1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst identify where the buffering occurs. If you are broadcasting, check your encoder’s dropped frames and connection status; if you are watching, test playback quality, another stream, and another device or network. Buffering can originate with the broadcaster’s upload or encoding, delivery between the platform and viewer, the viewer’s home network, or the playback device—so a problem on one viewer’s screen does not prove the stream itself is broken.
Find out whether you are broadcasting or watching
The right fix depends on which side is struggling. OBS identifies an unstable connection to the streaming service when its dropped-frame counter rises and the connection indicator turns yellow or red. A viewer’s buffering, by contrast, may be caused by the viewer’s connection or device, even if the broadcaster’s stream is healthy.
- If you are the broadcaster: inspect stream health and encoder status while the problem is happening.
- If you are watching: compare another stream, a different quality setting, another device, or another network.
These checks help narrow the cause; none alone proves exactly where a fault lies. Twitch’s dropped-frames guidance describes how a stream can be affected at different points between broadcaster and viewer.
If your own live stream is buffering
1. Check dropped frames and stream health
In OBS, watch the dropped-frame count and connection indicator during the interruption. OBS says increasing dropped frames alongside a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS may drop frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing; the counter is a diagnostic clue, not a reason to ignore a poor connection.

For YouTube broadcasts, test before the event and monitor stream-health messages while live. YouTube recommends a speed test for upload bitrate and a representative test using audio and motion similar to the real broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder and live-streaming guidance.
2. Make the bitrate fit stable upload capacity
Check upload speed—not download speed—and consider what remains available while other devices or applications are using the connection. Twitch’s general rule of thumb is upload speed equal to the configured stream bitrate plus 30%; its example is a 6 Mbps stream bitrate with at least 8 Mbps upload. This is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee: a speed test captures a moment and does not ensure the connection will remain stable throughout a stream.

If the connection cannot reliably sustain the current bitrate, lower the video bitrate. If needed, also lower resolution or frame rate so the stream fits both the available connection and the destination platform’s current guidance. Twitch recommends balancing internet speed, computer hardware, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate; check its broadcasting guidelines for its current recommendations. Do not assume one setting works for every platform or system.
3. Test the network path
If you are broadcasting over Wi-Fi, try a direct Ethernet connection and see whether the dropped frames change. Ethernet is a useful test, not a guaranteed cure. If upload performance is inadequate, restarting the router or contacting your ISP may help identify a network problem. Cloudflare’s live-streaming overview discusses network considerations; it does not establish that Wi-Fi or a router is always the cause.

Also avoid competing upload traffic during the broadcast where possible. A cloud backup, large upload, or another active stream can reduce the bandwidth available to your encoder.
4. Separate network trouble from encoding or rendering trouble
If OBS shows a healthy connection but the video still stutters, investigate encoding or rendering performance rather than immediately lowering network bitrate. Check OBS’s encoding-performance troubleshooting guide and reduce system or encoder load as appropriate. Network dropped frames and encoding/rendering lag point to different parts of the setup; changing the wrong setting may not help.

If the stream buffers while you are watching
Start with playback quality
Choose Auto quality if the player offers it. Twitch says Auto adapts quality to current network conditions; manually forcing a quality your connection cannot sustain can make playback worse. YouTube recommends Wi-Fi if you are having trouble over a mobile network. Mobile carrier limits on video streaming can also affect playback.
Compare streams, devices, and networks
- Try another live stream. If only one channel buffers, the broadcaster’s upload or encoder may be involved. If several streams or services buffer, investigate your network, device, ISP, or service delivery instead.
- Try the same stream on another device. If it works there, the original device, app, browser, or its available resources may be involved.
- Try another connection, such as Wi-Fi instead of mobile data, or vice versa. If performance changes, the original network path or its limits may be a factor.
These comparisons are diagnostic, not conclusive proof. Twitch’s playback troubleshooting page gives service-specific advice and recommended download speeds: 7–12 Mbps for 1080p60, 3–6 Mbps for 720p60, 1.1–3 Mbps for 480p, and 0.7–1.5 Mbps for 360p. Twitch does not state a publication year for these figures on the retrieved page. They are viewing recommendations for Twitch, not universal minimums for every service or a guarantee against buffering.

YouTube’s viewer troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. The page does not state a publication year for that figure. It is a YouTube recommendation, not a universal threshold or guarantee.
Common symptoms and what to try
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped frames rise and connection status turns yellow or red | Connection to the streaming service, available upload capacity, or configured bitrate | Compare bitrate with stable upload performance; reduce bitrate if needed and test Ethernet if currently on Wi-Fi. |
| OBS connection looks healthy, but the broadcast still stutters | Encoding or rendering performance | Use OBS encoding-performance guidance and reduce system or encoder load as applicable. |
| One channel buffers, while other live streams play normally | Potentially that broadcaster’s upload or encoder configuration | Compare on another device or network; the comparison narrows possibilities but does not confirm the cause. |
| Several streams or services buffer on one device or network | Viewer network, device, ISP, or service delivery | Try Auto quality, another device, and another connection; check for mobile data restrictions. |
