You can use FFmpeg to loop a prepared windstorm video and publish it to YouTube Live, but the loop is only one part of a 24/7 stream. You also need a compatible FFmpeg build, YouTube’s current RTMPS address and stream key, enough stable upload bandwidth, and an always-on computer or hosted machine with a way to detect and restart failures. The setup below explains the pieces without pretending one command fits every operating system, file, and FFmpeg build.
What a 24/7 FFmpeg stream requires
FFmpeg reads media, optionally filters or transcodes it, and sends an output stream. It does not keep a computer awake, repair an internet connection, supervise itself after a crash, or guarantee that YouTube will keep a live session open. A loop repeats media; reliable continuous operation is a separate operations task.
- A prepared source: a video file suitable for looping, plus an audio track if the stream should have sound. A still image or generated visual does not provide ambience audio by itself.
- A destination: YouTube Live is one option. Copy the current RTMPS ingest address and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room; do not reuse an address or key copied from an old tutorial.
- An encoder path: a local FFmpeg build with the needed input, video and audio encoders, muxer, and RTMP/RTMPS protocol support.
- A continuously available host: a computer that stays awake, or hosted compute you configure and pay for separately.
- Monitoring and recovery: process supervision, logs, stream-health checks, and a plan for network or platform interruptions.
FFmpeg’s official command-line documentation describes its input, filtering, transcoding, and output model. Its protocol documentation covers protocols including RTMP. Available options depend on the build installed on your machine, so check its version and local help before adapting a template.
Prepare the video, audio, and YouTube destination
Check your source files
Decide whether the stream needs both picture and sound. For a windstorm ambience channel, choose an audio track deliberately: confirm that it is present, at a suitable level, and long enough or loopable for the intended presentation. Check that the visual and audio loop points will not create conspicuous pauses, clicks, jumps, or abrupt changes. If they have different durations, verify how your chosen FFmpeg input and mapping handle the mismatch rather than assuming they will repeat in sync indefinitely.

Before publishing, confirm you have the rights and permissions needed for every video, sound recording, music track, image, and other element in the stream. A long-running stream is not exempt from copyright rules. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization decisions are separate from whether you have permission to use material; do not assume that permission alone makes repetitive or republished content eligible for monetization. Review the platform’s current rules for your channel and content before launch.
Copy the current YouTube ingest details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Keep the key private: do not put a real key in a public command example, screenshot, source repository, or shared log.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube’s guidance covers encrypting a stream with RTMPS at Encrypt your stream using RTMPS; its live stream settings help explains relevant stream settings.
- Keep the stream private or unlisted for an initial test if that suits your needs, and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status before making it public.
Choose resolution, bitrate, and encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder recommendations are destination-specific and can change. The figures below are the H.264 recommendations for the stated resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance, checked on 2026-10-03. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page before launch; its recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

| Example output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | Lower encoding load and upload demand than the 1080p example; less visual detail. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | More detail, with higher encoding load and upload demand. |
These are recommendations, not guarantees that a particular source or connection will look or behave a certain way. Low motion in an ambience scene does not make connection capacity irrelevant. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and keyframes no more than four seconds apart. For a straightforward broadly compatible starting point, use H.264 video and AAC audio, both listed by YouTube; choose frame rate and audio settings that fit the actual source and current platform guidance. A high frame rate is not automatically useful for a mostly static scene.
Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends keeping 20% room beyond the stream bitrate and says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. Its current streaming tips explain this guidance. Measure the connection where the host will run, account for other traffic, and test at the intended output settings; a fluctuating connection can interrupt the stream even when a speed test once showed a sufficient peak.

Build an FFmpeg command for your setup
There is no safe universal command here: input names, looping behavior, timestamp handling, stream mapping, shell escaping, encoder availability, and endpoint format vary. Treat the following as a checklist for constructing the output, not as a paste-and-run command. Never replace the placeholders with a real key in material others can access.
- Confirm your build: run
ffmpeg -version, then consultffmpeg -hand the local help for the input, encoders, muxer, and protocol you intend to use. Check that your build actually supports the chosen H.264 encoder, AAC encoder, and RTMP/RTMPS output path. - Set the input and loop deliberately: point FFmpeg to the prepared video and, if separate, the intended audio. Choose loop and mapping options supported by your build. Verify how the input timestamps and durations behave at the loop boundary; do not assume independent picture and audio inputs will remain aligned forever.
- Decide whether to filter or scale: preserve the source where it matches the chosen output, or configure scaling and frame-rate conversion intentionally. Avoid silently choosing a larger output than the source can support.
- Configure video and audio encoding: select compatible encoders, H.264 video and AAC audio for the baseline above, a bitrate appropriate to the chosen output, CBR if supported by the selected encoder, and a two-second keyframe interval. Verify the exact option names and units in your local encoder help.
- Configure output and destination: choose an output format/protocol supported by your build, then use the RTMPS URL and stream key currently shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep secrets in protected configuration or environment storage rather than in a publicly visible script.
- Run a representative test: test the intended resolution, frame rate, audio level, motion, and duration. Check the YouTube preview and stream health as well as FFmpeg’s output and exit status.
FFmpeg can also produce outputs using other protocols. Do not mistake the experimental HTTP listen mode described in the FFmpeg protocols documentation for a production public streaming server: it is not the usual way to publish to YouTube, and the documentation warns that this output mode requires special care and configuration. Public multi-viewer delivery through your own server is a separate infrastructure project.

