You can stream a folder of prerecorded videos to YouTube Live from a Raspberry Pi 5 with FFmpeg: make an ordered concat list, send it at real-time speed, and use stream copy only if the files already match your YouTube output settings. Otherwise, transcode and first verify that the Pi can sustain the chosen settings. The Pi 5 decodes HEVC video but has no dedicated hardware video encoder, so its encoding capacity depends on the software workload; no single resolution or frame rate is guaranteed for every setup.
What you need before starting
- A Raspberry Pi 5 with Raspberry Pi OS or another Linux installation, FFmpeg, reliable power, and enough storage for the video folder. The Pi 5 has a microSD slot and USB 3.0 ports; choose storage based on the size of your library. See the Raspberry Pi 5 specifications.
- A stable network connection. Gigabit Ethernet is available on the Pi 5 and is a practical choice for a stationary streaming device.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus the stream URL and stream key shown for the event in YouTube Studio.
- Video and audio files that FFmpeg can read, and time to test the whole chain before an event.
First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance. Enable it in advance rather than assuming a new channel can broadcast immediately.
Choose stream copy or transcoding
There are two ways to prepare the folder for YouTube. Stream copy avoids re-encoding and uses less CPU, but works only when the files’ codecs, stream parameters, timestamps, and container handling are compatible. Transcoding gives you control over output format and bitrate but uses the Pi 5’s CPU heavily.
| Path | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stream copy / remux | All files are compatible with the target stream and each other, and their timing works across file boundaries. | Lower compute demand; limited ability to change codec, bitrate, frame rate, or incompatible source properties. |
| Transcode | The sources differ or need output settings chosen for YouTube’s ingest requirements. | More control, but software video encoding can exceed the Pi’s sustainable CPU capacity at the selected settings. |
Raspberry Pi lists 4Kp60 HEVC decoding for Pi 5, but decoding is not encoding. Raspberry Pi’s Director of Software Engineering, Gordon Hollingworth, explained the design choice: “For Pi 5 we feel the hardware encode is a mm² too far.” Encoding is done on the processors, so do not infer a real-time output capability from the decoder specification. See Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 announcement.

Build a playback list from the folder
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads files in the order written in a text list. It does not automatically sort a directory, so choose the sequence deliberately: sort names lexically if that matches your intended order, or enter the files manually. A list named playlist.ffconcat can look like this:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'videos/01-opening.mp4'
file 'videos/02-gameplay.mp4'
file 'videos/03-outro.mp4'
Save the list where the relative paths resolve from your working directory, or use absolute paths. Quote paths containing spaces and confirm that each filename and capitalization matches the actual file. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation explains the list syntax and its safe-path behavior. The safe-path option rejects some paths by default; do not disable that safeguard casually. If your list needs absolute or unusual paths, understand the implications, use trusted local files, and test the list before streaming.

Preview the playlist locally before connecting to YouTube. Pay particular attention to transitions between files: differing codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts, or timestamps can cause errors, gaps, or discontinuities. A concat list is not a guarantee that arbitrary mixed media will play seamlessly.
Set up YouTube Live and protect the key
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream for the event and set the intended visibility and schedule.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or chat.
- Use the current ingest values provided for your stream. YouTube’s developer documentation describes RTMPS endpoints on port 443 over SSL and the endpoint/path arrangement; depending on the encoder, URL and stream name may be entered separately or combined. Use the values from Studio or the API rather than constructing a destination from an old example.
- Start FFmpeg, check the YouTube preview and stream health, then press Go live in Studio if the scheduled-stream flow requires it.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its current encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Select the bitrate from YouTube’s table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send; there is no one bitrate that fits every mode. For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit guidance; for stereo audio, it specifies 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.

