You can stream prerecorded medical lectures as a continuous YouTube live feed by sending them through an encoder or playout system. YouTube documents a 24/7 broadcast use case, but a stream running longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a YouTube replay. Plan for a separate local recording, and test the exact playback, archive, and restart behavior before relying on the channel.
Choose between one continuous feed and shorter broadcasts
First decide whether viewers need one persistent live destination, individual lecture replays, or both. YouTube’s API documentation describes a continuous 24/7 broadcast, but that example does not guarantee uptime or mean YouTube Studio will automatically turn a playlist into separate lecture videos. YouTube’s live-streaming API guide distinguishes the media stream from the viewer-facing broadcast and explains how a second broadcast can use the same stream while the continuous broadcast remains live.
| Operating pattern | Best fit | Trade-off to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| One continuous broadcast | A persistent live destination where continuity matters most. | If it exceeds 12 hours, YouTube may not capture it as a replay. You need an independent local recording if the archive matters. |
| Repeated shorter broadcasts | Discrete replay opportunities for individual sessions or blocks. | Requires dependable scheduling and restart procedures. Test how transitions appear to viewers and whether each broadcast is archived as intended. |
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, including encoder streams, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. “May not” is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be available or that every longer one will be lost. Keep a local recording rather than treating YouTube as the only copy. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Check channel eligibility and lecture permissions
Confirm live-stream access
The channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check live-stream access in YouTube Studio before building the playout schedule; a channel that cannot go live cannot run the feed. YouTube’s current setup guidance is in Live streaming tips.

Review rights, privacy, and platform rules
Before transmission, confirm that the institution or rights holder permits public live distribution of each lecture, including slides, figures, music, and any third-party material. Obtain any required speaker permissions and review the files for confidential or identifiable patient information. These are archive-specific checks: technical streaming guidance cannot establish ownership, consent, or institutional approval. YouTube also requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service and may restrict or remove a stream; review YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
Prepare the video sequence, encoder, and backup
Build a playout plan
Put the lecture files in the order you want viewers to see them, and decide what should happen at the end of the sequence: restart from the beginning, move to another block, or stop. A playout system must be able to sequence the recordings and send a continuing feed to YouTube. A playlist in your own system is not automatically a YouTube playlist or a set of separate YouTube replays.

Keep the original lecture files and record the outgoing feed locally. Estimate storage from the total recording time and the actual output file size, then allow room for the retention period and spare capacity. YouTube recommends a local archive; it does not prescribe a particular drive model or capacity.
Use the encoder settings required by your ingest route
Configure the encoder or playout software using YouTube’s requirements for the specific ingest protocol you select. There is no single bitrate, resolution, or keyframe value in the available guidance that applies to every encoder route, so do not copy HLS requirements onto a different protocol. Run a test with the actual files and encoder settings, then inspect both picture and sound in the preview.

If you specifically use YouTube’s HLS ingestion route, its HLS ingestion guidance is intended for encoder vendors. It calls for muxed M2TS audio and video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and a closed GOP; it supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Segment lengths of one to four seconds are recommended, and segments must not exceed five seconds. These constraints are for HLS, not a general settings recipe for every encoder.
Set up and test the YouTube broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule the live broadcast. Choose the broadcast details and audience settings appropriate for the channel and archive.
- Copy the stream key into the encoder. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it or include it in a public screenshot. Use the selected broadcast’s stream settings and verify that the encoder is sending to the intended destination.
- Start a test transmission and inspect Live Control Room preview. Check that the lecture image is legible, slides are not cropped, audio is audible and in sync, and transitions between files behave as planned.
- Check the viewer-facing result. Open the channel or watch page and test playback on a mobile device as well as the operator’s computer. Verify visibility and access using the intended audience settings.
- Confirm the local recording is growing. Check the output file during the test, not only after the stream ends. Make sure the destination has adequate free space and that the recording can be opened.
- Monitor the live feed during operation. Watch for frozen video, silent audio, failed transitions, encoder disconnects, and growing storage usage. Define who responds and how the feed will be restarted if it stops.
YouTube’s event checklist advises setup at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder 15 minutes before an event. Those are general event recommendations, not a special requirement for a 24/7 archive. Use them as a useful test and launch buffer, then adapt the monitoring schedule to your operation.

Plan replays and recovery before going live
If YouTube replays are important, schedule shorter broadcasts that stay below the 12-hour threshold and verify the result in a real test. Set a restart procedure that makes any transition understandable to viewers, and check whether the encoder or playout system reconnects automatically after a disconnect. Do not assume a successful restart will preserve one uninterrupted YouTube replay. Keep the local recording running independently so a platform archive limitation or interruption does not erase the only copy.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The encoder will not connect: Confirm the channel is eligible to stream, the selected broadcast is correct, and the stream key and ingest settings match. Recheck the chosen protocol’s requirements.
- Preview is black, frozen, or silent: Confirm the playout system is advancing through the files, inspect the outgoing audio and video, and verify that the media format is supported by the ingest path. Test with a known-good lecture file.
- Lecture changes are abrupt or the sequence stops: Check playlist order, end-of-file behavior, and whether the playout system is configured to continue or repeat. Rehearse a full sequence transition before launch.
- A long broadcast has no YouTube replay: Streams beyond 12 hours may not be captured. Retrieve the independently recorded local file; for future YouTube replays, test shorter broadcasts and confirm each archive appears.
- Local recording stops or storage fills: Check free space, recording destination, and whether the local recorder is still writing. Do not rely on the YouTube archive as a substitute backup.
- Viewers cannot watch: Check broadcast visibility and access settings, then test from a signed-out or intended audience account and a mobile device.
