How to Stream a Looping Video to YouTube Live With Fades Between Clips

Loop a rendered video with fades for the most predictable automatic transitions, or use VLC Video for separate looping clips. Here’s how to set up OBS and YouTube Live.

For fades between clips that run automatically, combine the clips and their fades into one continuous video, then loop that file in OBS Studio. OBS can loop a single Media Source, and its VLC Video source can loop a playlist, but the documented playlist controls do not promise automatic fades between separate files. OBS’s built-in Fade transitions between scenes, not automatically between items in a VLC playlist.

Choose how to play the clips

Approach Best for Looping Fade between clips Dependency
One rendered video in Media Source A continuous programme where clip transitions need to be predictable Enable Loop on the file Add fades in the edit before exporting A video editor and an export of the finished sequence
Separate files in VLC Video A simple ordered or shuffled playlist Enable Loop Playlist; leave shuffle off to preserve order The documented playlist controls do not specify automatic fades between files. Scene transitions apply when switching scenes. VLC installed with an architecture matching OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC

For an unattended loop with a fade at every boundary, the rendered-file approach is the straightforward fit: prepare and export the transitions as part of the programme, then loop the export. This recommendation follows from the documented distinction between playlist looping and scene transitions; it is not a claim that OBS certifies a particular editing workflow.

Prepare the video and confirm usage rights

  1. Check rights first. Use video and audio you created or have permission to stream. A live broadcast can still raise copyright issues even when it uses prerecorded clips.
  2. Decide how transitions will work. If every boundary needs a fade without an operator, edit the clips into one timeline and render one continuous file. If you want separate playlist entries, use VLC Video and do not assume it will crossfade them.
  3. Check the loop point. Review the end and beginning of the finished file together. If the join is abrupt, adjust the edit or add a transition across the loop point before export.
  4. Export and check the result. Confirm that the exported video and audio play as intended in a media player before loading it into OBS. Choose resolution and frame rate appropriate to your source and stream; the cited workflow sources do not prescribe a universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or export format for this particular loop.

Set up looping in OBS

Loop one continuous file

  1. In OBS, select or create the scene that will carry the programme.
  2. In Sources, select + and add Media Source.
  3. Choose the local rendered file in the source properties and enable Loop.
  4. Check the preview, including the end-to-start join, and confirm that the audio is present at a sensible level.

Loop separate files with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC before configuring the source. Match its architecture to OBS; the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  2. In OBS, select + in Sources and add VLC Video.
  3. Add the files in the intended order. Leave shuffle off if the order matters.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist, then review the preview as the playlist reaches a clip boundary.

This setup loops the playlist, but the cited OBS documentation does not establish that it fades between playlist entries. To guarantee automatic clip-boundary fades, use a pre-rendered continuous file instead.

What OBS Fade does—and does not do

OBS uses scenes and sources: a scene can contain one or more sources, and a scene transition changes from the outgoing scene to the incoming scene. To fade between two scenes, choose Fade under Scene Transitions and set a duration that suits the material. Preview the change before going live.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A scene Fade is not an automatic crossfade for files inside one VLC Video playlist. You can put clips in separately controlled scenes and switch between those scenes with a Fade, but that requires an operator or a separately configured automation mechanism to make the switches. The fade duration is a creative choice; test it with the footage and your stream cadence.

OBS also documents show and hide transitions for animating a source’s visibility. That is a source visibility animation, not documented automatic crossfading between VLC playlist items. OBS’s image-slideshow fade and loop controls apply to images, not this video playlist workflow.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live. Create a stream or schedule one in Live Control Room.
  2. In Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key. In OBS’s stream settings, enter the URL and key as the encoder connection details.
  3. Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes it as the encoder’s password and address. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the new key. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
  4. Start streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room, check picture and audio, then click Go live when ready. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover this launch flow.
  5. Check the YouTube watch page while the broadcast is running before leaving the setup unattended. To finish, stop sending from the encoder and end the stream in YouTube Studio as appropriate.

First-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s current Help guidance. Enable live streaming ahead of the time you need to broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; plan a restart or a new event if you need to run longer rather than relying on an indefinite archive.

Do you need HLS?

No special HLS setup is needed just to loop a prerecorded video through OBS. YouTube describes HLS as an ingest option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP; its guidance notes higher latency than RTMP and additional segment and rolling-playlist requirements. Use the protocol supported by your encoder and chosen stream configuration. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Troubleshooting

  • The file stops instead of repeating: For one file, open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For multiple files, confirm Loop Playlist is enabled in VLC Video.
  • The VLC playlist source is missing or does not work: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. The OBS documentation specifically requires 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • Clips change without fading: Playlist looping does not document automatic fades. Render the clips and fades into one file, or switch between separately controlled scenes using a scene transition.
  • The clips play in an unexpected order: Check the playlist order and turn shuffle off if you need a fixed sequence.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS against Live Control Room. If the key was reset or exposed, update OBS with the current key.
  • The scheduled stream has no usable preview: Confirm OBS is sending, then inspect the preview in Live Control Room before clicking Go live.
  • You need to broadcast for more than 12 hours: YouTube’s stated automatic archive limit applies to streams under 12 hours. Plan the broadcast as a restart or new event rather than assuming a longer stream will be archived automatically.
