For a reliable broadcast, first confirm your channel can livestream, use YouTube’s recommended encoding settings, test the server’s sustained upload, and plan for monitoring and restarts. A successful stream does not automatically clear game or music rights, qualify for monetization, or guarantee a complete 24-hour archive.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to livestream. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, and a channel must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube also requires streamers to be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A Linux host with the VOD file available and enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the chosen video bitrate, plus room for network variation.
- An encoder that can send the file as a live feed to YouTube. FFmpeg is a common Linux option, but exact commands depend on the file’s codecs, tracks, and the installed FFmpeg build.
- Permission to broadcast the gameplay and any music or other material in the recording. Technical access to YouTube Live does not provide those rights.
Create the YouTube live event and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream/event you want the VOD to feed.
- In the event’s encoder settings, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube documents this URL-and-key workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Provide the URL and key to the encoder’s output configuration. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, shared log, or other public location. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Keep the event available in Live Control Room so you can check its preview, alerts, and stream health while testing and operating.
Inspect the VOD and choose an output quality
Before configuring an encoder, inspect the actual recording: resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and whether the expected audio track is present. Whether the file can be sent without transcoding depends on those properties and the encoder’s capabilities. Do not assume that a file’s playback quality tells you the bitrate your server must upload; the outgoing live feed has its own encoding settings.
YouTube’s published H.264 encoder recommendations are below. They are ingestion recommendations, not guarantees that a particular Indian server or connection will sustain the bitrate. Test the host’s upload over time and choose a rate below its reliable capacity, allowing headroom for variation.

These values are from YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance. Its AV1 and H.265 recommendations differ, so use the table for the codec you actually configure rather than applying H.264 values to another codec.

Configure and test the encoder
For RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, YouTube’s guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), an accepted video codec (H.264, H.265, or AV1), and AAC or MP3 audio. Set the keyframe interval to about two seconds and do not exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to YouTube. Use the current YouTube settings page for codec-specific requirements and any resolution/frame-rate limits.
- Set the encoder’s destination to the server URL and stream key from the event.
- Choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate supported by both your encoder and YouTube; keep the bitrate within the host’s tested sustained upload capacity.
- Set CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never longer than four seconds), and a supported audio codec. Confirm the file has usable audio if you expect sound on the stream.
- Start with a private or unlisted test event where appropriate. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health alerts; listen for audio, watch motion and aspect ratio, and confirm the feed remains stable before relying on it.
- Test the exact recording and intended runtime. A short test can reveal configuration errors, but it cannot establish that a server and connection will remain healthy indefinitely.
No single FFmpeg command is guaranteed for every VOD: source formats, track layout, FFmpeg build, and host capacity vary. Build and validate the command against the actual file and installed encoder rather than copying an unverified command into a 24/7 service.

Keep the Linux stream running unattended
A running encoder process is not by itself a 24/7 availability plan. The operator remains responsible for the host, network, file access, and recovery. YouTube’s encoder setup and health tools do not guarantee your server’s uptime.
- Restart behavior: arrange for the encoder to start after a host reboot and decide how it should restart after an unexpected exit. Test both cases rather than assuming a process will recover.
- Monitoring: watch process state, outgoing bitrate, disk space, and YouTube stream health. Set up a way to notice a failed feed or host outage when you are not logged in.
- Logs and storage: keep logs useful for diagnosing disconnects, but rotate them so they cannot fill the disk. Ensure the source file remains available and is not moved or deleted while in use.
- Network capacity: account for the continuous outbound traffic and confirm the server plan’s bandwidth rules and limits with its provider. No particular Indian region, VPS price, bandwidth allocation, or uptime service level is established here.
- Reconnect testing: observe what happens if the encoder or network disconnects. A process restart and YouTube accepting a new feed are separate parts of recovery; verify the behavior with your event before leaving it unattended.
Rights, monetization, and the 24-hour archive
Gameplay and music rights
Check the publisher’s commercial-use terms for the specific game and obtain separate rights for music or other third-party material in the VOD. YouTube’s video game and software content guidance says monetization depends on the publisher’s licensing terms and warns that extended gameplay without appropriate rights may not be accepted for monetization. YouTube’s livestream terms also require the uploader to have the necessary rights for live content, including relevant music rights.

Monetization and repetitive content
Being technically live does not make a loop eligible for ads. YouTube says videos simply showing gameplay or software use for extended periods may not be accepted for monetization. Its channel monetization policies apply to live streams and identify repetitive or mass-produced material as “inauthentic” content; the July 15, 2025 clarification emphasizes original, authentic content that offers value. Commentary closely tied to gameplay and instructional or educational value may be relevant, but eligibility depends on the content and applicable policies—not merely the broadcast method. Archive limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise a complete archive for one continuous stream longer than 12 hours. For a 24/7 channel, plan and test an event-segmentation and archive workflow instead of assuming the full broadcast will be saved; YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify an optimal segmentation schedule.
