How to Stream a Podcast Playlist to YouTube from a Mac mini

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use OBS Studio on your Mac mini to send a local podcast episode or playlist to YouTube Live. Add a single file with OBS’s Media Source, or use its VLC Video source for an ordered, looping playlist; connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Test the playlist, audio, and stream health before the event.

What you need before you start

  • A Mac mini with OBS Studio installed. The exact encoding performance depends on the Mac mini generation, macOS version, OBS version, and chosen stream profile; no specific combination is established here.
  • Podcast episode files accessible on the Mac. For a predictable playlist, prepare local files rather than relying on podcast-feed URLs as playlist entries.
  • VLC installed if you plan to use OBS’s VLC Video source. OBS documents this source for playlists; it is not available if VLC is missing. (OBS media sources)
  • A YouTube channel eligible to stream live. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. (YouTube live-streaming tips)
  • Permission to broadcast every episode and every included element, such as intro music, outro music, clips, and background music.

Prepare the episode files and playlist

  1. Gather the episodes in the order you want them to play. Play each file locally first to confirm it opens, has sound, and is the correct version.
  2. Check the rights for every episode and any third-party material in it. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a detected match can replace the stream with a placeholder, and continued use can lead to interruption or termination. If you have a licence, the rights owner may still need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. (YouTube copyright guidance for live streams)
  3. Choose the OBS source that fits the job: Media Source for one local file, or VLC Video for a multi-file playlist. OBS documents common audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, and video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. Confirm the files you intend to use are supported by your installed software.

Build the podcast scene in OBS

For one episode: Media Source

  1. In OBS, create or select a scene, then use the Sources panel’s add button and select Media Source.
  2. Choose the local file. Enable looping only if you want that single episode to repeat; otherwise let it play once.
  3. If the stream needs a picture, add suitable artwork or a still image as a separate image source. A playlist-only broadcast does not require a camera or capture card.

For multiple episodes: VLC Video

  1. In the Sources panel, add VLC Video. If that source is unavailable, install VLC and reopen OBS.
  2. Add the episode files to the source’s playlist and arrange them in the intended order.
  3. Use the source’s Loop Playlist setting if the sequence should repeat. OBS documents loop as on by default and shuffle as off by default; leave shuffle off for a fixed episode order.
  4. Decide what should happen when you switch scenes. Check the source’s playback behavior so the playlist continues or stops in the way you intend.
  5. Add artwork or another visual source if you want a picture on screen while the podcast plays.

OBS documents a playlist of local files, but that does not establish that arbitrary podcast-feed links will work as a reliable playlist. For fewer surprises, use files you have prepared and tested locally. (OBS media sources)

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream and confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled start; these are preparation recommendations, not eligibility rules. (YouTube encoder preparation guidance)
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream details if OBS does not offer the right account connection option.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password: it authorizes your encoder to send a feed for YouTube to accept. Do not show it on screen or share it publicly. YouTube recommends RTMPS for streaming to YouTube Live. (YouTube encoder instructions; YouTube live-streaming tips)

Set a stream profile your connection can sustain

For a standard SDR stream, YouTube’s current encoder guidance specifies H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second recommended keyframe interval (not over four seconds). Select the bitrate row matching your resolution and frame rate rather than assuming one bitrate suits every stream. (YouTube recommended encoder settings)

Setting Guidance for the stated profile
Video, 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps H.264 video, as recommended by YouTube’s current encoder table (accessed 2026)
Video, 720p at 30 fps 5 Mbps H.264 video, as recommended by YouTube’s current encoder table (accessed 2026)
Audio 128 Kbps for stereo, as recommended by YouTube’s current encoder guidance (accessed 2026)
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds, per YouTube’s current encoder guidance (accessed 2026)
Rate control and codec CBR and H.264 video for standard SDR, per YouTube’s current encoder guidance

These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a particular Mac mini or network will deliver a stable stream. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate. A lower resolution and matching bitrate may be the more reliable choice if the connection is limited or shared with other traffic. (YouTube encoder settings; YouTube streaming tips)

Test, go live, and monitor playback

  1. Before the event, run a test with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. Confirm that the VLC playlist advances through files in the right order, or that the single Media Source behaves as intended.
  2. Start streaming from OBS, then check the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the audio is present and at a sensible level before announcing the stream.
  3. Keep OBS and Live Control Room visible during the broadcast when practical. YouTube advises creators to monitor audio and video quality continuously. (YouTube streaming tips)
  4. When the event is over, stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. (YouTube encoder instructions)

Troubleshoot common problems

  • VLC Video is missing in OBS: VLC may not be installed. Install VLC, restart OBS, and check the source list again.
  • The playlist does not advance or repeat as expected: Verify that each file is present and playable, check its position in the playlist, and review Loop Playlist and shuffle settings. Test scene-switch behavior before going live.
  • YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Check that the correct stream URL and key for the selected YouTube event are entered in OBS. If needed, copy the current credentials from Live Control Room again; keep the key private.
  • The stream buffers or loses quality: Check the stream’s bitrate against stable upload capacity, leave the recommended 20% headroom, and reduce resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the selected profile. Consider other devices and applications using the same connection.
  • There is no audio: Confirm the source file plays with sound locally, inspect the OBS audio mixer for activity, and verify the YouTube preview before the event begins.
  • YouTube interrupts or replaces the broadcast: Review the episode, music, and clip rights. If licensed material is matched, contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting for your channel before relying on it in a live stream.
