You can stream gaming VODs stored on a NAS by having a computer read the files and play them through an encoder such as OBS Studio, which sends the live output to YouTube. The NAS supplies the media; it does not automatically turn a folder or media-library playlist into a YouTube live stream.
How the NAS-to-YouTube setup works
The practical chain is NAS storage → computer running OBS and VLC → YouTube Live Control Room. The computer must be able to reach and play every file over the network. OBS then uses VLC as a playlist source and encodes the playback as a live stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the stream URL and stream key to be entered in the encoder settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains that connection.
A NAS media server or DLNA library can make stored videos available to devices on a local network, but that is not the same as sending a live encoder feed to YouTube. Whether a particular NAS can run an encoder itself depends on its model, software, available codecs and resources; the steps below use a separate computer so the NAS only needs to provide readable files.
Prepare the VOD playlist and NAS share
- Arrange the files in the intended order. Check that every VOD has working video and audio, and decide whether the sequence should repeat or shuffle. If order matters, use a fixed playlist rather than shuffle.
- Connect the computer to the NAS share. Use your operating system’s normal network-share method and confirm you can open the files from the computer that will run OBS. Exact mount steps vary by operating system and NAS model; the cited Synology DSM 6.2.3 media-server guide is a legacy example of LAN media serving, not a universal mounting guide.
- Test the full playlist locally. Open the files from the network share and check playback, audio, and access to each file. Resolve permission problems or intermittent NAS availability before starting a broadcast.
Set up OBS to play the playlist
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS. OBS’s Media Sources documentation says its VLC Video source supports a playlist, with loop and shuffle controls.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you intend to stream. Add the VOD files from the NAS share to the source’s playlist.
- Set loop and shuffle to match the broadcast plan. Verify the order, playback transitions, picture and audio in OBS. If a file does not appear or play, check that the NAS share is mounted and that VLC and OBS can access that path.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal if appropriate. Confirm that the playlist advances as expected and that the NAS connection remains available during playback. This is a practical check, not a guarantee that the network will stay connected during a later broadcast.
OBS describes the VLC source as allowing a playlist of items, similar to an image slideshow. This is the useful distinction from a basic single-file media source: the source can advance through multiple VODs without requiring you to manually change files during the stream.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder instructions at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key provided for the broadcast into the corresponding encoder settings in OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in shared screenshots.
- Start the OBS stream and check the YouTube preview. For a scheduled stream, follow YouTube’s preview and go-live controls to make the broadcast public when ready.
- Monitor the playback and audio, then end the stream through YouTube’s live controls when finished.
YouTube’s cited help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that statement to promise an archive for a stream that runs 12 hours or longer.
Choose the ingest protocol only if you need to
For the OBS workflow, use the protocol and encoder settings that YouTube provides for the stream. YouTube also documents HLS for compatible encoders; HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide. The available information does not establish a reason to add HLS complexity for an ordinary gaming VOD playlist; use it when your encoder or broadcast requirements call for it.

Alternative: run an FFmpeg pipeline
FFmpeg can stream media to an RTMP server in real time; its protocol documentation demonstrates file output using -re and an RTMP destination. This is an option for readers comfortable configuring command-line media tools, but it is not a ready-to-run YouTube playlist recipe. The cited example does not specify YouTube’s current endpoint, authentication handling, playlist concatenation, restart behavior, NAS compatibility, or safe handling of the stream key. Confirm each of those details against current YouTube guidance and your system before relying on a custom pipeline. FFmpeg’s general capability also does not establish that your NAS can run it.
Common problems and fixes
- OBS cannot see a VOD on the NAS: confirm the share is mounted on the computer running OBS, check read permissions, and open the file from that computer before adding it to the VLC playlist.
- The playlist stops or skips unexpectedly: review the playlist entries and playback locally, then check whether the affected file is reachable and playable from the NAS share. Set loop or shuffle deliberately rather than assuming the default matches your plan.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: verify that the stream URL and key were copied into the encoder settings for the intended live event, then check the Live Control Room preview and follow its go-live process.
- The stream key may have been exposed: keep it private and use YouTube’s current controls to manage the key before the next broadcast.
- You want lower latency: HLS is an option for compatible encoders, but YouTube documents higher latency than RTMP because HLS uses segments. Confirm that the tradeoff fits the broadcast rather than changing protocols without a need.
