If the PC does reboot, OBS can be configured to launch with --startstreaming, but that is a recovery aid—not a guarantee that YouTube will resume the intended broadcast. Test the whole setup in advance and verify the event in YouTube Live Control Room.
Prevent an update restart during the service
Preventing a restart and recovering after one are separate tasks. Start by reducing the chance of a restart while volunteers are setting up or the service is live.
- Open Windows Update settings and set Active hours to cover the setup and service period. The exact route and labels can vary by Windows version.
- If Windows has already queued a restart, use its restart-scheduling control to choose a suitable time after the service.
- Do not treat pausing updates as a permanent fix. Microsoft describes pausing as temporary; updates cannot be stopped entirely. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.
These settings lower the risk of an update-driven interruption, but they do not replace a recovery plan for an unexpected reboot.
Configure OBS to start streaming after a reboot
OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter can start streaming when OBS launches. It does not, by itself, make OBS launch after Windows restarts, select the right YouTube event, or prove that the channel is live. Set up a launch method and test it with your church’s exact profiles, event settings, and network.

Add the parameter to an OBS shortcut
- Locate the OBS Studio shortcut the streaming PC will use. Open its Properties.
- In the Target field, add a space after the closing quotation mark for the OBS executable path, then add
--startstreaming. Keep the existing path intact. - Apply the change and use that shortcut for a supervised test. Confirm that OBS opens the expected production setup and attempts to start streaming.
OBS documents launch parameters and shortcut setup in its Launch Parameters guide. A shortcut parameter only takes effect when OBS is launched through that shortcut. If you use Task Scheduler or another automated launch method, OBS says the OBS program folder must be set as the working directory (often shown as Start in).
Do not confuse automatic reconnect with reboot recovery
OBS has an automatic reconnect option in its Advanced settings for some interruptions while OBS remains open. A full Windows restart closes OBS; automatic reconnect is not the same as starting OBS again. OBS documents these separately in its overview and launch-parameter guidance.

A launch parameter is not a promise that a specific YouTube broadcast will continue unattended. Broadcast selection, channel settings, network readiness, OBS configuration, and the launch method can all affect the result. Do not rely on an untested watchdog script or repeated relaunch automation as though OBS officially guarantees it.
Check the YouTube event and test before service
Make sure volunteers know which scheduled broadcast is intended. In YouTube Studio, review the event’s settings, including whether auto-start or auto-stop is enabled. A stream key directs the encoder feed to the channel and event; treat it like a credential and do not share or expose it. - Set up the encoder stream ahead of the event and run a supervised test, rather than making the first test during the service.
- Check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room before going live. Confirm that the picture, sound, and selected event are correct.
- Monitor stream health during the test and service. YouTube reports stream-health errors and guidance in Live Control Room; see its streaming tips and live stream metrics guidance.
- If you intend to test post-reboot recovery, arrange a supervised test outside the service window. Confirm that the PC returns, OBS launches using the tested method, and the intended event receives the feed before relying on it.
YouTube recommends preparing and testing encoder streams in advance. A successful test is useful evidence about your setup, but it does not establish that every future reboot or broadcast will recover automatically.
What to do after an unexpected Windows restart
- Sign in and let the network reconnect. The official guidance does not establish a guaranteed wait time, so check actual connectivity instead of assuming an initial OBS connection error means the stream key is wrong.
- Launch OBS with the shortcut or scheduled method you tested. If your church uses multiple OBS profiles or scene collections, verify the expected ones are active; OBS supports launch parameters for selecting a profile, collection, or scene.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the intended event’s preview, status, and any error messages. Do not assume that OBS showing a connection attempt means YouTube is broadcasting the right event.
- Confirm the public-facing stream is accessible and that both picture and sound are correct. Have a volunteer verify the viewer experience when possible.
- If OBS is open but disconnecting or dropping frames, troubleshoot the connection rather than treating it as an update-restart issue. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide covers connection, bitrate, server, firewall/security software, and network settings.
Choose prevention, recovery, or both

Neither the cited Windows, OBS, nor YouTube documentation gives an automaticity or reliability percentage for these approaches. The practical choice depends on whether the PC is attended, whether volunteers can verify the selected event and live output, and how much interruption the service can tolerate. For a church livestream, use restart prevention and a tested recovery procedure together when feasible.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply
Automation does not change what content a channel may broadcast or how YouTube handles a livestream. Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, and check YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content. A loop running continuously is not, by itself, proof that a channel complies with copyright or monetization rules.
