media Source option Show nothing when playback ends concerns the end of a media source; it does not promise to bridge the gap between items in a VLC playlist. For a decoded black frame at a clip boundary, use a continuous rendered file.
