To help LEGO sets retain good condition, keep bricks dry, away from heat sources and out of direct sunlight. For loose pieces, choose a storage format that suits your sorting system and collection size; for built models, an enclosure can help limit dust, but it does not automatically protect against light damage. These steps are sensible condition-care practices, not a guarantee of resale value: the available guidance does not quantify how storage or display choices affect what a set will sell for.
How should you store LEGO sets?
The LEGO Group recommends keeping bricks in a dry place, away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Its guidance warns that temperatures above 104°F (40°C) may make bricks brittle or discolored over time. That is a threshold in LEGO’s support guidance, not a promise that bricks below it cannot change or that a brief exposure above it will cause visible damage. See LEGO’s sorting and storage guidance.
- Avoid damp locations and spots beside heaters or other heat sources.
- Keep storage and display away from direct sunlight.
- Choose a storage setup that lets you organize and access the pieces without forcing one format on every collection.
Which storage option fits loose LEGO pieces?
LEGO lists clear storage bins, tool or craft boxes, sandwich bags, plastic drawer systems, food storage containers, LEGO Storage bricks and minifigure display cases as possible options. It says the best choice depends on how you sort and how large your collection is; it does not designate one as universally best.

Does sunlight make LEGO bricks yellow?
LEGO warns that direct sunlight may contribute to brittleness or discoloration over time, but its guidance does not provide a LEGO-specific rate or timeline for those changes. The Library of Congress explains that light damage to collections can include fading, yellowing, embrittlement and color change, and that exposure is cumulative. That is general conservation guidance for cultural heritage materials, not a LEGO-specific test. Read its guidance on limiting light damage.
Place sets away from direct sun rather than relying on a case alone. The Library of Congress notes that UV-absorbing glazing can help when UV cannot be removed from the light source, but visible light can still damage collections even after ultraviolet and infrared radiation are removed. Do not assume ordinary glass or acrylic blocks UV: verify the specifications of the particular glazing if UV protection is important.

Should you put displayed LEGO sets in a case?
A display case is an optional way to reduce dust reaching a built model. LEGO includes minifigure display cases among its storage options, but the guidance does not establish that every case protects against dust equally, prevents aging or blocks UV. Keep a cased model away from sunlight and heat, and treat any UV-blocking claim as specific to the case’s documented glazing rather than to display cases in general.
Open shelves leave a build exposed to room dust; an enclosure can reduce that exposure, but it is not a substitute for choosing a sensible location. The light advice above also applies to displayed models whether or not they are enclosed.

What is known about storage and LEGO resale value?
The cited guidance supports practical steps for protecting condition, but it does not measure their effect on resale prices or establish a numerical relationship between a particular storage method and a set’s future value. Good storage can help avoid preventable exposure to dampness, heat and direct sunlight; it cannot guarantee a specific sale price or that a set will retain its condition indefinitely.