Send the playlist with FFmpeg
First check which FFmpeg build and encoders are available on your Pi. Encoder names and RTMPS support depend on the installed build. A schematic command below shows the moving parts; replace placeholders with your actual paths, settings, and current YouTube destination. Do not paste a real stream key into a public example.
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE
-maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
-r FRAME_RATE -g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL_FRAMES
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This is a template, not a universal command. Confirm the installed encoder name with FFmpeg, substitute the exact bitrate appropriate to YouTube’s current table, and calculate the GOP/keyframe frame count to match a two-second interval at your chosen frame rate. Keep the key out of shell history where possible; an environment variable or restricted-permission configuration can reduce accidental exposure. If your Studio interface supplies separate URL and stream-name fields, follow that interface’s format. Some FFmpeg builds or media sets require different options.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The -re option paces file input approximately in real time rather than sending the playlist as fast as the storage can read it. The concat input may need -safe 0 for absolute or otherwise unsafe paths; use it only with trusted list contents. In a stream-copy attempt, replace the encoding options with stream copy (for example, -c copy) only after verifying all inputs and output compatibility. If the copy attempt fails at a boundary or YouTube rejects the stream, normalize the media or transcode instead.
Test the stream before an event
- Run the exact playlist and output settings in a private or unlisted test stream.
- Check representative clips with both motion and sound, including the first and last files and transitions between different source files.
- Watch YouTube Studio’s preview and stream-health indicators; a successful FFmpeg connection alone does not prove viewers receive clean video and audio.
- Leave the test running long enough to expose CPU saturation, thermal or power instability, dropped frames, network interruptions, or end-of-list behavior.
- If transcoding, begin with a modest resolution and frame rate. Observe CPU load and dropped frames, then increase settings only after a sustained clean test.
YouTube explicitly recommends testing before a live event; see its encoder setup instructions and live-control-room guidance. A stream under 12 hours is automatically archived under YouTube’s encoder help guidance. Do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for a broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer.

Make playback repeat only if you need it
A concat list plays in its listed order; repeat playback is a separate requirement. Configure looping deliberately for the FFmpeg version and input arrangement you have, or regenerate/restart the list as part of your operating procedure. The precise behavior can vary with FFmpeg build and source format, so test at least one full end-of-list transition. Do not treat a successful first pass as proof that an overnight or 24/7 loop will continue.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open a listed file | Wrong working directory, malformed quoting, filename mismatch, or safe-path rejection. | Check paths and capitalization; test the list from the intended directory. For absolute or unusual paths, review the concat demuxer’s safe-path rules before changing -safe. |
| Video/audio stops or glitches at a file boundary | Incompatible stream parameters or discontinuous timestamps across inputs. | Inspect each input’s codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio layout, and timing. Use compatible files or transcode them to a consistent format, then test transitions again. |
| Pi shows high CPU load or dropped frames | Software encoding is too demanding for the chosen source and output settings. | Reduce resolution, frame rate, or encoding complexity and run another sustained test. If files already match ingest needs, evaluate stream copy instead of re-encoding. |
| YouTube does not show a preview or reports stream health problems | Wrong ingest URL/key, unsupported or mismatched settings, network trouble, or encoder output issues. | Copy the current URL and key from the correct Studio stream, verify codec/CBR/bitrate/keyframe settings, and inspect network and FFmpeg logs. Confirm the preview and health status before going public. |
| Scheduled stream remains in preview | The Studio workflow may require a manual start after the encoder connects. | Check the control room and click Go live when that stream’s interface calls for it. |
| Playback ends after the final file | The list completed; looping was not configured or did not behave as expected. | Test the loop/restart procedure with the installed FFmpeg version and the actual media before relying on continuous playback. |
Cost and workload trade-offs
The Pi route uses hardware you own, but the stream depends on the Pi remaining powered, connected, and capable of sustaining its workload. Stream copy can reduce processing demand when source files are already compatible; transcoding offers format control at a CPU cost. Storage capacity depends on the size of the library, and this guidance does not establish a guaranteed output mode or frame rate for a particular Pi, operating system, FFmpeg build, media set, network, or cooling arrangement.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without keeping a Pi or home computer on, StreamNeo runs the playlist from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast a camera feed. StreamNeo includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
