To stream a podcast archive to YouTube Live from an Indian data-center VPS, create a live event in YouTube Studio, run an encoder on the VPS, and send it the event’s stream URL and key over RTMPS. The podcast audio must be accompanied by video, even if that video is only a still image. Match the encoder settings to your source and sustained outbound bandwidth, then verify YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before relying on the broadcast.
What you need before starting
- A podcast recording or archive file that you have the rights to broadcast.
- A VPS with enough CPU capacity for the encoder, a stable connection, and permission for sustained outbound streaming traffic.
- Encoder software that can send a live stream to YouTube over RTMPS.
- A visual track: for example, podcast cover art, a still image, or a waveform. YouTube’s reviewed setup guidance does not prescribe a particular visual treatment, but its live ingestion health checks flag missing video.
- Access to YouTube Studio Live Control Room so you can create the event, retrieve its stream credentials, and monitor the incoming stream.
The archive file alone is not a complete live video stream. The encoder must deliver both audio and video to YouTube.
Choose the stream settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not treat one number as suitable for every stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
| Setting | Practical starting point | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS as its secure RTMP option. Google documents an RTMPS endpoint on port 443 and a hostname requirement for SNI. |
| Video codec | H.264 is a straightforward choice; H.265 and AV1 are also listed by YouTube | Use a codec supported by the encoder and verify YouTube accepts the resulting stream. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Check the encoder output and YouTube health diagnostics for audio errors. |
| Bitrate mode | Constant bitrate | YouTube lists constant bitrate encoding in its RTMP/RTMPS guidance. |
| Frame rate | Use a rate appropriate to the source; YouTube lists up to 60 fps | A podcast still does not need motion-heavy settings, but its video output must remain valid. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Illustrative video bitrate | 4 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30 | YouTube lists 4 Mbps as recommended and 3 Mbps as minimum for this specific setting. This is video bitrate, not total VPS bandwidth. |
Allow additional network capacity above the video bitrate for audio and transport overhead, and validate sustained throughput with a test stream. YouTube recommends a speed test and test broadcast. For the RTMPS connection details, use Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation; do not assume a non-TLS RTMP port is interchangeable with the secure endpoint.

Set up the VPS and YouTube event
- Prepare the media. Confirm the archive plays correctly and pair it with a visual track. A static cover image or waveform is an implementation choice, not a YouTube-mandated design. Check that the encoder can play the file and maintain a video output for the whole broadcast.
- Create the live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Select the settings appropriate to your channel and event. YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Retrieve the stream URL and key. Copy the credentials shown for that event into the encoder’s server/URL and stream-key fields. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, place it in public logs, or share screenshots that expose it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
- Configure the encoder. Select RTMPS and the event’s server URL and key. Set a supported video and audio codec, constant bitrate, a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (never more than 4), and a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your source and VPS can sustain.
- Check VPS network access. Confirm with the hosting provider that sustained outbound traffic is permitted at your chosen bitrate and that the selected RTMPS endpoint on port 443 is reachable. Google’s documented RTMPS requirements include hostname use for SNI, so use the endpoint as documented rather than substituting an IP address without verifying that the TLS connection will work.
- Start a test transmission. Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, click Go Live only after the preview is present and the stream is ready. Test audio and video behavior similar to the actual archive, not merely whether the encoder process launches.
- Monitor and end cleanly. Watch the preview and health indicators during the broadcast. When finished, stop the encoder and end the event through the live controls as appropriate.
Check YouTube health, not just the VPS process
A running encoder process proves only that the local software is active; it does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. YouTube’s Live API health reporting includes conditions such as low or high bitrate, unsupported video or audio codecs, missing audio or video, incorrect audio sample rate, and keyframe intervals that are too long. Review Live Control Room’s preview and diagnostics, and consult the LiveStreams API health documentation when interpreting reported issues.
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview or no incoming stream | Wrong event URL or key, encoder not transmitting, or RTMPS connection blocked | Recheck the URL/key pair for the selected event, encoder output status, provider egress rules, and RTMPS port 443 connectivity. |
| Low or fluctuating bitrate | VPS route or upload capacity cannot sustain the configured rate | Reduce bitrate or output resolution/frame rate, check for provider bandwidth limits, and run another sustained test. |
| Missing video | Audio-only output, absent image track, or video encoder failure | Ensure the encoder produces a continuous video track, including when using a still visual. |
| Missing or problematic audio | Audio track absent, unsupported codec, or invalid sample rate | Confirm audio is enabled, use AAC or MP3, and check the encoder’s sample-rate output and YouTube diagnostics. |
| Keyframe warning | Keyframes are too far apart | Set the interval to YouTube’s 2-second recommendation and keep it at or below 4 seconds. |
| Connection fails over time | Host limits, unstable network route, or interrupted encoder process | Ask the provider about sustained outbound streaming and reliability, then run a longer test while monitoring YouTube’s health status. |
Indian VPS bandwidth and cost checks
The National Informatics Centre’s webcast guidance calls for a static public IP, an encoder supporting the required protocol, outbound RTMP port 1935 access, and dedicated bandwidth of 2–4 Mbps per stream for its webcast context. That figure is specific to the NIC webcast service guidance; it is not a universal YouTube VPS specification and does not replace YouTube’s RTMPS guidance for this workflow. Check the actual protocol and endpoint you use, and ask the VPS host about the relevant outbound port and sustained throughput. See NIC Webcast Services.

No particular Indian VPS provider, instance size, CPU allocation, transfer price, or route quality is established here. Before choosing a plan, confirm the data-center region, allowed egress ports, transfer limits and charges, CPU capacity for your chosen encoding method, and reliability commitments. Test the actual VPS-to-YouTube route and encoder workload; an advertised server location alone does not establish sustained streaming performance.
Keep long archives within YouTube’s archive behavior
YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. If automatic archiving matters and the podcast archive runs longer, divide it into separate broadcasts that each remain under that documented limit. Schedule and verify the sessions rather than assuming a single longer stream will produce the expected archive.
