Use FFmpeg to combine a looping still image with a prepared audio playlist, then send the encoded output to the ingest address shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The key caveat: FFmpeg’s concat demuxer expects compatible input streams, so prepare mixed-format episodes before relying on a long broadcast.
What you need
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube also requires streamers to be at least 16; see YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A still image, such as podcast cover art, and the audio files in the intended playback order.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can remain online during the broadcast, plus an upload connection capable of sustaining your chosen output bitrate.
- The ingest URL and stream key provided for your broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password.
This is documentation-based guidance, not a tested command: behavior depends on your FFmpeg build and the actual media files. Check the local options with ffmpeg -h demuxer=image2 and ffmpeg -h demuxer=concat before using the template.
Prepare the playlist before streaming
Check that concat inputs are compatible
The concat demuxer is convenient when episode files have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. It does not guarantee clean playback for a playlist made from arbitrary files with different codecs, stream layouts, or timing. FFmpeg’s formats documentation describes these constraints; inaccurate duration information can also produce timestamp artifacts.
If the episodes differ, normalize them beforehand to a common audio format and consistent stream structure, or choose a playlist method suited to those inputs. Normalizing in advance adds preparation time but makes the live job simpler; converting as part of a streaming workflow may reduce preparation but needs validation with your files and FFmpeg version.

Create a concat playlist file
For compatible files, create a plain-text file named playlist.txt with one entry per episode, in playback order:
file 'episode-01.mp3'
file 'episode-02.mp3'
file 'episode-03.mp3'
Use paths that refer to files you control. The concat demuxer’s safe-path checks are enabled by default. The example command below uses -safe 0 to allow paths the default may reject; only use that relaxation with a playlist you created and trust. Prefer safe relative paths when practical.

Configure YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or configure the live stream.
- Copy the stream’s ingest address and stream key from the connection details shown there. Use the endpoint YouTube provides for that stream rather than guessing an address.
- Choose an ingest protocol supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS encoder ingestion and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts delivery to Google’s servers. Confirm local support and use the RTMPS endpoint when available.
- Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls before broadcasting again.
Channel verification and eligibility are YouTube account requirements, not FFmpeg command-line settings. Review the current YouTube live-streaming setup and eligibility information because platform rules can change.
Combine the still image and playlist with FFmpeg
In this template, replace the filenames and the final destination with the actual image, playlist, and YouTube connection details. Do not include angle brackets literally. The stream key belongs only in your local command or secure environment, never in a public post.

-loop 1 -framerate 1 -i "cover-image.jpg"
-re -f concat -safe 0 -i "playlist.txt"
-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "<YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL>/<stream key>"
-loop 1repeats the still image;-framerate 1is an input option placed before the image’s-i. Confirm that your installed image2 demuxer supports the loop option.-rereads the playlist at approximately its playback rate instead of sending the files as fast as possible.-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0selects video from the first input (the image) and audio from the second input (the playlist). This mapping assumes the playlist input exposes the expected audio stream.libx264and AAC are a compatibility-oriented video and audio choice. YouTube also lists H.265 or AV1 video and MP3 audio in its encoder guidance.-r 30 -g 60sets an example 30 fps output and 60-frame GOP, giving a two-second keyframe interval at that frame rate. YouTube recommends a two-second interval; calculate the GOP for your actual frame rate rather than copying 60 blindly.-b:a 128k -ar 44100are example audio settings, not a universal requirement. Set output parameters to suit your source and check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). This schematic command does not set a fixed video bitrate, so choose one appropriate to the resolution and frame rate, configure it for CBR using FFmpeg’s encoder options, and ensure your upload connection can sustain it. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube’s current recommended bitrate range is 5–14 Mbps; it is guidance, not a guarantee that every connection or stream should use the top of that range. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for current recommendations.
FFmpeg options are order-sensitive, especially input options placed before their corresponding -i. The command is a template, not a validated universal recipe. Confirm your installed build supports the chosen protocol, check that the playlist’s audio stream maps as expected, and test the exact files before scheduling a long live session.

Test the broadcast and monitor it
- Run a short test using representative episodes and the actual cover image. Verify that the image appears, audio starts, transitions between files are clean, and playback order is correct.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room to confirm the incoming stream is recognized and inspect stream health before making the broadcast public or relying on it for a scheduled event.
- Run an upload speed test and leave headroom above the selected video bitrate for network variation and other traffic.
- During the broadcast, watch for dropped frames, unstable ingest, audio gaps, and timestamp or sync warnings. Do not assume that a command that starts successfully will run uninterrupted for the full playlist.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing with representative audio and video and monitoring stream health. A static image lowers visual complexity, but the stream still has to meet the ingest and network requirements for the selected output.

Having a playlist file or permission to use a cover image does not by itself establish that you have the rights to broadcast every episode, music bed, clip, or other included material. Confirm that you hold the necessary rights or permissions for all audio and visual material before streaming. YouTube’s copyright and live-streaming policies may affect a broadcast independently of whether FFmpeg can encode it.

A technically valid stream also does not guarantee monetization or compliance with YouTube’s channel policies. Make sure the content and its presentation meet the rules that apply to your channel; do not treat a still image or a continuous playlist as a way around copyright or platform requirements.
Troubleshooting
- FFmpeg rejects the concat playlist or playback breaks between episodes: inspect whether files have matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Normalize inconsistent episodes or use a playlist approach appropriate to those files, then test again.
- The still image does not repeat or the image option is rejected: check
ffmpeg -h demuxer=image2for support in the installed build. Ensure-loop 1and the image input options appear before the image’s-i. - YouTube does not recognize the stream: recheck the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, confirm the selected protocol is supported by the local FFmpeg build, and verify that the broadcast is configured on the intended channel.
- Video appears but audio is missing: confirm the playlist input contains an audio stream and that
-map 1:a:0matches it. Check file paths, playlist order, and whether the files are readable. - Stream health shows instability or dropped frames: check upload capacity, competing network traffic, and the configured bitrate. Test at a lower suitable output bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the current setting.
- Audio gaps or timing jumps occur: review source durations and timestamps. FFmpeg notes that incorrect durations can cause artifacts with concat; normalize or replace problematic inputs and retest.
