To keep thunderstorm and distant-thunder ambience live on YouTube around the clock, prepare audio and visuals you have rights to use, then send them through an encoder connected to YouTube’s Live Control Room. Verify the channel, copy its stream URL and key into the encoder, check the preview, and monitor the live feed. A computer-based setup depends on that computer and its internet connection staying available; a cloud option such as StreamNeo can keep an uploaded video looping without leaving a home computer on.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance requires a verified channel, no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and that the creator be at least 16 years old. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature before you plan a launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
- A thunderstorm recording and visual that you have permission to use for the live broadcast and any archive. Original material is the simplest route, but you still need rights to every element you did not create.
- An encoder workflow. YouTube supports encoder streaming for prepared audio/video feeds; its guidance lists OBS among verified encoder tools and notes that listed products are not made by YouTube. A dedicated camera, microphone, audio interface, or hardware encoder is not required just to send a prepared ambience feed.
- Time to test the sound, image, stream health, and public watch page before leaving the broadcast unattended.
Set up the YouTube encoder stream
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-stream setup flow and complete any verification or activation steps. If this is your first stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation, as YouTube’s encoder instructions specify.
- Create the live stream in Live Control Room. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream.
- Prepare the ambience feed. Add the storm audio and its visual to the encoder. For a long-running broadcast, make sure the audio loop joins cleanly, the level is comfortable and consistent, and the image does not disappear or freeze unexpectedly. These are practical checks, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
- Use suitable encoder settings. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe frequency, with AAC or MP3 audio. Set resolution and bitrate to match the source and the connection available; the cited guidance does not establish a single bitrate that is right for every resolution or setup. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current values.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check that the storm is audible, the visual is present, and the stream health indicators do not show a problem before starting or announcing the public broadcast.
- Go live and monitor. Confirm that viewers can reach the watch page, including from a mobile device. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring audio and video quality; for this format, listen for silent gaps, clipping, abrupt loop seams, and changes in level as well as checking the image.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate to the workflow. Do not assume a long-running feed will automatically produce one complete replay.
Choose encoder settings for a stable ambience feed
The broad YouTube encoder recommendations are a useful baseline, not a substitute for matching settings to your encoder, source, and available upload connection.
| Setting | Practical guidance |
|---|---|
| Bitrate mode | Use CBR, which YouTube recommends for live encoder streams. |
| Keyframe interval | Use a two-second keyframe frequency, YouTube’s general recommendation. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 are identified in YouTube’s general encoder guidance. |
| Resolution and bitrate | Choose values appropriate to the source and connection; check YouTube’s current resolution-specific guidance rather than guessing a universal bitrate. |
YouTube also documents HLS for compatible encoders. That is a protocol option, not a requirement for an ordinary ambience stream. Its HLS setup guidance specifies TS segments lasting one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Follow YouTube’s HLS setup instructions only if your encoder is configured to send HLS.
Test before leaving the stream running
YouTube recommends a test broadcast that includes audio and movement similar to the intended stream. For thunder ambience, test the complete loop and the actual visual, not just a brief encoder connection.

- Listen through several loop transitions for clicks, silence, abrupt volume changes, or a mismatched thunder tail.
- Check that the audio is audible on the Live Control Room preview and at a comfortable level on the public watch page.
- Verify that the image remains present and that the live watch page is reachable from a channel page and a mobile device.
- Watch stream health and monitor sound and picture after launch, as YouTube advises.
- For a local encoder, account for the computer, power, and internet connection being needed for the broadcast. A UPS may help with brief power interruptions, but it does not fix a lost internet connection or promise continuity.

Plan archives separately from the live feed
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast is longer than that threshold, so do not assume YouTube will save it as one uninterrupted replay. Decide whether you need replays, consider the run length and archive needs together, and check YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive. The guidance cited here does not promise how a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived. The threshold is described in YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Clear rights for thunder audio and visuals
Thunder recordings, sound designs, music, and visuals can have rights holders even when they depict or evoke natural ambience. YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility for necessary rights and applicable licensing on the person providing the content. Use material you created or have permission to use for the intended live and archived uses, and keep records of the permission or license.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can result in a placeholder replacing the stream; if the matched content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. If you have a license for third-party material, ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be added to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent an automated interruption. Read YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance and its live-stream terms.

Monetization is a separate question
YouTube’s encoder instructions say creators in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize a live stream. That does not establish that a particular looping ambience channel qualifies. The cited guidance does not resolve how YouTube will assess a specific channel’s repetitive or reused ambience content, so do not treat continuous streaming or use of an encoder as a monetization guarantee. Review current YouTube Partner Program policies for your channel and content.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | Confirm live streaming is enabled; check that the encoder has the current server URL and stream key, and that it is actually sending data. If the feature was just enabled for the first time, activation can take up to 24 hours. |
| Preview appears, but the stream is not public | Check the Live Control Room status and the selected stream workflow, then open the watch page directly and test access from another device. Do not assume that seeing an encoder preview alone means viewers can reach the broadcast. |
| Audio is missing or unstable | Check the encoder’s selected audio input and codec, confirm the source file plays, and inspect levels on the preview. Listen to loop boundaries and monitor the stream after launch. |
| Image is missing, frozen, or unexpectedly low quality | Check that the visual source is active, resolution and bitrate are appropriate to the upload connection, and the encoder is following YouTube’s current settings guidance. Review stream health rather than changing several settings at once. |
| Broadcast is interrupted after using licensed material | Check YouTube notifications and identify the matched content. Contact the rights holder about permissions and Content ID allowlisting; having a license may not alone prevent a live interruption. |
| No single full replay is available | Check the run duration and archive behavior. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but its cited guidance does not promise a complete archive for a longer continuous stream. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an HLS encoder for a thunderstorm stream?
Yes, if your encoder supports YouTube’s HLS setup. It is an option rather than a requirement; follow YouTube’s HLS-specific segment and playlist instructions.
