You can run a continuous YouTube Live playlist from AWS Lightsail by running an encoder on a Linux instance, feeding it the playlist, and sending its output to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Lightsail provides the server; it does not supply a ready-made playlist streamer. You must choose and validate the encoder, playlist handling, resource size, and recovery setup for your video and desired stream quality.
What this setup does—and what it does not guarantee
The Linux instance runs an encoder process. That process reads or produces the video feed and sends it to YouTube over an outbound connection. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the Live Control Room workflow.
A playlist loop and a continuous YouTube broadcast are separate pieces. The encoder must keep producing valid video and audio, while YouTube must continue accepting the live session. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archive condition, not a guarantee that one encoder session can remain live indefinitely. Plan to test session behavior and recovery rather than treating a loop as an unlimited live session.
The official YouTube and AWS guidance does not prescribe a particular FFmpeg playlist command, playlist syntax, systemd unit, Lightsail size, or tested automatic-restart recipe for this use. Any such configuration needs to be validated with your own source, encoder, and channel before relying on it.

Before you create the Lightsail instance
Check channel eligibility
Live streaming must be enabled on the YouTube channel. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Confirm eligibility early so this does not become a last-minute blocker. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
Choose a source and decide where encoding happens
Decide whether your files are already encoded in a format and quality your chosen workflow can use, or whether the instance must encode them while streaming. Encoding on the host can require substantial CPU, particularly at higher resolutions or with demanding codecs. A source that can be passed through without re-encoding may have different CPU needs, but you still need to test the full pipeline.

Make an inventory of the intended playlist, its audio tracks, total storage footprint, target resolution and frame rate, and expected bitrate. Confirm that you have the rights to broadcast each item and preserve permissions for any archive.
Select a Lightsail bundle by measurement, not assumption
Lightsail bundles combine vCPU, memory, storage, and data transfer. AWS identifies compute-optimized plans as useful for video-encoding workloads, and recommends EC2 when a workload needs consistently high CPU performance and greater configurability. Neither statement establishes that a particular Lightsail bundle will handle your specific resolution, codec, source, and reliability needs. Review current bundle details for the instance’s region, then measure CPU, memory, disk use, and stream stability with your actual configuration. AWS Lightsail bundle guidance

Estimate outbound data transfer
Continuous streaming can consume a large share of a bundle’s transfer allowance. Allowances vary by region; inbound and outbound transfer count toward the allowance, and excess outbound internet transfer may incur charges. Treat the plan’s allowance as a billing threshold, not a performance guarantee. Check the current regional terms and monitor usage after the stream starts. AWS Lightsail data transfer guidance
For a rough estimate, use the actual encoded bitrate rather than the source file size. At a constant bitrate of B megabits per second, a stream sends approximately B × 0.45 gigabytes per hour, before protocol overhead. Multiply by planned hours to estimate outbound traffic, then compare that estimate with the allowance shown for your region and bundle. Variable-bitrate output can differ, so use observed transfer data for a more reliable projection.

Create and secure the Lightsail host
Launch a Linux instance
- In the AWS Lightsail console, create a Linux or Unix instance in the region you intend to use.
- Select a bundle after comparing its vCPU, memory, storage, and regional transfer allowance against your measured workload; do not infer suitability from the label alone.
- Connect to the instance using the administration method you choose, then install and configure your selected encoder and playlist source. Follow current documentation for that encoder and Linux distribution.
- Store playlist files where the encoder can read them and verify disk capacity, file permissions, audio/video compatibility, and available system resources before connecting to YouTube.
Keep your encoder and operating system maintained. Store any stream key in a protected configuration or secret mechanism rather than embedding it in a public script or sharing it in logs.
Review the Lightsail firewall
Lightsail filters inbound traffic to the instance’s public IP, allows outbound traffic, and maintains separate IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules. Restrict SSH access to trusted source IP addresses where practical, and review both sets of firewall rules if you use both address families. The encoder sends its feed outbound to YouTube; you do not need to open an inbound YouTube ingest port merely to send that feed. AWS Lightsail firewall guidance

Decide whether to attach a static IP
A default public IPv4 address changes when an instance is stopped and started. Attaching a static IP preserves the address while it remains attached. Use one if you need a stable endpoint for administration or DNS; it is separate from the encoder’s outbound connection to YouTube. AWS guidance on static IPs

- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Do not substitute values from another stream or a generic example. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- Configure your encoder’s destination with the displayed URL and key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use the RTMPS endpoint provided for your stream when available. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance
- Configure the encoder to read or produce your intended playlist feed. The playlist format, looping behavior, and encoder options depend on the software you select; validate them against that software’s current documentation rather than relying on an untested command.
- Set output parameters based on your source, encoder capability, CPU headroom, and network capacity. YouTube supports H.264 video, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Test the playlist before depending on it
- Start with a private or unlisted test if that suits your channel and intended audience.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health information in Live Control Room. Confirm that video, audio, aspect ratio, and playback are correct.
- Watch the stream from its YouTube watch page and verify that the playlist advances or loops as intended, including at a file boundary.
- Observe CPU, memory, disk, and network use on the instance over a representative period. Test the actual source and output settings; a short successful preview does not prove the host can sustain the workload.
- Test what happens when the encoder process stops, the instance restarts, the network connection is interrupted, or YouTube ends or drops the session. Verify that your chosen process supervision and reconnect behavior do what you expect before leaving the system unattended.

Rights, archives, and platform rules
Having a file or playlist does not itself give you permission to broadcast it. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for the live content worldwide, including applicable music rights involving artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights holders. Confirm that your permissions cover both the live broadcast and any resulting archive, and comply with YouTube’s terms and applicable laws. YouTube Terms of Service
A continuous loop does not exempt a channel from copyright rules or other YouTube policies. Check the rights for every item in the playlist before streaming.
Common problems and what to check
