First find out where the freeze happens: in OBS’s preview or a local recording, in the stream sent to YouTube, or only in viewers’ playback. Those symptoms point to different causes. Check OBS’s performance and dropped-frame indicators before changing settings or buying hardware: local rendering or encoding trouble calls for reducing OBS’s workload, while rising dropped frames point toward the connection to the streaming server.
Identify what is freezing
Reproduce the problem and compare OBS with the outputs people are watching. Note whether a local recording freezes at the same moment as the OBS preview, whether the YouTube stream freezes while OBS remains responsive, or whether only some viewers report buffering. Also note the OBS performance and dropped-frame indicators. A freeze in one place does not establish a cause in another.
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| OBS preview or local recording stutters or freezes | Look for rendering or encoding performance problems, then test a simpler scene and lower output workload. |
| OBS’s dropped-frame count rises during streaming | Investigate the connection, bitrate, network software, and Wi-Fi or network hardware. |
| OBS shows no dropped frames, but viewers report buffering | Consider viewer connection differences and whether the stream’s bitrate or quality is too demanding for some viewers. |
OBS distinguishes local encoding or rendering problems from dropped frames caused by an unstable or insufficient connection. It also notes that viewer buffering can occur even when OBS is not dropping frames. See the OBS Project’s encoding performance guide, stream connection guide, and buffering guide.
If OBS preview or recording freezes
OBS has finite system resources for rendering scenes and encoding video. A busy scene, demanding sources or filters, high output resolution, or high frame rate can contribute to performance trouble. Test workload reductions before considering an upgrade.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Make a simple test scene. Temporarily disable nonessential sources and filters, especially those that add processing. If the freeze improves, re-enable items one at a time to identify which change affects performance.
- Reduce output workload for a test. Try a lower output resolution or frame rate. Fewer pixels and frames can reduce rendering and encoding demand; compare the result with the original settings.
- On Windows, test administrator mode if GPU overload is reported. Close OBS, reopen it using “Run as administrator,” and check whether the same scene behaves differently. OBS lists this as a step for GPU overload, not a guaranteed fix.
- Change one setting at a time. Re-test the same loop and scene after each change, so you can tell whether a setting helped rather than guessing from several simultaneous changes.
OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide describes GPU overload and advises reducing scene complexity and output demands. Its system requirements page is useful context, but it does not diagnose a particular computer or prove that a hardware purchase is needed.
If OBS’s dropped-frame count is rising
Rising dropped frames point to the connection from OBS to the remote stream server, not necessarily to a frozen video source or overloaded preview. OBS says it is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio itself to cause dropped frames in this connection-specific sense; do not apply that statement to all kinds of freezing.

- Check connection stability and available capacity. The connection needs to sustain the configured streaming bitrate. If it cannot, try a lower bitrate and compare the dropped-frame count.
- Test without network interference. Temporarily investigate VPNs, security tools, or network-optimizing software that could affect streaming. Change only one factor at a time.
- Prefer a wired connection for diagnosis. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming stability. If you are using Wi-Fi, test Ethernet if available before replacing equipment.
- Check drivers and relevant network hardware. Investigate network-adapter drivers and the router or other network equipment only if the connection symptoms support that branch.
- Consider dynamic bitrate as a compromise, not a repair. OBS notes that dynamic bitrate may reduce dropped frames when the connection cannot keep up, but it can lower stream quality and does not fix the underlying network limitation.
For the distinctions and connection troubleshooting steps, see OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
If only viewers see buffering
If OBS is not reporting dropped frames and the local preview or recording is smooth, the issue may be on the viewing side or a mismatch between stream demands and what some viewers’ connections can handle. Ask whether the problem affects everyone or only particular viewers, and compare the stream quality they are watching. OBS covers this case in its stream buffering troubleshooting guide.

When to test a different encoder or Windows setting
Hardware encoding
Only investigate a hardware encoder after evidence points to encoding load. Hardware encoding can move work off the CPU, but the suitable option depends on the computer, operating system, and available hardware. OBS documents NVENC, AMF, QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox with platform and hardware qualifications in its hardware encoding guide. A supported encoder is not proof that an upgrade is necessary or that it will fix a YouTube playback issue.
Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling on Windows
If you are on Windows and have performance trouble or hardware-encoder failures, OBS’s HAGS guide recommends testing with Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling turned off, then rebooting. Treat this as a reversible diagnostic: compare the same workload before and after, and restore the prior setting if it does not help. Follow the current instructions in the OBS HAGS guide; the relevant Windows controls can vary by system and version.

What to check about the video loop and YouTube
The phrase “looping videos” does not identify how the video enters OBS. It might be a browser source, a captured browser window, or another input, and the available details do not establish that one method is responsible for the freeze. First determine whether the source itself stops, whether OBS renders it smoothly, and whether the local recording and YouTube playback show the same failure. Avoid changing input methods until that comparison narrows the problem.
For a YouTube live stream, also make sure the video and audio you broadcast are permitted for your use. A technical fix cannot resolve copyright claims or YouTube policy issues, and the available symptom alone says nothing about the content’s rights or eligibility. Use the copyright safety checklist before streaming material you did not create or license.

Do not buy hardware until the symptom supports it
A graphics-card or computer upgrade is relevant only if diagnostics point to a rendering or encoding bottleneck and the actual system cannot handle the workload. Network equipment is relevant only if connection tests point to that bottleneck. OBS’s hardware encoding documentation explains the trade-offs and compatibility limits; it does not establish that new hardware will stop viewer-side buffering or a source-specific freeze. Start with the reversible checks above.
