OBS has no documented universal notification-blocking switch: Display Capture includes the whole monitor, so alerts shown on it may appear in the stream. For a stream focused on one app, use a window or application capture source when your system supports it. If viewers need to see the entire desktop, use your operating system’s current notification or focus controls, then test the stream output before going live.
First, identify what OBS is capturing
In OBS, select the scene you use for the stream and inspect its Sources list. Find the source that shows your desktop. OBS describes Display Capture as capturing “your entire monitor.” That means an operating-system notification displayed on that monitor can be part of the captured image. OBS: Display Capture Sources
If you only need to show a game or another application, switching to a source for that window can keep other desktop content out of the scene. If the stream needs the complete desktop, capture configuration alone may not prevent notifications; use the operating system’s notification or focus controls instead.
Choose the capture source for your stream

Switch to a selected window or application
Windows
- In OBS, open the scene used for the broadcast and select the existing desktop capture source.
- Add or replace it with Window Capture, then select the application window you want viewers to see.
- Check the OBS preview. Window Capture can show the selected window even when other windows overlap it, but confirm the intended app is selected and framed correctly. OBS: Window Capture Sources
macOS 13 and later
- Use the macOS Screen Capture source and choose its window or application capture mode.
- Select the intended window or application, then check the OBS preview before streaming.
- If an older Display Capture or Window Capture source is in your scene, note that OBS marks those older sources as deprecated on macOS 13 and directs users to macOS Screen Capture. The precise controls depend on your installed OBS and macOS versions. OBS: macOS Screen Capture
Linux
OBS documentation identifies Linux capture sources such as XSHM and PipeWire screen capture, but the available guidance here does not establish a notification-suppression path for every Linux distribution or desktop environment. Choose a capture source appropriate to your setup and consult documentation for your specific desktop’s notification controls if you need full-display capture.

If you need to show the full desktop
Use the notification or focus controls provided by your operating system to prevent alerts from appearing during the broadcast. Menu names and availability vary by OS version, so check the current instructions for the version you have installed; a guessed menu path could send you to the wrong control. This changes notification behavior at the operating-system level, rather than filtering notifications inside OBS.
OBS’s hide-from-capture options are for its own interface, not a general way to block system alerts:

- Windows: OBS Studio → Settings → General → Hide OBS windows from screen capture hides OBS windows from capture.
- macOS 13 and later: With a macOS Screen Capture source in Display Capture mode, select Hide OBS from capture to exclude OBS itself. OBS: Display Capture Sources
These options do not suppress notifications from your operating system or other apps. OBS also suggests minimizing its window or using a secondary display to keep OBS away from the captured display; those workarounds likewise do not silence notifications. OBS: Monitor Capture Troubleshooting
Test the scene before going live
- Start a short recording or private test stream using the exact scene and capture source you plan to use.
- Check the resulting video, including the corners and edges of the display where alerts may appear.
- If appropriate, wait for or trigger an ordinary notification during the test and inspect whether it appears in the output.
- If an alert is visible, switch to selected-window or application capture, or adjust your OS notification controls and test again.

Desktop notifications are not stream alerts
A desktop notification is drawn by the operating system or an application and can be included in a captured display. A stream alert is an intentional on-screen graphic. OBS says it does not directly provide stream alerts; third-party alert overlays can be added to an OBS scene as a Browser Source. Adding an alert overlay does not hide system notifications. OBS: FAQ
