How to Stream a Folder of Videos to YouTube Live in Alphabetical Order From a Server

A folder will not alphabetize itself in OBS. Create and verify an ordered playlist, disable shuffle, configure YouTube ingestion, and test unattended playback on your server.

To stream a folder of prerecorded videos to YouTube Live in alphabetical order, first create an explicitly sorted playlist, then play it through an encoder such as OBS and send the encoder output to a YouTube Live ingestion endpoint. OBS does not automatically scan and alphabetize a folder: you must build and maintain the playlist yourself. For an unattended server, also plan how the encoder starts, reconnects, and handles playlist changes.

How the setup works

The workflow has four parts: source files, a deliberately ordered playlist, a player/encoder, and YouTube’s ingestion service. A folder is only a collection of files; alphabetical playback depends on the order supplied to the playlist-capable source. YouTube receives the encoded stream, not the folder itself.

This guide uses OBS’s VLC Video source as a documented playlist option. The exact steps for launching OBS as a background service, restarting it after a failure, and refreshing a playlist when files change depend on your server operating system and deployment. Those details are not established by the cited product documentation, so test them on your own setup before relying on continuous operation.

Choose what “alphabetical” means

Filename ordering can produce different results depending on the sort rule. Decide which behavior you want before generating the playlist; neither OBS’s media-source documentation nor YouTube defines a folder-sorting rule.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Lexicographic sorting: compares filename characters in sequence. For example, clip10.mp4 can come before clip2.mp4.
  • Natural sorting: interprets runs of digits numerically, so clip2.mp4 comes before clip10.mp4.
  • Case handling: decide whether uppercase and lowercase letters should be treated as equivalent. Also decide how punctuation, accented characters, and subfolders should be handled.

Generate a playlist in the exact order you intend to broadcast. If the sequence matters, inspect the resulting list rather than assuming the operating system’s default folder view matches your chosen rule.

Build the ordered playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
  2. Add the playlist-capable source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will be sent to YouTube. Add the media files in your prepared order. OBS describes this source as using VLC libraries and supporting a playlist.
  3. Set playback behavior. Turn off Shuffle Playlist so the supplied order is preserved. OBS documents shuffle as off by default. Enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to start again after the last item; OBS documents looping as on by default. Verify both settings in your source properties rather than relying on defaults.
  4. Check the files and transitions. OBS’s Media Source documentation lists formats including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm; the VLC Video source uses VLC libraries for broader media support. A listed format does not guarantee that every file’s codecs or transitions will work in your particular environment. Preview the sequence, including audio, before going live.
  5. Decide how updates work. Adding a file to the folder does not mean OBS will discover it or insert it into the playlist. If files change, regenerate or edit the playlist and verify its order. Test how your chosen setup applies changes while running.

Configure YouTube Live and the encoder

  1. Create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio. Obtain the current ingestion endpoint and stream key for the event or stream you intend to use. YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference describes ingestion addresses and stream names, including primary and backup addresses.
  2. Choose a protocol supported by your encoder. For a conventional software-encoder workflow where low latency is desired, RTMPS is a documented option. YouTube describes it as RTMP sent through SSL; use the correct RTMPS endpoint and port 443. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
  3. Enter the endpoint and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Use the current values supplied for the YouTube stream, not an old endpoint copied from an unrelated event. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not place it in a public script, shared configuration, or log.
  4. Start with a controlled test. Use a private or unlisted event where appropriate, then confirm the stream appears in YouTube and the files play in the intended order. Check the beginning, file changes, the end of the list, looping, and what happens after a brief network interruption.

RTMPS, HLS, DASH, and the OBS playlist are different things

The OBS VLC playlist source handles local playback; RTMPS, HLS, and DASH are ingestion protocols. They are not interchangeable settings within the playlist.

Option What it does Practical consideration
RTMPS Continuous RTMP transmission over SSL. YouTube describes it as a good choice for ordinary content needing low latency. Use the appropriate endpoint on port 443. YouTube RTMPS guide.
HLS Segment-based ingestion. YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. The HLS-specific requirements include 1–4 second segments, TS format, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube HLS setup.
DASH An ingestion protocol supported by YouTube with its own manifest and segment-delivery requirements. Do not assume a general-purpose media player or encoder supports YouTube DASH ingestion. See the protocol comparison.
OBS VLC Video source Plays the local playlist that supplies the video and audio to the encoder. Requires VLC; supplied playlist order is preserved when shuffle is off. OBS Media Sources.

HLS’s segment settings apply to HLS ingestion; they are not generic bitrate, keyframe, or RTMPS configuration values. Follow the settings required by your selected encoder and the current YouTube stream configuration. The cited sources do not establish a single bitrate, resolution, or keyframe recipe for every file, encoder, and server.

Make the server suitable for unattended playback

A successful manual test does not by itself establish that a server will keep broadcasting unattended. Before treating the setup as continuous, verify these operational details for your operating system and encoder version:

  • Whether OBS and its playback source start automatically after a restart, and whether they start in the correct scene.
  • Whether the encoder reconnects after YouTube or the network drops the connection, and whether playback resumes at the right point.
  • Whether the process can run without a logged-in desktop session in your server environment.
  • How a regenerated playlist is loaded, and whether a running stream notices added, removed, or renamed files.
  • Whether the server has enough capacity for the chosen files and encoding settings; requirements depend on the specific implementation.
  • How the stream key is stored and who can read it.

Test process failure, network loss, restart behavior, and playlist changes deliberately. Do not assume gapless transitions, automatic directory watching, or recovery behavior unless you have verified it in your own configuration.

Common problems and fixes

  • Files play in the wrong order: check the order of entries in the playlist and the sorting rule used to generate it. Confirm Shuffle Playlist is off. Alphabetical order is not automatically inferred from the folder.
  • A newly added file does not appear: regenerate or edit the playlist, then confirm how your running source loads the change. The OBS documentation cited here does not establish a directory watcher.
  • The VLC source is unavailable or fails to load: verify VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: check that the selected protocol is supported by the encoder and that the current endpoint, stream key, and protocol-specific settings match the YouTube stream.
  • HLS ingestion is rejected or delayed: inspect HLS-specific segment duration, TS format, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, byte-range use, and the number of outstanding segments against YouTube’s requirements. HLS is segment-based and has higher latency than continuous RTMP-style ingestion.
  • The stream stops after a disconnect or server restart: validate reconnect and unattended-start behavior for your particular server and encoder. The cited sources do not specify a universal service configuration or recovery procedure.

Cost and hardware

If you already have a server and local video files, this is principally a playlist, player, and encoder configuration task; the cited material does not establish that you need to buy a dedicated server, NAS, capture card, or hardware encoder. The practical costs depend on the server and software setup you choose.