Make the stream stay up
Keep the host and connection available
A local computer must remain powered on, awake, connected, and able to read the media for the whole run. Prevent sleep or automatic shutdown using the settings appropriate to your operating system, and consider power and network interruptions at the location. A strong home connection is not the same as a guaranteed connection; YouTube’s advice is to leave upload headroom, and a disruption can break the stream.
Supervise the FFmpeg process
Run FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager or watchdog configured for your environment. Set it to detect an unexpected process exit and restart the job, and make sure repeated failures do not create an uncontrolled restart loop. Protect configuration files containing the stream key with appropriate file permissions, and keep logs somewhere you can inspect after an interruption. A restart policy helps with process crashes; it does not repair an offline host, restore a failed network, or prove that YouTube has accepted the resumed stream.

Monitor the stream, not just the process
- Check that FFmpeg is still running and that its logs show output rather than a stalled or failed input.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health status after starting or restarting.
- Listen for audio dropouts, clipping, silence, or loop-boundary artifacts; inspect the picture for freezes or jumps.
- Arrange an alert or a periodic human check appropriate to how important continuous availability is for your channel.
- Test recovery by observing what happens after a controlled interruption before relying on the setup. Do not assume a process restart always resumes the same YouTube session successfully.
Neither FFmpeg nor YouTube promises uninterrupted uptime for this setup. A loop solves repeat playback; supervision and monitoring reduce some failure risks but cannot eliminate them.
Plan replays separately from continuous streaming
YouTube’s encoder instructions state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour-or-longer stream will be archived as a complete replay. If a replay matters, consider whether shorter scheduled sessions suit the channel, or arrange a separate local recording workflow, then verify current YouTube behavior for the account and format you plan to use. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder for the platform’s current encoder and archive guidance.
Common FFmpeg and YouTube Live problems
| Symptom | Possible cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect or stale ingest URL/key, unsupported protocol, or a build without the needed protocol support. | Copy the current details from Live Control Room, confirm RTMPS support in your installed build, and inspect FFmpeg’s full error output. |
| Output starts but YouTube reports poor stream health | Upload capacity is too close to the stream bitrate, competing traffic, or an unstable connection. | Check actual upload stability at the host, reduce output bitrate or resolution if appropriate, and preserve the recommended upload headroom. |
| Picture or sound is missing | Wrong input selection, stream mapping, absent source audio, or an encoder/muxer configuration mismatch. | Inspect the source streams and FFmpeg mapping, confirm the chosen encoders are available, and test with both expected audio and video. |
| Audio and picture drift or jump at a loop point | Different input durations, timestamps, or loop behavior may be producing a discontinuity. | Test the loop in a representative run, inspect timestamps and mapping, and prepare aligned source material if needed. |
| The stream stops after running for a while | Host sleep, network interruption, process failure, or a platform/session event. | Check host power and sleep settings, FFmpeg logs and process status, connection stability, and YouTube stream health; configure supervision and test recovery. |
| A continuous stream has no complete replay | The cited YouTube archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed single archive for a 24-hour session. | Use shorter sessions or a separate recording plan if the replay is important, and verify current platform behavior. |
Costs and when dedicated hardware makes sense
FFmpeg is software; you do not need a standalone encoder to use it. A local always-on computer gives you direct control and access to local files, but requires power, maintenance, and a dependable connection. Hosted compute avoids leaving a home computer running, but introduces setup, storage, bandwidth, and recurring-cost questions that depend on the provider; no particular hosting service or price is established here. Standalone hardware encoding is another option described by YouTube, but it is not inherently necessary for a prepared ambience video. Consider it only if dedicated encoding hardware fits your operational needs; no particular model is recommended.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not supervise an FFmpeg machine at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service that keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded video in the cloud, supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free day.
