For a straightforward continuous broadcast, run FFmpeg on a Google Cloud virtual machine (VM), loop your playlist, and send the output to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. The VM must stay running, and the playlist files must remain accessible to FFmpeg. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a separate, more managed option for workflows that need cloud transcoding or HLS/DASH outputs; it is not required just to send an FFmpeg stream to YouTube.
Choose the right Google Cloud setup
| Decision | FFmpeg on a Google Cloud VM | Google Cloud Live Stream API |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Run an encoder and publish directly to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. | Ingest and transcode a live signal into HLS or DASH outputs, which are saved to Cloud Storage. |
| YouTube connection | Configure YouTube’s server URL and stream key in FFmpeg. | Configure remote distribution to YouTube if you want to relay the API output there. |
| Best fit | A single outbound YouTube stream where a software encoder meets the need. | Managed transcoding, alternate delivery formats, Cloud Storage output, backup input, or distribution. |
| What the cited documentation establishes | YouTube documents the encoder workflow; exact VM deployment and sizing depend on your workload. | Google documents the service architecture and features, but not an end-to-end YouTube deployment recipe. |
For a simple continuous playlist, start with the VM approach. Google’s Live Stream API accepts an encoder feed using RTMP or SRT, transcodes it to HLS or DASH, and can support features such as primary and backup inputs, live-to-VOD, and channel events. Google also documents distributing API output to remote endpoints over RTMP or SRT. Those capabilities add a service layer; they do not make the API necessary for a direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube broadcast. See the Live Stream API overview and remote distribution guide.
Prepare YouTube Live and the playlist
Activate live streaming and get credentials
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains where to find and enter them.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it as a credential: do not put it in a public script, source repository, or logs that others can read.
- If this is the channel’s first time going live, allow for activation to take up to 24 hours, as YouTube Help notes.
Make playlist inputs compatible
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer is useful when files have compatible stream layouts, but it is not a universal playlist reader for arbitrary media. Check that items have compatible codecs and stream structure, and test transitions. If they differ, normalize or transcode them to a consistent format before concatenating. FFmpeg’s media concatenation FAQ explains the concat demuxer and concat filter approaches.
For a single input, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option repeats it indefinitely. FFmpeg documents this option in its main options reference. For multiple items, prepare a compatible concat input, then loop the resulting input as appropriate. Ensure every file is stored on the VM or reliably accessible to the running process.

Run FFmpeg on a Google Cloud VM
Provision and prepare the VM
- Create a Compute Engine VM with an operating system and resources suitable for your media and encoding workload. No single VM size is established here: the load depends on whether FFmpeg copies streams or transcodes, along with resolution, frame rate, codec, and other settings.
- Install FFmpeg using the appropriate package or build for the VM’s operating system. Google’s Live Stream API prerequisites also identify FFmpeg as an encoder option, though that guide concerns API inputs rather than a ready-made VM deployment.
- Place the playlist files on the VM or mount storage in a way that remains available to FFmpeg. Verify permissions and paths as the account that will run the stream.
- Prepare a compatible concat input if the playlist contains multiple files. Test playback across every transition before relying on the broadcast.
- Run FFmpeg under a service manager or supervisor configured to restart it when appropriate. Add monitoring for process health and stream status; restart behavior and monitoring need to be designed for your uptime needs.
Configure the encoder output
A conceptual command shape for looping one input and publishing an RTMP/FLV output is:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i INPUT ... -f flv "YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/STREAM_KEY"

This is illustrative, not a paste-ready command. Replace the input, output URL, and key with your actual values, and choose the demuxer and encoding options for your files and YouTube’s current ingest settings. The official YouTube workflow uses a server URL and stream key in the encoder. Google’s FFmpeg example documents FLV output for an RTMP input in the Live Stream API context; it is not a YouTube-specific command. Avoid exposing the key in shell history, process listings, or logs where other users can see it.
Use an encoding mode compatible with your source and destination. Copying streams may avoid re-encoding when the inputs are already suitable and compatible; transcoding can help standardize differing files but increases CPU or accelerator demand. The available sources do not establish current YouTube bitrate, codec, resolution, or keyframe recommendations for every channel and ingest mode, so consult the current Live Control Room guidance for your stream rather than relying on guessed universal settings.

Verify the live feed and keep it running
- Start FFmpeg and check its output for input, encoding, and connection errors.
- Open the stream in Live Control Room and confirm that the preview appears and audio and video are continuous.
- Watch the playlist pass through each transition. Look for missing audio, black frames, freezes, or FFmpeg errors.
- Confirm that the VM supervisor restarts the process as intended after a controlled stop, and that your monitoring can alert you to a stopped process or failed feed.
These checks are operational precautions; no particular VM configuration or stream has been tested here.
When the Live Stream API is worth considering
Use the Google Cloud Live Stream API when you specifically need its managed input and transcoding workflow, HLS or DASH outputs in Cloud Storage, backup-input support, or distribution to remote endpoints. In that architecture, an encoder sends RTMP or SRT to the API input; a channel processes the signal, and configured outputs can be distributed onward. Review Google’s overview and distribution instructions for the relevant configuration. If your only goal is to send an FFmpeg playlist to YouTube, configuring FFmpeg with YouTube’s own ingest URL and key is the more direct route.

Costs, archives, and operational limits
- Google Cloud cost: A reliable estimate requires the VM size, region, runtime, network use, and whether you transcode. Those values are workload-specific; check current Google Cloud pricing and benchmark your chosen workload rather than assuming a monthly cost.
- YouTube archive behavior: YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not establish an archive guarantee for a stream lasting longer than 12 hours. If keeping recordings matters, plan separate recording or deliberate segments rather than relying on a single longer broadcast.
- Continuous operation: The VM, FFmpeg process, media storage, network path, and YouTube ingest all need to remain functional. A cloud VM removes the need to keep a home computer running, but it does not by itself configure process recovery or monitoring.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | Incorrect or stale server URL or stream key, or FFmpeg cannot reach the ingest endpoint. | Re-copy the credentials from Live Control Room, check the output URL construction, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection errors. Keep the key private while debugging. |
| The stream stops when a playlist item changes | Incompatible files or a concat input that does not match their stream layouts. | Check codecs and stream structure, test transitions locally, and normalize or transcode items to compatible properties. |
| Audio or video is missing or broken | Input layout, mapping, or encoding settings do not suit one or more files. | Inspect each input’s streams, verify the output mapping and chosen encoding, then test the whole playlist before going live. |
| The broadcast ends after FFmpeg exits | The process stopped and no supervisor restarted it. | Review FFmpeg logs, service-manager status, restart policy, and alerts; address the underlying failure before relying on continuous operation. |
| Encoding overloads the VM | The selected VM cannot handle the chosen transcoding workload or media settings. | Measure actual CPU or accelerator load with your files and settings, then adjust resources or reduce the workload. No universal VM size is established for this use. |
