To stream a prerecorded forest ambience video continuously on YouTube Live, create a YouTube live event, copy its ingest URL and stream key, then run FFmpeg with -re and -stream_loop -1 before the input file. The example below targets 1080p30 with H.264 video and AAC audio; adjust it to your media and available upload bandwidth, and test the preview before going live.

1. Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key

YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream or select a scheduled event, then copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. The stream key is a connection credential: keep it private, do not paste a real key into public instructions or a shared shell-history example, and reset it in Studio if it is exposed. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and stream settings guidance explain the setup.

For a scheduled event, start FFmpeg and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check picture and sound, then choose Go live. For an immediate stream, follow the current Live Control Room flow and verify that the stream is live. Choose public, private, or unlisted deliberately; an unlisted or private event can be useful for a test, depending on who needs to inspect it.

2. Run FFmpeg with looping and real-time pacing

FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 loops the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so place it before the corresponding -i. The -re option reads a file at its native frame rate, which paces file input for real-time output such as live streaming. Keep input options before -i and output options after it.

STREAM_URL='rtmps://YOUR_SERVER_URL_FROM_LIVE_CONTROL_ROOM/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i forest-ambience.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$STREAM_URL"

Replace the destination with the exact URL and key from Live Control Room. Preserve the actual URL format YouTube provides; the example’s placeholder is not a working destination. This command assumes one combined file containing the forest video and its ambience audio. It is an illustrative starting configuration, not a tested guarantee for your file, FFmpeg build, hardware, or connection. FFmpeg’s documentation describes these input and output options.

3. Choose settings that fit the footage and connection

The example encodes 1080p30 H.264. YouTube’s current, undated encoder settings table lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 10 Mbps as the recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p30; those figures do not apply universally to other resolutions or frame rates. Its stereo audio guidance is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. The example’s -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, equivalent to a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps.

Setting Example value When to change it
Video codec and pixel format H.264 (libx264), yuv420p Use an ingest-compatible codec and match settings to the source and your workflow. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video for ingest.
Video bitrate 10 Mbps target; 10 Mbps maximum rate For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. Select the appropriate bitrate for other resolutions and frame rates rather than treating 10 Mbps as a general requirement.
Keyframe interval 60 frames, or two seconds at 30 fps YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. If the frame rate differs, set the GOP to match the desired interval in seconds.
Audio AAC, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz These are YouTube’s stereo guidance values used by this example. Check that the file contains the intended audio and that it plays cleanly.
Ingest protocol RTMPS placeholder in the example YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Use the server URL provided for the event.

YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. For SDR, it lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth among advanced settings. Match the output to the video you intend to send and the options available in your FFmpeg build; do not assume every source benefits from upscaling or a higher frame rate.

Check your stable upload capacity before choosing a bitrate. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee of a reliable connection. Its encoder settings and streaming tips should be checked again if platform requirements or labels change.

4. Preflight, start, and monitor the stream

  1. Confirm eligibility and event: verify live access, then create the intended stream or scheduled event in YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live.
  2. Copy the destination securely: take the stream URL and key from that event’s Live Control Room. Do not share the key; reset it in Studio if compromised.
  3. Check the media: play the local file and confirm it has the expected picture and sound. Watch the loop boundary for a black frame, abrupt audio cut, or other discontinuity.
  4. Check rights: confirm that the permissions for both footage and audio cover livestreaming and any retained archive.
  5. Set bitrate and headroom: use settings appropriate to the resolution and frame rate, and leave the upload margin YouTube recommends.
  6. Start early enough to inspect: run FFmpeg, wait for the Live Control Room preview, and inspect picture, sound, and stream-health messages before going live.
  7. Monitor during the broadcast: watch for health warnings, stutters, or changes in audio/video quality. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream.

5. Plan for duration, archives, and content rights

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat that as an operational boundary: if you need a recording, end the stream and verify the archive in Studio, and keep a separate local master when appropriate. Automatic archiving does not guarantee that FFmpeg will run without interruption or that the resulting archive will be error-free. YouTube advises stopping the encoder after the event ends. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Use original recordings, properly licensed assets, or material whose permissions cover both live transmission and any saved archive. Retain license records and check terms for attribution, modification, commercial use, and duration. YouTube’s setup guidance says streamed audio and video should not infringe others’ content; whether a particular file is cleared depends on its rights and license.

6. Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
No incoming preview Incorrect server URL or key, wrong event, or the encoder is not sending successfully. Copy the destination again from the intended Live Control Room event, check FFmpeg’s output for connection errors, and keep the key private.
Preview arrives but will not go live The event flow may still require confirmation, or the stream may not yet be ready. Check Live Control Room’s current status and follow its prompts; for a scheduled event, inspect the preview before selecting Go live.
Connection or stream-health warnings Upload capacity may be inadequate or unstable for the configured total bitrate. Measure the connection under typical conditions, lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as appropriate, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
Stutter, black frames, or abrupt loop transitions The source file may contain a discontinuity, or the machine may struggle to decode and encode it in real time. Inspect the source and loop boundary, check FFmpeg output and system load, and test a lower-cost encoding configuration before the public event.
Missing or poor audio The file may be silent, have an unexpected audio track, or use unsuitable output settings. Check the file’s audio before streaming and listen to the Live Control Room preview. The example expects audio in the same file and encodes it as AAC.
Stream stops at the end of the file The looping option may be missing, placed after the input, or applied to a different input. Put -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i; verify that the command is using the intended file.
Archive is missing or incomplete The stream may have exceeded the stated automatic-archive duration boundary, ended unexpectedly, or not finished processing. End and verify the event in Studio, allow the archive to process, and retain a local master when the recording matters.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want FFmpeg and your computer to remain running, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud.
